I know its along read, but you will see the pit owners mention they were the last in london and list the last places and names of the owners, by 1832 society was rapidly transforming and their was public and political pressure to ban all animal baiting which they did in 1835.They show that their was a difference in public and private contests obviously due to public and politcal pressure to ban them.

Many of the members of commons and Lords were patrons of baiting sports as is mentioned in the post and presented expensive gifts to owners of famous dogs.

For the sweaty backbone in baiting sports you will have to read the poor English Irish and Scottish who traveled in and around the British Isles and to and from its colonies.

Reading through it, I wonder whatever became of the bulldog Billy, described in these transcripts as stuffed and sitting in a case?

Didnt read all the thread (lifes too short)...but pretty sure the above bit by Phil Drabble is from his book 'Pedigree unknown'...Drabble owned a couple of Staffords as house pets...dog and bitch...never worked them in the traditional way...one day they get into a jealous tear-up (as they do) and this seems to put him right off...he then says something like he wouldnt have another because the show people ruined them and it wouldnt be the same...but when they did show their working side he didnt like that either...much like the show people

The Bull and terrier 'Billy'...the record rat catcher...ended up stuffed on the bar of the boxer (and Champion of England) Tom Cribbs Union Arms pub in Panton Street Piccadilly(now called the Tom Cribb) as did the Ape Jacko ma wotsisname...Cridd matched his dogs in the westminister pit Duck lane...was Ruben Martin named above?...as his pit was well at the same time

I take it the stuffed bulldog Billy has been lost to time? What a great find that'd be, considering all we have otherwise of that era's "bulldog" are period drawings.

If Billy did ever turn up, I wonder if we'd get a few surprises with regards to what that pre-Victorian bulldog actually looked like.

Your post mentions Billy as a bull-and-terrier cross -- either way, he'd be neat to see.

    Billy the bulldog(bull and terrier)

"Thursday night, Oct. 24, at a quarter before eight o'clock, the lovers of rat-killing enjoyed a feast of delight in a prodigious raticide at the Cockpit, Westminster. The place was crowded. The famous dog Billy, of rat-killing notoriety, 26 lb. weight, was wagered, for twenty sovereigns, to kill one hundred rats in twelve minutes. The rats were turned out loose at once in a 12-feet square, and the floor whitened, so that the rats might be visible to all. The set-to began, and Billy exerted himself to the utmost. At four minutes and three quarters, as the hero's head was covered with gore, he was removed from the pit, and his chaps being washed, he lapped some water to cool his throat. Again he entered the arena, and in vain did the unfortunate victims labour to obtain security by climbing against the sides of the pit, or by crouching beneath the hero. By twos and threes they were caught, and soon their mangled corpses proved the valour of the victor. Some of the flying enemy, more valiant than the rest, endeavoured by seizing this Quinhus Flestrum of heroic dogs by the ears, to procure a respite, or to sell their life as dearly as possible; but his grand paw soon swept off the buzzers, and consigned them to their fate. At seven minutes and a quarter, or according to another watch, for there were two umpires and two watches, at seven minutes and seventeen seconds, the victor relinquished the glorious pursuit, for all his foes lay slaughtered on the ensanguined plain. Billy was then caressed and fondled by many; the dog is estimated by amateurs as a most dextrous animal; he is, unfortunately, what the French Monsieurs call borg-ne, that is, blind of an eye.-This precious organ was lost to him some time since by the intrepidity of an inimical rat, which as he had not seized it in a proper place, turned round on its murderer, and reprived him by one bite of the privilege of seeing with two eyes in future. The dog BILLY, of rat-killing notoriety, on the evening of the 13th instant, again exhibited his surprising dexterity; he was wagered to kill one hundred rats within twelve minutes; but six minutes and twenty five seconds only elapsed, when every rat lay stretched on the gory plain, without the least symptom of life appearing.' Billy was decorated with a silver collar, and a number of ribband bows, and was led off amidst the applauses of the persons assembled."

Billy was also said to be tried at bear in a team.

Prodigious raticide! Good stuff, lol. The respect from the tale's teller is palpable.

Tigerlines, thank you very much for posting such interesring historical information. Perhaps some people will now realise the Terrier influence in the formation of Gamedogs.

Always gives me a good laugh when people get all upset when faced with the truth about their idols...what i posted above are FACTS taken from Drabbles own words out of the above mentioned book!...Drabble may well have dug with Gripton...but as far as Staffordshire bull terriers go (which is what we are discussing) he owned two as house pets...Grip and Rebel...he declined to properly test either...instead used them for ratting...both dogs died from diseases caught off rats...maybe some people should actually read the books they quote...instead of just cut and paste what they think fits in with their own version of history...and as usual when things dont go all their way resort to the usual playground insults(yawn)

oh dear i see tigerlines got himself banned...wot a shame such a loss

To play devil's advocate, on the other hand... As I've used the Search function over the last few months researching various things, I've come to realize... I've never seen a site so easily threatened. There about 8 times the number of banned members here versus any other forum I've ever participated in. Lol. It really stands out. On the other hand, I grant you, folks can tend to get ramped up pretty easily!

hence why staffords get no were as the men who work breed and maintain the dogs don't get along and people go on peds instead of the actual individual dog and its work.

Probably most of the 'banned' members are characters like your pal 'tigerlines' who come on the forum again and again to rant their rubbish under differnt usernames...people with a fascination with game dogs but with obvious contempt for those that keep them...if your idea of 'research' is to press the search button on a internet forum and learn parrot fashion what other people have cut and pasted...then you will only gain piss poor knowledge that way...i may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but i can spot shit before i tread in it...most of us sussed your pal was full of it when he posted a story about dick turpins horse black bess on the A.I thread...but some just like to belive they are talking to a history expert/game dog professor
