New Staffordshire bull terrier dog - not the same.

    Hi all

I joined to increase my knowledge because I am realising that I am ignorant about the sbt breed.
I'll give you some background to my decision to buy an sbt. My dad had an sbt and the dog was so driven, it would hang off ropes until it was dragged off and chase and attempt to kill just about any other animal. He caught rabbits, rats and mice.
So I purchased an another thinking it would have the same characteristics but it is lazy and can just about be bothered to walk outside for 5 minutes. I even bought rabbit fur and made a flirt pole hoping to trigger his innate hunting/drive but nothing.
Is this normal or was the previous highly driven dog abnormal?
Thanks for taking the time to read.

Probably your dad had an STB bred down from a strain of working dogs and you've not.
Nowadays the STB is bred more for the showring then something else so the required character for what was once a fighting dog got lost over the years.
Your dad's dog was an old time stafford you probably have a staffordshire bull terrier of nowadays show lines which is a big difference.

Yes, the beauty pageants have ruined many a working breed.

  4. High I'm from Western Europe and I can honestly say that u could count on one hand the working strains of Stafford that are in this part of the world.twenty years ago you could get one(just about) but it was hard then to get a real one.I no some idiot who has a good old type one that's near perfect in structure but he would never work it only breed it!!now with this sort of attitude it won't be long before the old stains of Stafford become completely exstinkt.now this idiots attitude is to breed this dog to any powerful looking bitch with out Evan considering temperament let alone working ability.THIS TYPE OF PERSON HAS RUINED MENY BREEDS OF DOG!!shame on them!..

Quote'' he caught rabbits ,rats and mice''. And this in someway constitutes an old type strain lifestyle? And you ask on why the breed is dead ! This is why,and he's seen as a good one.... Breeds a thing of the past, face it..

Thank you for all your replies.
Perhaps I'll think about a different breed in the future.
Breeds are a thing of the past? All dogs were bred for a purpose and unfortunately a select group of middle/upper class men decide that a dog should look a certain way encourages health problems and poor breed standards.
Canines are innate hunters; and there's nothing more satisfying for them and the owner than watching them indulge in a task they love. Even if it means helping them out with a lamp.

Haven't seen anything but sighthounds catch on the lamp with any sort off regularity....

Same thing has happened already to English bulldogs and English bull terriers. English staffs are just few years behind them.

I Had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier up until recently. used him in the hog catching competition back in 04 and 05 and 06 until they made it illegal to do so.

How did it compare to other catch dog types?

A friend in town took on a red entire male a couple of years ago, his previous owner couldn't cope with his "I'm a dog, it's up to you to reign me in" attitude. My friend thought he was up to the task!

A few months later he was headed for death row. I had taken a liking to him........yep now he's on my yard, and I have to say, he fit right in.

Chain spaces are at a premium as we all know, but he was such a great dog I was in danger of accidentally gaining a house pet for the wife & kids. He would have been no more or less work than a Bulldog.

The day I found a solo dog pig/hog stalker, who had suffered the recent loss if his pal, was a good one for both of us.

Shout out to Gage wherever you are!

I bought a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1982 after reading a book by John F Gordon.. I was completely clueless on the breed and still am today really, I called my dog Boots, we attended show training classes and competed in local Kennel Club events, but for me the highlight was the dogs straining on leads trying to get to each other (or maybe pretending to.) Owners beamed with pride as they restrained their dogs and commented on their obvious gameness.. Two fat Staffs snarling on leads, that's what they taught me was gameness and I believed every word, until an accidental encounter one day between Boots and a 14 month old brindle pup that later became known as Champion Scotsmans Max.. What a blunder! What an education!

  14. Lol.I bet max kicked arse.I had a similar thing happen to me many years ago.I had a Stafford with 1/4th Reid blood in it,that I thought was the bees nees ,but u get older and wiser.wen it met some thing it could not live with its tail would go down then it would start singing.and I mean singing!witch was funny because wen things were going its own way it looked rather good.just a cur but its how I started to learn more I suppose.by the way how long did the staff last with max?I'm guessing no longer then five...

If I remember right, it was even for around 20 seconds, then downhill from there :) Boots lasted 3 minutes, probably because Max was young, he still had 2 ears at that time.

  17. 20 seconds lol.that's good for a staff I suppose. Jokin' a side there not even in the same ball park.....by the way was max as good as they say?or was his story's just hypt up?his story's say he went in to some stiff competition an went through them all!is this true?p.m. if u wish...

Max was as good a dog as anyone could hope to own in their lifetime, a 44-46lb dog showed at 50-55lb.. I know people who can't even agree 1/4 pound, that's their business, but it shows the disadvantages Max overcame during the 80's.

Theres still some old type staffs about but they are few and far between . granted they are not in the same league as a good apbt but some can still work for 15 to 30 mins .... i know this as ive had a few but they had a small touch of yank in them , but then again all modern so called working staffs do even though they don’t like to admit it
