any ideas/experience as to what supplements may (safely) give an extra kick to an already fit dog prior to athletic event…

  2. No. But but plan on using these.this my supplement and miniral list.my dogs are healthy and fit.so I'm not using them just yet, till harder work starts.I don't no if they will be good or shite.they are all natural.I'm using all natural because I'm feeding a raw diet.here go's.:10gram Alfeta powder,10gram kelp powder,10gram(roughly a big spoonful)extra virgin olive oil,10gram cod liver oil,20gram prebiotic yogurt,5gram crushed garlic,5gram of pure natural honey(small spoonful),20gram cottage cheese, crushed vitaminB6complex (tablet)crushed multi vitamin tablet, crushed vitamin a and c tablet.all this should add up to about a 100gram (roughly)and will be added to the feed.nearly all these thing are used in the Barf Diet(Dr Billinghurst)book.this is not a April fools lol....what do you reckon?as I haven't a clue me self lol.Happy Easter. ,...........

  3. Just like to add.don't no if that list will be good or useless. But you can most certainly use all the ingredients SAFELY........

@Soze - the raw honey is interesting. I also believe in the value of live, minimally processed foods. I was thinking along the lines of maybe green tea, black coffee etc, or another safe stimulant administered in small amounts, to water or a small treat. Maybe an existing pre-workout product designed for dogs, which is not food..requiring multiple hours of digestion.

  5. Never thought of that.....Got ya,GK1.like a natural "soup".what about mineral water with a touch of honey, black coffee and green tea?it should be easy absorbed.it will give the dog a boost.and it can't harm the dog(i don't think).can't see it being fattening either.Bob Stevens recommends normal black coffee in one of his articals(forget which one).....I'm the same as well GK1,I believe in a natural diet.can't get me head round kibble feeding.was gonna try a greyhound food, but decided to use a full raw feeding program instead.these the first i condition,so don't wanna stack the odds against me....especially because of rubbish food.I mean that's the last thing I need,to start putting work on the dog and I'm thinking, huumm.this dogs diet needs rethinking.best to have all the right tools for the job.........

  6. By the way, just been thinking about the black coffee.very strong stimulant......any one use this?can it make a dog to thirsty?I no when I drink it,it makes me thirsty.but I'm not a dog lol.....perhaps about ten ml.added to water should be safe?????....any one??????............

With proper diet, exercise and rest, you shouldn't need anything. Just my opinion.

  8. I think that to pitbulldogs.I was only gonna add the "natural "supplements when the dog is getting a lot of work.as there's a lot of goodness in raw food...the list of supplemets I put up really can't hurt a dog.but I don't think there's need until the dog is getting strenuous exercise...then I thought they will only help???............haven't a clue me,lol....can you share any experiences in this matter pitbulldogs?plz? Thanks........

coffee/caffeine beverages are diruetics and not body fluid replacements, obviously. i drink plain black coffee daily, to include before morning exercise, have done so for many years, at times preceding hours of continuous endurance training, even in the heat. i never went down from a heat injury. it can be used safely in humans in my personal experience, was curious about the dogs.

i agree with diet, exercise and rest is first and foremost …i need to work on my dogs’ timing and tapering, incorporating rest.. reason i started this thread..my shepherds were noticeably flat the other day during a protection session, even compared to flabby out of shape dogs nowhere near the level of condition my dogs are in. lol my trainer said something to me about going without sex for a period time to build the anticipation… i simply may have over worked them on the flirt, sleeve the week before…made me think i was going backwards in progress.

imo performance pit bull folks pretty much corner the market in conditioning techniques.

RAW Honey is one thing i always add. Some times i'll give a little honey pre-workout but i always give it post for several reasons.

GK1, rest can be just as important as the diet. If they are running on flats, let em rest a day or two if needed. The dog will tell you everything you need to know.

Kelp is a good one to add. Ascophlum nodosum kelp is great for preventing plaque on teeth. Laminaria kelp is excellent for regulating thyroid and adds iodine , I prefer salmon oil to cod liver oil

Salmon oil has more good stuff from the whole fish whereas cod liver oil is from the liver only. I read stuff on it a long time ago. Can’t recall , a quick google should help.

One thing to remember with fish oils is that daylight affects its longevity. I always transfer mine into brown bottles. And store it in a dark cupboard
