Painter and Scott types are bred more for work (hog hunting, etc.) Jonson are more bully and usually less athletic. Scott types are usually smaller. Some look a lot like APBT. Scott type are used more for work and sport than both other types. Supposed to be some really tough painter lines from what I hear. I've never owned an AB. Just what I've read. Good book called "The Working American Bulldog" by Dave Putnam. I think it's out of print so may be hard to find

Painter bulldogs was the only strain bred for dog combat..They were bred for fighting.I never owned or saw one but I do know they were originally bred for combat.

We have one from the scott strain. 55lbs full grown. Body of an APBT.. shorter muzzle, undershot pretty good. Great drive and excellent home guardian.

painter and margharita crossed AB with ABPT for contests staged in chicago...... Sgt Rock i think made CH.... with some 1x 2x ...... but it petered out as it was the APBT blood keeping them scrathing back. Has gone the way of the dodo. AB breeders breeding dogs for hogs keep their own blood which are heavy built rough curs that arent bred to be game. They are an american working dog similar as the Dogo in latin america. A gamebred animal will not work in a pack........ If it did it aint GAME.

Does being game have to do with DA? If a dog is not DA but will withstand fatal and crippling wounds from a hog and not quit. Is that not game?

No disrepect to AB but they wouldnt be much good on hogs if they kept trying to kill each other when slipped of a lead. Take a couple of yellow dogs and RB/jocko bitches on a hunt and see if they will catch the hog. Damn they wont get off the truck in one piece.

Game bred APBT,s is the way to go for hog catching..I want a game, rough ass APBT on a hog cause I dont want one that will quit.I saw too many dogs quit on a hog.You know whats between you and a hog when one decides to quit? AIR thats it..I have saw plenty of hot headed APBT,s catch hogs you do have to train them young and stick with it..I wouldnt use anything else.I have only saw a few American Bulldogs that was worth a shit at it.Years ago bfore the Russian Boars was imported to the states hogs were not as aggressive.Ones without the Russian influence wont even run unless they have been chased bfore..The ones with the heavy russian influence will run as soon as they see you and when the bay dogs get him in a corner ,,,yeah u better hope you game dog on a leash ready to release.

In that case....... would it be easier to rear a gamebred bitch to not kill her furry friends and keep her excitment for the pulled pork hiding in the bush...... than a dog?

its like this we have always used gamebred APBT,s fior hog catching in the south ,not sure how its done every where else..If you train them young and work with them they know they suppose to get the hog not the dog.Now can you take one that has only hunted dogs and make a sucessful catch dog with it? That I dont know. But I do know APBT,s love catch work and they are natural at it and are very very very good at it.I dont release my catch dog until I can see the hog.and know I am at a short distance where I can move in swiftly to kill the hog and get the catch dog back on the leash..Now I dont want him to have time to sit around and think well what do I catch next? But hell yeah man I want a APBT nothin else.

I talked to Floyd a while back about catch dogs and he said his son use to hog hunt alot,he said his son had a 43 lb eli bred dog from thier stock ofcourse that was one hell of a catch dog..Gary Hammonds is another..man I wonder where he got the name catch dog enterprises? The Alligator bred dogs are world known for being great catch dogs ...So if you dont believe me then call up these old timers and ask them if thier dogs will catch hogs?Let me know how many says thier no good at it..I bet you wont get a one that will say thier not good catch dogs.

I have to disagree just because some APBT,s will tolerate other dogs or other animals does not mean he or she isnt game.

Theres been plenty of pitdogs that were used as catch dogs im pretty sure krazyside used sum of there dogs to catch you said redboy/jocko dogs hell wac was on here not to long ago showin his dogs catchin hogs. You dont use a catch dog to hunt in packs anyways

Erie you are right about that.I suppose if someone did both types of hunting it would be a bit confusing for the dog to catch with the scent hounds around.
