I have been looking for a lean staffordshire bull terrier. It seems all the breeders websites that I have viewed show fat and pudgy looking sbt. I saw a few sbt's on a website of lean looking sbt. The website was described as having working sbt's. I am in California and would like to know of any breeders that breed working "lean" sbt's, if there are any left in the states.

Most of the lean staffords descend from working type strains, even tough most of it is watered down these days. As far as I know there where just a handfull of that type of Staffords ever shipped over in modern days. Only one breeder that I am aware of that did breed further, but he started out with some shady stuff in my book- and crossed it with US stafford blood. So I can not grade his stuff since it would all be down to his selection.

I have had some contacts over the years with americans claiming to be eager to get working strain Staffords. But when it all boils down to it they always proved too lazy to make the effort. Even invited one or two over to see the dogs for themselves so they could get a personal impression of the dogs. But they where too convinient to even get their ass on a plane! So I dident even bother to answer the last contact attempts, since it just seemed to be waste of time.

She was a pure show breeder, that happened to run accross a famous working dog and made a cross with it. A friend of mine ran into her and asked why, she said she dident really know- just tought it was a good idea at the time. Atleast proves she have some sence of what a Stafford should look like, I hope the rest of her stuff is well balanced.

She is a puppy mill that breeds "show dogs" that are a pile 'o' shite.

Most people get lean and slim mixed up, lean is how low the body fat % is, slim is different. A bodybuilder in competition is lean, a supermodel is not lean. A dog can be big and be lean or it can be slim and be fat (skinny fat).

So I imagine that what you want is a dog that comes from functionally structured, naturally athletic dogs that don`t have too much unneeded muscle, the lean bit is down to you with food and exercise.

not all of the dogs she bred were shite ...i knew one that alot of its american cousins wish they hadn't of met ...i know it was maybe a one off but this dog was very highly thought of in my area .

    yes.

I assume conditioning the dog will only do so much dependent on the body structure of the sbt, or can you make all the dogs look like working dogs with enough conditioning?

one thing is to make them slim to look like working dogs, another is looking and functioning as working dogs. give me any stafford, specially the shit destined for show only and I will make it look like mr olimpia in 3 weeks or so.

Thanks for your answers. I'm set to pick up my puppy in July from a breeder. Didn't find the look i was hoping for but hopefully I can condition him to look like I want.

No disrepect intentend but please do not think like that, if you did not come across the stuff you like wait some more until you do find what you want.
Not saying you wil not love the dog but you can't create a working dog look out of show stock dog, jmo
Yes you can make it look slim and muscled but at ther end of the day you wil stil end up with a show stock dog, only in a bit better condition then the others.
To be honest if you only come across pudgy looking onces you haven't been searching good enough and i think you limit your self to the states.
Some members here have some nice looking sbt's why not ask them where they get them.
I know of 1 who imports his dogs, if you think it is a money thing, don't for the price what you wil pay for show stock sbt you can import your own dog.

You have a very good point. The dog i'm buying is going to cost me $1250. It seems all the reputable breeders price their dogs around that price range, sometimes up to $1500. Can you tell me who the breeder who imports sbt is?
