Is there a way to guesstimate weight of a full grown SBT

Hello all,

I was wondering if there is some type of way to guesstimate a dogs adult size.

My Swiper is 3 days shy of being 5 months old. I just weighed him at a hair under 30 pounds. I feed him Origen puppy kibble he gets less than 2 cups a day kibble + 1 heaping spoon of evo salmon canned mixed up with hot water. Once at 6am and again at 6pm. He is a little chubby at the moment.

I was chatting with a girl at the pet food store and she told me that when he is full grown he may be larger than what I am expecting. She estimated twice his current weight for his full grown size.

Swipers parents are both AKC registered SBT and the dam weighs 34 pounds, the sire 38 pounds. I am a little worried he is going to be larger than what we would like.

 

Nice pup Swiper. As a rough guide the weight of your pup at 4 months should be doubled to get an IDEA of it,s adult weight.Sometimes pups are larger than their parents. Shouldn't be a problem unless you plan on showing him!

I would guess that your guy is going to be in the 45lb range.

My pup is 3 weeks old and weighs just over 8kg, any idea how much he will weight when fully grown thanks?

Is your pup at the right weight for his size and build?

If he is, I am going to guess he will be in the 55-60lb range.

 

He is a little bit chubby but not much, is a nice shape dog, looks like a stocky dog for his age thanks

 

how can you even give a rough estimate on what a dog will be full grown from its weight at 13wks? i can understand a rough estimate from dogs current size and shape at 5 or 6 months but at 13wks its a complete guess. bone structure, general porportion, genetics all come into it and thats way too early to tell. At that age be best to just keep them fed a good diet, appropriate amount of play and bonding and let the dog mature.

Been away for a bit, its nice to be back. Swiper is now 7 month old, he weighs approx 36-38 pounds.
Hes a bit chubby around the waist. I feed him 1/2 cup of grain free salmon based kibble with a tblsp of wet canned at 7am and the same amount at 7pm but with omega 3 and a probiotic gelcap. He is not getting a ton of exercise at the moment. should I reduce his food?

I'd never reduce food for a growing puppy.

 

His sire is a grand champ in ukc/akc and in SA, he weighs 36-38 pounds, his mom is 34 pounds, I got a staffy because I wanted a small dog. I guess he will be what he will be its already set I suppose. but hes chubby on top of it and not as agile as he should be.

 

i would go with handwalking, a few light games of fetch etc and slightly reduce his food. are you feeding treats between meals ?

yes, I do train him with treats, this is part of the reason I feed him only 1/2 cup twice daily. He is over food motivated. OMG when I let him back inside after poops he runs straight for under the stable to make sure he doesnt miss any tidbits before they get swept up. He does not get any human food at all other than the crumbs he may sniff out.
I guess Ive got to get my ass out into the rain and walk my dog instead of tug roping inside.

And to answer your question, he'll probably be close to the size of the sire. But it really does vary a lot by how much you feed and exercise. As I'm learning, 3 lbs one way or the other can dramatically change the look of these dogs.

 

Good looking pup... forget about his weight and just concentrate on keeping him fit and healthy!

 

I was told by an old time staff breeder from England that you take the sire's weight (38) and the dam's weight (34) and average it (36) add 5 lbs if its a complete outcross (41) for a female and 8lbs (44) if its a male. The dogs full grown weight should be within 5 lbs of this estimate so it is not an exact science... That being said there is always going to be extremes where you will get a huge dog or a tiny little one out of the blue due to genetic variations, good luck.
