Aoo I have a one year old male pitbull. He has always been scared but I thought he would work out of it. It has only gotten worse. He is scared of his own shadow and when I walk him he will shit all over the track. I tried getting another dog he loves her as he does all dogs but didn't make him anymore confident. I really need some help on what to do. I am never stern with him but he cowers when you try to pick him up.He refuses the car and sometimes coming in the house. He runs from all people but won't leave my side. He just seems miserable. Need Help.

Considering that the dog's always been that way and is a year old, the situation probably won't improve.

I got him from a bad situation we wouldn't fight and he only had bout 20 percent hair.He is very loving to me and close family but freaks out in public.I have a lot of time and money in him and hate to see him miserable.

What is your reaction to the way the dog behaves?
it maybee just the way he is but are you rewarding him when he acts this way?
may sound silly but ive seen alot of dogs acting certain ways because it has gotten the attention they want, ie your rewarding the dog for being a sook.

if it is the way he is you may want to consider your options, not allways but some dogs with this habit , when they are fully grown may turn into a dog that bites out of fear, pretty rare in this breed.do you live in the circumstances where they dog will not feel threatened all the time, if you can live with it so can the dog but do you want a potential fourteen more years of this dog acting this way?
id wait and put more effort do some research on the breed and dog training in general and keep trying, if it doesnt work then look at what your options are.

Rule number 37: "Never expect a nervous dog you've gotten from a bad situation to around just because you love him and have spent time/money on him."

It is wonderful if it happens, but don't count on it.....in my limited experience.

Not all dogs are meant to go out in public and mingle with the masses.
If that is something that you require of your dogs, perhaps this dog would be happier elsewhere.

Also, as far as the "loves all other dogs" thing is concerned, please refer to Rule number 1: "Never trust a Pit Bull not to fight."

Thanks a lot for the tips its hard to think of getting rid of him I've raised him since he was 4 months and I'm not gonna give up on him yet.I'm very attached to him and if the best we can do is not take him in public then so be it.And I also have a female that won't back down from anything so I know not to trust them he has bit another dog before very hyper boxer cause I was irresponsible and trusted him

im not going to say itl def happen , but he might come around i dont take any of my dogs in public walking anymore i walk mine at night late when i am not going to run into anyone with another dog and if i did i would simply cross the road. if he is happy with you and the family then i wouldnt be to stressed id just make sure he was out of touch in times when he feels threatned, ie outside on a bed or in a room with a bed he can feel safe.

    id keep trying.

Honestly, this will sound weird, but this really works... Put the dog threw a keep. Not a full blown keep, but a steady tough workout schedule and try driving with the dog 2-3 times a week. I had this problem with my Topaz dog, and she started coming out of it, now shes almost 4 and acts almost like a regular dog. She dont run from you, she'll just walk slowly to you. This bitch would run away from you, i mean run away and never come back. Now she's great with everyone. Lol it cant hurt to try and your dog will be in great shape. JMO

NEVER NEVER NEVER coddle or comfort him if he's geeking out. Make sure you are ignoring his scared behaviour, while praising him when he shows interested curiosity. You need to act very confident yourself especially when he geeks. He's only one, so there is still hope he can improve. My first girl was scared of the world when I got her. By the time she was well into her adulthood, you'd never even know she had any issues in that regard. She REALLY benefitted by obedience training, as she was really smart and just excelled at it so it gave her confidence. As well, try to find what motivates him. Is he food driven? Toy driven? If so, you can use that to redirect and distract him. Use what brings him out of his shell as a reward. You need to really make an effort to set him up to win. You want to expose him to stuff, but not push him past his threshold. Just keep a close eye on his behaviour. My girl now is very nervy and just started to show some signs of fear aggression, so it can go that way as well. Just google ''shy dogs'' ''skittish dogs'' etc.... and you'll get tons of ideas.

Good advice above. He's still a pup, don't give up on him. Especially if your just using him for pet purposes. Treat him like a sporting dog & shape his mentality.

Ok I been wanting to get him into some kind of sporting. He is very agile and very strong he is short but very stocky but not bully style stocky just good game stocky he may be 15 to 18 inches tall but 50 pounds. Any ideas and if so how I have no clue when it comes to that. I run him and my female erryday then walk 2 miles.

Listen. The fact that you put yourself and your problem out there means that you are the type who recognizes a problem and goes about exploring solutions in a proactive way. I congratulate you for that. Considering how many have similar problems and keep it secret for various reasons, you are way ahead in the game.
On the other hand, the fact that you have to ask these opinions suggest to me that perhaps you don't have the experience with this level of shyness necessary to go about serious behavior modification methods. You're clearly not sure or comfortable with the situation, and that's just fine.
I would suggest that you take up some of these suggestions, especially those which focus on obedience training and physical exercise. Both these things will give you a better understanding of your dog's triggers and boundaries,...and of your own as well. It will help give you and your dog confidence and control. Furthermore it might help mold more appropriate responses to those things which frighten him.
In any case, good luck. Keep your eyes open and be honest if you see marked deterioration in behaviorm, or if you feel his problem moving beyond your ability to handle it. Your and your family's safety should be the most important considerations,...every time.

My pup.came from a.similar situation and was very shy...I made the mistake of babyin him...I ended up puttting him out in the yard on a chain more and less rules (jumping, barking, etc) and let him be more of a dog....working great so far...
oh and he was like that for bout a year then started changing..
