My vet gave us a free sample of Frontline yesterday. I don't know if it works but we shall see. But I am going to try salt. In my neighborhood there are fleas everywhere.

If you have a limited number of dogs, Revolution and Ivermectin work wonders on fleas, ticks, mites, and worms (not all).

As in Japan, we have alot of spiders...BIG ones too. If you have spiders in your yard, KEEP THEM. No, I'm not joking. Out here, the spiders take care of all the mesquitos, flying insects, fleas, bugs....everything. Buddy of mine, dogman for 40 years, tried ridding his yard of the spiders once, only to insite a huge insect problem. He let the spiders stay - no more fleas, ticks, flys, mesquitos, etc. Not for everyone...just an idea.

Apple Cider Vinegar is awesom at insect repelling and general skin conidtioning. It helps with small rashes and irritations. If you have a puppy with a belly-rash, a spray bottle with a mix of ACV and water will cure it by the next sun up.

During the summer (most of the year, here) I give modified versions of "satin balls" as treats. They have alot of fresh minced garlic and ACV, solely for the purposes of pest control. I guess the buggers figure, "this dog friggin STANKS!" and stay away :)

I use Cydectin cattle wormer...it kills internal and external parasites. i give about 5 cc to a 35 pounder I have given more and doesnt hurt them. I give it to my goats, sheep and chickens. I have used it for 3yrs now without any bad reactions...RGF

i use a mix of a quart of water, with essential oils of lavendar, rosemary, sage, and eucalyptus mixed together and then i spray the dogs.. it keeps the bugs away and they smell good. they also get a clove of garlic in their food 4 nights out of the week..

Won't the pinesol hurt the dogs skin or do you have to dilute it massively?

Frontline works for about 4 days around here. Which is not good condidering it is tick city out here. :p Fleas aren't as bad as in the city for some reason, but the ticks are rampant. Contantly checking the dogs for them. Found one on me from being outside for only a couple hours. For the fleas we use this natural flea remedy, it goes on the ground kinda like sevin dust, but it completly non-harmful for the dogs. Got it as wal-mart. It even has instuctions to use on animals or in the house, and dosages for mixing in the animals food. I can't remeber the name of it though. When I get home I'll check and post it.

Well, I've tried just about all of the suggestions, except the salt, and still they are everywhere. Going to get some guard star and salt and see what happens. I have everything in my yard. Grubs, worms, mosquitos, and ants, just to name a few.

alright, this is going to sound retarded, but hear me out....
i stumbled onto this when i had a dog who had fleas, and
would chew at them, and pull his fur out, in turn, his skin
    dried out really bad...
here's the retarded part, i sprayed him with a skin softener
my lady had, it's called "skin so soft" avon makes it. when
i sprayed him with it, the fleas fell off of him dead. never
    had the problem again.

I've heard good things about this stuff- food grade Diatomaceous Earth. It is mixed into their food. I haven't tried it yet but I have ordered some. Do a search on google for it, I tried to add a link but for some reason I cannot.

I've got no complaints with frontline, apply it correctly, don't let the dog bath for a couple days before and after applying it.

I heard ivomec keeps fleas and heartworms in check but I haven't used it for that. Also garlic is suppose to work real well. Feed it fresh in their food daily. Suppose to be a natural remedy for parasites and a good immune booster. I use bio spot and treat the ground monthly with granules. [IMG]

i have too much greenery for the salt but will try the applecider vinegar thing.. mostly have used fronline but willing to try that other one in the suggestions . . i understand a natural product called bt is available its for all kinds of infestation made from pulverized shells of clams and oysters , high in calcium i understand it is like shards of glass to insects .. can be used to deworm animals and farm peoples i read lol.. with the frontline i hadnt had to find it but with new puppies i think the least harmful the better .. has anyone else heard of it .. there was an article in motherearth news they have some of the best ways to live conservatively and save mother earth from damaging ways.. has worked well for my property for the last 30 plus years organic hope this helps some..think orange oil mild formula is good too

Ivomec does nothing for fleas. Over and Out granules you can get at WalMart for the yard. If you know an exterminator you can get Termidor (active ingredient is fipronyl), 1 ml between the shoulders once a month and I guarantee you won't see ticks or fleas.

i dont know if i would recommend putting a termiticide on a pet.........i know that fipronyl is the active ingredient for frontline .....it is just not a wise thing to endanger a pet especially for someone who is not licensed or experienced with those products. jmo :)
