Do pits have to be kept on chains. It cant be good for health/suppleness. If room is a problem ok but would a long narrow run well fenced not be better for a young dogs developement. Or runs together with corrugated sheets between, just like gamecocks.
I know i must be wrong but why?

its better to chain an apbt with a good setup.

put a apbt in a normal kennel, and you will see what happens, these dogs are escape artists!

go out of the house with only dogs in a seperate kennel every morning, one day you will found one or more of your dogs heavy injured or death. and thats sure!

Yes,it's best to chain your dog.You don't have to worry about the dog getting through the fence that way.If you can't or won't contain your dog properly then this isn't the breed for you. The reason is if your APBT gets loose then you most likely will loose a dog or have some other major problem.

I suppose its better to chain than have the consequences if things go wrong. We used to have a Russell terrier that couldnt dig under the buried mesh fence but he found that he could walk up and over the top of the 7ft high fence.

I never understood the 8 hour law, they would have to stay at your house for 8 straight hours, I would be upset if I had to post man power and tax dollars to prove somebody left there dog on a chain (secure) to start a bullshit case!

and the main reason they are kept on chains is simple, they were bred for the main purpose of the pit. Just like game cocks are kept secure. If this fact bothers a pitbull owner then I highly suggest you get a another breed. This is one breed that will have you on the front page if you dont protect the breed from itself.

A ten foot chain privides more than double the living space of a 10x10 kennel. I have always felt its less mentally healthy to keep a dog in a kennel. They will pace back and fourth like a zoo animal. Kennels have their purpose but i wouldnt trust them with a hard keeper. If you look at what it would cost just to put up one 10x10 compared to a chain set up theres no comparison. I can do 9 or 10 set ups for the cost of one premium kennel yet the dog will be much more secure on a proper chain set up. JM2C..

The A.P.B.T is not a breed for everybody. Many people have been misinformed by humaniac spin doctors who paint all owners who have dogs on a chain setup as cruel and neglectful owners. While the later is true in some cases it is usually not the case for knowledgeable and experienced owners of A.P.B.T A PROPER chain set up is one of if not the most humane and healthy ways to keep a working A.P.B.T The reasons have been stated above and many other post have covered it ad nauseum.
If a person is looking for a docile , non working , house pet to dress up like a little human there are many designer dogs out today that I would suggest. Not to be facetious just saying this breed is not for everyone especially if you are talking about Game dogs.

Trust me they will leave a note on ur door when ur at work stating how they have been by more then once and seen dogs out on chains only way for them to have seen this is to look over a 8foot fence but I invited them to come by on my day off and showed them my kennels that are off the ground with a dog house plus they each have their on chain spot with dog house every one on 10-15feett of chain! Have not heard from them since and its not just my bulldogs out there but all so a few mixed breeds! Chain is for when in at work makes me feel safer the kennel is for sleep and on the weekends they might be on the chain all weekend as I like to party on my days off! And like u said they wanna waste man hours and my tax paying money to peek over my fence hay be my guest!

No irritation my friend. But I am curious, when you owned game dogs what type of set up did you use? Just wondering because of you originally posted " Do pits have to be kept on chains. It cant be good for health/suppleness."

its not jus that the chain is more secure. a dog has more living space on a 10 foot chain than in a kennel. A LOT more living space. Also i wouldnt want to be behind a fence all day.

Chain hands down. Kennels have their uses but for everyday use I am very much an advocate of a proper chain set up.

more like 3+ the area... area of a 10x10 square=100sq ft
    area of a 10ft chain is pi(3.14)x radius(10ft) squared ...3.14 x 100...314sq ft

A very long narrow run approx 90ft x10 and 7ft high. The Fence was heavy gauge galv weld mesh. More wire was attached to the bottom of this and buried in a trench. The trench had concrete blocks on top,and finally covered with soil. The fence top had 2ft of rabbit wire angled in from brackets on the posts. The posts had angle iron on both exposed edges. The single gate was concrete slabbed on the ground to prevent digging under. I found a dog in a long narrow run tends to go up and down a lot.
Ive also got now 25x25ft run with an open front made of timber and wire. The rest is really a corrugated steel shed with a roof. The concrete floor inside is sloping to drains.I dont have a game type dog in that but I think it could be modified to do so by replacing the timber and wire for all steel bars.
I should say that the dog i had in that long run only weighed around 25lb and I dont think ever tried that hard to get out.He was however given plenty of exercise every day.Hope that answers your question.

    I wasnt really considering cost.

  20. Pitbulls are escape artist, period.... if you don't chain you will have a problem sooner or later.if you have the room put him on a long sturdy chain secured at a point and not on a pole unless the chain is able to go around the pole wuthout becoming tangled.
