Should our breed's name be changed?

I say forget the whole thing and call em powder puffs or something like that. The whole pit bull or even APBT name turns most people off right away. I cant count how many times ive said "american pit bull terrier" and gotten a blank look from almost everybody, all they hear is "pit bull".

How about an "American Terrier" ??

It's that Spud's dog that has the wrong breed name!

Hinks STARTED with the old bull and terrier dogs and "perfected" them into the showy all-white dog by crossing in Dalmations and some think Pointer. This breed was invented about the time dog shows were becoming popular and these "perfected" bull and terriers got the name BULL TERRIER -- unfortunately. They are not a bull terrier. Their breed name should be Hinks Terrier!

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be the English Bull Terrier (the bull and terrier as England developed it; although I can understand the Staffordshire part, as that part of England was so important to it's development); and the bull and terrier as developed in America is the American Bull Terrier. And that name is really not all that much a change for our breed -- it was used a lot in early years...and I have some Bloodlines mags from the 60s that use it a lot.

I think the confusion is with the dog that gets called "Bull Terrier". I think it's very unfortunate Hinks dog got that name.

I agree we should change the "name".. we have to manupilate them, lets forget about the pride and lets do it for the survival of our breed.. we need to play politics, because thats what it is now, it politics..and PETA/hsus are playing it very well.. adapt to changes or disappear. i choose adapting.

    I go for american terrier.

when someone " a person " is in danger he changes how he looks and uses different name/ID... , dogs cant do that and if they had the ability they would have change their name long time so they could survive.. so lets do it for them.. lets help them.

9 out of 10 of the people who i ask about the breed have negative image.. they are brain washed. theyalways say oww arent they dangerous.. nooo they have lock jaws F#$% that im tsickig to my boxers.. apbt they turn on u.. bla bla bla..

some guys who never even seen an apbt already made etheir mind about the breed , dangerous dogs.

    we need to act quick..

forget about the pride, lol are you serious..? forgetting about the pride will not increase survival rate of the breed.. trying to play politics is what5 PETA, HSUS and all these othe bs organizations is doin. someone who chnges appearence or changes their name because of danger...to me is a cowardly move like tuckin there tail , running and hiding. Im sorry but to me that is not the A.B.P.T. We do not need to change name because once your labeled by uncle scam, your labeled..

its not the name of the breed thats hurting it. Its irresponsible owners / wanna be dog fighters / the media.

nobody cares about the name and it would take generations to implement a name change. its about the apperance of the dog and peoples obession with it.

I like the American Game Dog / American Terrier

a change in name will put a different inpack on the breed...like if you went to court and said your name was gangster G or would you say your just Tom....

Like it or not, your name impacts your image & your image impacts how people don't know you receive you. If folks think you mean them harm, they will be more inclined to want to eliminate you, as it is human nature to eliminate what you fear.

As for holding onto your pride even if it costs you benefit, there is a saying for that type behaviour. It is called "cutting off your nose to spite your face." Would we like to call them American Game Dogs, American Sporting Dogs or American Pit Bull Terriers? Sure. But is it beneficial in today's day in age? No.

    JMHO ...
