i am planning to condition my bitch (non-pit, but already very muscular naturally), but i honestly don't know where to start. we''ve had a few ideas.
    -weighted backpack
    -pulling weights uphill
    -fetch up and downhill
-carpet mill (know any cheap ones???)
    -bikejoring
    - hopefully swimming

we've put her on a healthy diet
    -olive oil
    -some veggies
    -high quality dog food
    -very fresh purified water

she's about five now so i'd like to see her at her absolute peak while i can.
she weighs in at 41-42 pounds, is 18 inches at the withers and has good drive and stamina . I ask this here since we don't want to spend a very large amount of cash, if you know what i mean? if anyone has good tips or pictures of non-pitbull conditioned dogs, please share as well.

You are on the right path. The uphill runs will be awesome. If the dog will fetch numerous times superb conditioning is pretty much a given. Nothing like a dog running on the ground. The weighted backpack works but I would do that in limited stretches with not very much weight. It is sort of hard to get it to ride evenly, the weight always seems to wobble from side to side, which I fear will hurt the dog.

I am a huge carpet mill fan. I have been building them for about 20 years. They can be built for about $125-$150 and work extremely well. Go to youtube, check out US1 Free Spinning Carpet mill. Build these mills for $125 or so.

    Best of luck. S

Run the dog. However u can. I can't say u will see a cut dog but u will see what a fit conditioned dog is. My bay dogs can run track on hogs upward of 4hours. Giving it all they can thru thick woods. They aren't cut but they are well conditioned.

    thank you both!

thank you both a lot! how long do you suggest i run her? and do weighted collars work???
also, shot gun, what do you mean by cut? if you mean game, i'd say she is, not like she'd keep going if she were devastatingly injured, but she's beaten far larger dogs in serious fight resulting from scuffles at dog parks and if a dog runs up on us. no normal dog is bulldog game though.

Cut= ripped.... Muscular and Game is the willingness to keep going when devastingly injured.... So by your own admission, your dog isn't game, just had to kick a few butts at the dog park!

Ripped is right or tons of muscle definition. As far as running as far and long as the dog will go. If u can bike with the dog I would start at about 5mph for an hour. From there keep increasing either speed or distance. U are building endurance in the dog. It's not as much about speed as time. At 5mph most dogs have a small trot. If u need faster to get the dog into a trot

i don't think muscular means that. but i think determined is a better word, but i doubt she'd keep going like a bulldog would. it'd have to be a cur bulldog for sure. like i said very few dogs are bulldog game

    @shotgun thanks a lot.

Muscular was in regard to "cut" or "ripped".... Gameness is the willingness to keep going in the face of death

oh okay then i see you. in that case i'd say your correct. though i don't think her being ripped is that necessary. she's already quite muscular.

    German Shepherd - working line.

    By 2.75 years:
~1500 miles of trail and street covered
    Tens of miles of swimming
Thousands of ball, frisbee and water retrieves
    Flirt/spring pole addict

No hint of slowing down. Fueled by meat, poultry, egg and fish based diet, raw and cooked.

Ironically, many of this sweet girl's ancestors were legendary not just for soundness and versatility, but the willingness to bite a human with confidence - without command, without hesitation when challenged or intruded upon.

As much as I enjoy the working line GSD, the game/performance APBT will always be my fav.

so update: my mother agreed to help condition her. we'll be changing her diet a bit. we originally had planned her to have boiled chicken, carrots, high quality kibble, green beans, olive oil, and a boiled egg for her daily meal. and a 45 minute- hour long walk, run her up some steps and some fetch. i don't know about the carpet mill, but i think i may be able to convince my mother to buy one. if we do i suppose i'd run her every morning for 10 minutes and every afternoon for 15.

I used to own a really nice red river curly slatmill till I had to make a fast downsizing move.Used it for 14LBs jackrussells,,,40LBs staffybulls and bigger pits from 30 to 60LBs,,,loved it.I just jacked up the incline to triple there workout. You gotta keep your eye on them when running the mill. Some run like a freight train running from a fire some a nice steady even pace both worked for me....I have this really cool fun running frenchybulldogpatterdale cross that I trained to flirtpole and fetch.I start out with the pole to warm her up then fetch with both heavy hard hocky balls and tennis balls then cool down with some more pole work again.Plus she wrestle's EVERY night working out every muscle in her body with my 13year old 50LB zebo-eli male.Thats my pits workout now he's to old to run.She a year old now and with the warmer weather I've already tripled her conditioning. Not everybody's cup of tea but she has lots of drive and she zooms in on the rabbits,,, she bolted a few since she was real small,,,, the difference between her and a full PATT is she come back LOL.....!

Older thread I contributed to, adding some more..

Looked at a couple videos of Mr. Garner’s fine dogs competing against each other in tug of war, couple minute rounds. Bobby Peru v. Santos in one of the bouts, with Santos being about 8lbs lighter and eventually getting Peru to drop his hold.

I tried out a few tug matches with my two - GSD v APBT; there is a 20lb weight disparity. The GSD clearly has the leverage, mass and height advantage. Harder prey shake.

Yet APBT usually wins these matches after a couple minutes - on tenacity alone. She digs in, holds and shakes/jerks continuously. The GS will eventually let go, even though she is more competitive and can toss the smaller dog around somewhat easily.

I go 2-3 minute tug rounds with each of the dogs, among other activities. So I have pretty good feel for each of their capabilities.

Breed genetics. Selective breeding for certain traits. GS would rather track, chase and bite. APBT is more about the bite itself, hold and grapple etc.

Just my observations with 2 individual dogs.
