All white pups or pups with more than 80% white are sometimes blind or deaf; I've never bred a dog so I don't know how early you can tell if a dog is blind or deaf, but I'd rather cull a pup with one of those disabilities than have him live a life of constant anxiety? Or something.

Same with merle; I would never own a merle APBT, but breeding two merle dogs together produces what's called a double merle, which severely affects the dog's hearing. [Though you'd have to be an idiot to breed two merle dogs in the first place!]

I agree with those two colors, 100% white or merle. I completely agree, I wouldn't own a merle dog either but I was talking more of people who just cull a dog because they don't like its color like grey, ticked, mostly white (not 100%), etc etc. I wouldn't cull a perfectly healthy well bred brindle dog just because I don't care for brindle, same with grey.

  6. Merle is a major fault. I believe that ticking is as well. So if you were breeding to maintain what is a REAL APBT according to breed standards, then you would cull all merle and ticked dogs.

  7. hi all,
me to thinks thats a hippo not a pitbull :S
my pied bitch has some ticking, more so visible when shes wet :D

Merle is a disqualification but ticking is perfectly acceptable and doesn't mean its mixed.

Its as bad a saying black n tan Sorrells are part Rott lmao.

Not to be a butt, but merle is not a disqualification. But it IS a major fault.

Ticked dog. Ticking is flecks (not spots or patches) of color on a white background. Ticking can occur with or without piebald patches.

    Ticking with piebald patches:

Merle. Merle is patches on a COLORED background (i.e. grey, red, brown, etc. but not white):

As a side note, ticked dogs also have a higher incidence than normal of deafness.

    Hope this helps.

    Blessings ...

EDIT: I forgot to add, as for purity, there ARE some folks out there who believe ticked dogs aren't completely pure. This is b/c there has been a documented breeding of a bird dog x APBT mix being bred back into the APBT gene pool. Whether ticked APBTs got their color from there I do not know. I personally like the color. But there are some who do think the color came from the bird dog lineage.

I am sure glad Carver didn't cull Miss Spike due to her color. It would have been a great loss and a major setback in the development of the APBT.

True, if you have one that had papers before they stopped registering them and they're still valid; guess I got ahead of myself LOL. The only DQ is human aggression and not having reproductive organs where they should be.

I love merle coloring personally & I had one years ago. She was the healthiest dog I have ever owned. It was her temperment that did her in though; scared of EVERYTHING!

I posted a couple of pics of my "ticked" girl, well it's much easier to spot as she is wet here in her bath :p yes I was talking to her as well :D but she did grow much more ticking along her back as she reached 1.5 she will be two in June and they seem to have stop by now.

My Angus has minor ticking.. You cant see any of it in a normal picture like this..

but you can see them on his ears here when he was a puppy, and like what someone also said, when hes wet you can see them clear as day..

and you can see it a little hear, this was taken back when he was just a year old...

I dont understand why anyone would want to cull a dog for being blind or deaf,... these are APBT's they can be blind or deaf and function as good as a dog without the disability. look at blind billy.

as far as merles, they are cross breeds. obviously there was never merle dogs.

there was always ticked dogs in history and still are... heres my boyles/midnight cowboy/RBJ/alligator bitch, if ppl talk shit about my dogs its usually her, because of her color. I just laugh because this is the HARDEST workin bulldog I have ever seen along with her strong smarts and silly humor.:dogtongue:
