APBT blood in "old time" Staffordshire bull terriers

Hi, I might be posting in the wrong part of this site, but I'm new here and thought you guys are the best people to ask. I'm not new to owning dogs having owned bull terriers for over a decade and being around working terriers and lurchers, but I have recently acquired a blue staffy from my friend who could no longer keep him amongst his working dogs. Being that he is around 19 inches tall, lean and ripped he would be considered an old type or working type in the UK. The government sees working staffs and Irish staffs as a code name for American Pit Bull Terriers. How much American blood if any do you think is in my dog.

Without a pedigree no one can really say for sure mate. If they want to seize your dog they can based simply by the way it looks. I have seen lab cross boxers and scott type American bulldogs seized so whether he actually has any APBT blood in him is irrelevant to them, it is based solely on the way he looks. What is your mate doing with lurchers by the way? Coursing?

Yeah my friends only ever go lamping. Sometimes they head north for larger game, but I shouldn't be mentioning it across the internet. Again due to the law.

The SBT is the original APBT... Dogs came over from Ireland and the UK with the Colby family. Many more where imported during that same time frame.. I own both breeds..

JBL, I've always been intrigued by the BT, but I've never known one. I know they're no longer a working breed, but I'm wondering, now you've had your Stafford a while, how they compare -- how are they different, how are they similar?

    Thanks.

Are we talking comparing EBT's to SBT's?

If so I can say bull terriers lack the agility, stamina and obedience that you'd get with a Stafford. They actually were never cut out for the bloodsports around in the era they were created in and that's why they made it into the show ring. For working bull terriers look at how they are bred in India or Pakistan.

However that being said they are great family pets and guard dogs. They have got an excellent nose and eyes for vermin and a strong stubborn streak. If they get something in there head they tend to not be able to let go or back down from it.

They are incredibly strong physically and mentality and have shot rushes of energy they often need to burn up, but burn out quickly. We call it a bully run. Mine could literally use the walls in my lounge like a skate ramp to climb up either side.

Some people breed fit for purpose game EBTs.

JBL, Thanks for the good insight on Bull Terriers. I admire bull breeds in all shapes and forms (except for the less-functional brachycephalic versionS).

XLR8, I wish these breeders breeding fit for purpose game (or simply "working strain") EBTS, SBTs, Boxers, etc. were more easily found. You could fill a book in these forums with all the posts over the years about "where to find" any of them. And, I (academically) wonder, once found, how many of them have truly developed a multi-generational strain that reliably reproduces themselves. I suspect the answer to that question has more to do with what MOST of the fanciers of those breeds are buying, as opposed to anything else.

American Pit bull terriers are older than Staffordshire Bull terriers ,,,, pit bull terrier from Britain and Ireland ware the main dogs that went on to develop into the APBT in the USA,,,, SBT developed in the UK from same dogs at a later stage ...
