    But the volume of the plays weren't executed. He got rid of personnel that could have run his scheme more effective, and brought in less equipped ones

    The west coast is a passing game based on run principle. One receiver goes thru an area, second follows thru to catch the ball 'in space'. i.e. Jerry Rice invented the stat Yards after Catch. Many variations, principles the same. The Saints used shallow and deep in routes to the safety and linebacker and then screened beneath them. They did not have to sell anything with the lineman at the line of scrimmage.


    The spread was a pro-set once upon a time. Multiple wide receivers vs, two tight ends/3yds and a cloud of dust approach. The 'spread' term is referred to the same sets but with a dual threat QB.


    Most in the NFL use the a variation of the spread in their formations, employ west coast schemes but stop short of using a truly dual threat QB. They just do not last. Defenses catch up really quick, in the film room and on the field.


    Cam Newton's time will come. Someone has to be in his ear saying 'be more prototypical', "it is a longer stay". RGIII was exposed in his second year.Russell Wilson figured things out. Even some of the greater QB's as well. Roger Staubach was a running QB out of the academy. Steve Young as well. And my favorite QB of all time who should have been turned loose by Buddy Ryan was Randall Cunningham. The 'let's kick a field goal and go play defense' stymied his career.


    They have always spread, but the term spread nowadays means a dual threat running QB.

    I believe this to be true as well. It is all about speed and getting people the ball in space as many times in the game as possible. Murray is a great back with a really good offensive line. The Eagles got rid of a back that could come out of the back field to catch passes with that '3rd down back appeal' that could do things that didn't require a great offensive line. Then he got a QB about 1 surgery away from having artificial knees. Zero mobility. Then says we are going to run a hundred plays that require the QB to move around, roll out, sprint out and he can't do those things at all.


    I gave him "Rain Man" props in the beginning, but later I decided he did not have sense enough to come in out of the rain.

And look, this isn't to compare Kelly to any of those guys or say he's assured of winning one Super Bowl as an NFL head coach, let alone several, and becoming an all-time great pro coach. The point is to underscore how HARD it is to win at the outset of an NFL head coaching career. The fact Kelly did that while basically lighting his roster on fire is, in a backwards way, kind of more impressive. Again, Kelly the GM was bad. Kelly the head coach accomplished quite a bit.Giants. Kelly the head coach accomplished quite a bit.championship. Dick Vermeil went 54-47 (3-4 in the postseason) from 1976-82. Buddy Ryan had a .544 winning percentage in 79 games from '86-90. Rich Kotite went 36-28 in the early '90s. And, of course, Andy Reid has by far the most wins in franchise history (130-93) and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance.

    Kelly's .553 winning percentage trails only Neale, Kotite and Reid in franchise history, and again, see point No. 1. Kelly is just starting his career and did not help himself by trying to serve two different roles. What are the odds the Eagles actually get a better coach than Kelly? Not very good

    Dallas and Philadelphia both deserve what they got....damn if it ant broke stop trying to fix it. Dallas dummies got rid of a good damn running back, cause he thought he had a line. What he needs is a quarterback and running back...dummy kept the thief.

    Chip got rid of all his good players for nothing....anyway this is the pros its hard to bullshit a grown man with more money than you, what can you tell him..Chip needs to go back to college and coach. Hell Nick or the old ball coach can tell you that much, no matter the offense.....Chip is GARBAGE and in glad he was handled. ....The city of brotherly love....I DON'T THINK SO...jm2c

    Very few coaches had the success that Kelly did at Oregon on their resume, and his offense was universally acclaimed for changing College football. They literally had to put new rules in (to the NFL too) to protect defenses from getting burned from lining up too slowly. Quite a few "copy cat" coaches followed the super high pace of running plays to great success (BYU, TCU, Texas A&M OK State to name a few. Kelly's off the field contribution to players health (and stamina) may not have been new BUT he was one of the few head coach that made it a critical element he expected his players to follow. In college you can force the players to follow the rules for their own good. Not so much in the Pros who balked at his conditioning regimen on all fronts.
