What do you breed for?

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by T.Cleveland, Apr 11, 2016.

  1. As a new owner I want to ask seasoned dogmen what do you breed for? I know most would say gameness but in a broader scope what do you ultimately plan to achieve? A certain temperament? Look? Line preservation? Drive?

Also how far out would you cross? Would you scatter breed to achieve a specific goal?

The reason I ask this is because I recently purchased a OFRN pup which I love. I also am helping a very good friend of mine out by purchasing a female pup from a litter that drops in May but she is out of Pinolero. Unlearned and ignorant thinking would say, you have a male and female, breed them! BUT, as someone who desires to be a responsible owner and potential breeder I want to add value to the breed and not be out here irresponsibly doing things without proper knowledge. So I thought I'd ask seasoned dogmen what they think. Have you ever produced trial litters to see how the offspring turn out?

Breeding APBT's. Is a lot of work and is a life style that is not for everybody. Make sure it's something you really want to do These old timers have dedicated there whole lives in making the breed what it is today my advise is leave it for the pros. If you do decide to be a breeder please do it with integerty just my opinion. And do lots of homework maybe look into Richard Stratons books.

Boy stop. Y'all gone breed them pups as soon as you can! You just want an ok or 2. Learn from the pups becoming dogs and find out what YOU want. If you're askin other ppl what they breed for as advice, hold off on breeding all together!! Own more dogs and get some time behind the wheel first before you go breeding trial litters not even knowing what you're looking for!!! You should have seen something by now in the dogs to know what you want in a dog and kinda how to get it. So the the real question is what do YOU breed for?

Stratton books are the starter kit for kids in high school. Go to dog shows and talk to ppl. Get to know somebody and hopefully go from there. Don't go talkin about dumb shit like gameness, mouth and all that! Ask smart questions. How they got started, how long have they had their family or line of dogs, what do they like/dislike physically about the dogs there, what do they look for in a dog. Do homework before you start a test...

  5. One thing that I can assure you of is that I am in no rush to do anything. I'm a young man who has a career and anything I do would just be a hobby out of pure love for the breed and a commitment to it's preservation. If I wanted to "just do it" do you really think I would consult anybody? Let's be real, all I'd have to do is say I've got papers post a few YouTube videos and that'd be a done deal. This is merely conversation to bridge the gap between the old and the young. The oldheads will not be around forever, so who will be left to carry on the breed. Don't run off genuinely interested young men with shitty accusations. I am here to learn, not to seek anyone's approval.

I agree with cnote got to some shows and start talking to the right people. Good luck with your Joirney .. Learn as much as possible from good dogmen.

  8. The bulldog community here in GA is a very tight one. I've literally had individuals tell me they'd never sell me a dog based on skin color. I will look into attending some shows though.

  11. One tried to sell me a dog for $1000 dollars with no paperwork and said that his other dogs are bred "privately." The other claims that any dog that he has placed in the hands of our community has been ruined and he refuses to do it again.

" trial litters to see how the offspring turn out" every litter is just a guess no matter what the breeder try to tell you. IMO "responsible owner and potential breeder" would let the dogs earn there right to be bred. Best advice BB ever got was the man behind the dogs is the big factor. Once you figger that out you got it made.

Blk ppl have good dogs too. Especially in the South! Gotta open up more, then don't look AND sound like fresh fish. If you know what you talkin bout, even a lil bit, even those racist guys have to respect it. Ain't noooobody gone punk me at a dog show with words... Most ppl you just met will tell you they got pups for a stack. Know why?? Cuz you look AND sound like fresh fish! I've done it too!! The only time it worked, I couldn't afford the pup, off Gr Ch Airplane.... That one stung.. Why ask a stranger, or someone you just met, about gettin a pup and you don't know HIM OR HIS DOGS?! Study a line you like and find out who is runnin it. Email any questions you have, but let them know you only have questions. Helps save A LOT of time! Askin about a breeding you don't plan to buy rubs some the wrong way

I would first enjoy them at least enough to know if I wanted anymore of them, then ask the breeders why they bred the 1 you have and the one on the way...are u sure there will be any females or enough..to go around...I think we can all agree its the dog not pedigrees, at times. So if I needed an outcross so be it, depends on what's lacking...& temperament would be on the list with this breed esp.

In time you never know ,you may like 1 better than the other and pull more towards those type. Do your research and have fun at it.
Take your time and the right ones will come alone. I don't claim to be a season dogman just been around a few.

HEALTH-GAME..... without either of those you have nothing! Then try and add everything else, But those two traits are going to make you or break you.

Unless you got the pup from IM forget about it as brood stock, you're just adding piss to lemonade.
Pinelero is good stuff, the man himself could give you good insight into which direction to breed.

I don't care who the OFRN came from it won't be working or brood. No disrespect but I could tell you some stories. Get off the gas. The OFRN is a great testament to the breed, but it is like trying to race a 2016 La Ferrari against a Model A.

Use it as a cross and that's a different story, it can be very successful.

This is My take on the subject:
Lines are secondary at best, standards always has to be primary. You create your own standard of what you want in a dog, then settle for nothing less. When you have standards you can Go out and look at which kines or familys Carry "your standards". Often, depending on your standards, lines are poor guides to get the kind of dogs you want. Look at close relatives, do they fit your standards? Do they produce dogs that fulfill all your standards?

Then when you got standards, you need to be true to your standards. This seems to be the Hard part. Alot of people have an Idea of what they like, but breeds for a LOT of other GOOD traits, but this is abbandoning their standards and then wonder Why they don't get consistently good dogs.

My standards are My own, and they wont matter to anyone else because My standards are made for My point of view. I can put up some adjectives of what i like, but everybody reads in their own way of thinking into these words. So get your own standards because "IF your gonna breed, you gotta know what you Wanna feed"
