Self Propelled Treadmill vs 400$ carpet mill?

I am wanting to get a treadmill for my dog. I have seen the slat and carpet mills for sale online which are between 375-1000$+. I am not a handy man and am not well versed in putting shit together haha. Would this work? If I were to attach a chain to keep him there and put up walls on the side so he doesn't fall off? If this would work that'd be great since it is only 100$ and self propelled. If not, are there any markets or forums in which people sell used ones? Or would this work?

I have seen people use them but from what i have heard, the dogs have a hard time hitting full stride on those kinds of mills and might form bad habits on them as well. I don't know how accurate those statements are, just shit i have heard before.

Wardog had good results with one. I prefer a slat. Staffy is right, they aren't usually long enough for the dog to hit full stride.

Thanks. Well maybe I will save up for one, or at least try the manual treadmill to see how it goes.

Those manual treadmills made for people suck thats why its so cheap as even most humans dont want to use them. LOL....They are hard to turn especially when starting up and or going at a slower pace as it uses momentum /speed to get it turning.

I would just save up some money and get something that is worth it like a Grand Carpet mill or something similar in that price range.

Are there any good plans / videos out there for building your own? I've been thinking about putting one together.

What's everyone's opinion on what age to start them using a carpet mill? I've read that if you start too young, its not good for their joints.

I have 1 a little longer that I use to let puppies start on. Never had a problem.

Carpet mills are very hard to turn and they are hard on the dog but they do build a strong dog. Slat mills are easy to turn easy on the dog. I would put a dog on a carpet mill if he was well built already and close to 1.5 years of age but that's just me.

The only treadmill that's worth it's bang for the buck is a carpet mill hands down!

A slat mill with a break is the best setup in my books. Its nice to be able to a adjust resistance to bad there loud as all hell.

I disagree. Each mill does different things. Carpet helps build muscle and a strong backend. The slat mill builds endurance. Also good to have when the weather gets bad you don't have to miss a day. JM2C

What you are saying is very true I agree with you 100%. That is why I like a slat mill with a brake it is the best of both worlds in my opinion. Can be used with brake pressure for muscle building and break off for endurance.

A carpet mill will burn fat depending on the dog up to 4 x as fast, build muscle way faster and after a basic H.I.T. workout two hours while resting will burn more fat than an atual dog running on a slat mill. The problem with people not knowing how to build endurance on a carpet mill is the only reason slat mills still exist!

I never let my dogs get to fat maybe 5-8 pounds over. Well you do it your way and I'll keep doing what has worked for many years. Also what works for 1 person might not work for another. My slat mill has a break on it.

A carpet mill burns fat at a higher rate.
A carpet mill can be used aerobically.
A carpet mill builds muscle faster and stronger dogs
A carpet mill will burn fat while a dog is resting.
A carpet mill is an anaerobic tool and the matching of dogs is an anaerobic activity.
Why do people have slat mills?

I'm willing to bet many more folks bring one in that used a slat mill more so than carpets. I know like 3 people who use carpet Mills and around a hundred or so that use slat mills.

Both are a tool that can bring one in good shape. Which one a person uses is basically just personal preference.

Not only preference but scientifically the best conditioning tool! The only people who have a different opinion are those that don't know how to use a carpet mill aerobically!
