Antiboitic question for mastitis Need help

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by elviejon01, May 10, 2018.

  1. Hello all,

I have a female that has mastitis. I took her to the vet and was prescribed Simplecef. The discharge from her teets has been reduced but she is still bleeding. Rather than taking her to the vet and getting jammed for a couple hundred I decided to do some research. A friend who is extremely knowledgeable recommended I put her on Clavamox. I went online to Thomas Labs and Revival and both sites have regular amoxicillin (fish mox) without prescription but the amoxicillin requires a vet prescription. Clavamox is essentially amoxicillin but contains the Clavulanic acid which from I gather makes it more effective.

So my question is, would I better offer off going back to the vet or should I just get the regular amoxicillin?

    Thank you!

  3. For a start how do you know it's mastitis?.is your vet the best?.I know it sounds stupid.but some vets just don't know what they are on about.some vets,(most vets)are just after your money.....now I'm no expert,(ha!far from it)but is mastitis an infection?.I thought it was inherited?.I could well be wrong......now I have a gyp with mastitis, and here daughter has it to.I have never seen blood from any of there teets.just some discharge, which turns into a milk type substance.both gyps, when this happens, start getting all the kids toys, and start lying there with them as if the toys are pups!.both gyps are very maternal.the mother has only been bred the once.and never had these symptoms till she had pups.her daughter has never been bred.but still gets these symptoms???.baffling!.:-?..now I don't know for sure either,if what these gyps have got is mastitis?.but I'm pretty sure it is.now the thing is.if mastitis is not an infection.why would you use amoxicillin?.amoxicillin is an antibiotic!...if mastitis is an infection,(and it could well be.and if you know any more on this subject,I would like to know).then perhaps amoxicillin should help??............I hope my small bit of info helps.as I said. I'm no expert.(far from it!)but I would like a discussion on this subject.I hope other people will join in.because I to elviejon01 think it is baffling:-?.good luck.hope people tune in!..........................

My bitch dropped two pups 9weeks ago. Two weeks later the back tits were extremely hard and when I pressed them a discharge of blood and eventually a thick yellow smelly substance came out. For two days I pressed out these tits and eventually had milk coming out. Never re occur and pups are healthy as can be. I dont know if that was mastitis. Just sharing.

    Treatment for Mastitis:
"Broad-spectrum, bactericidal antibiotics should be chosen based on sensitivity tests and with the understanding they will be passed in the milk to the young. Antibiotics such as tetracycline, chloramphenicol, or aminoglycosides should be avoided during lactation unless the neonates are weaned. Cephalexin (5–15 mg/kg, PO, tid) and amoxicillin/clavulanate (14 mg/kg, PO, bid-tid) are recommended as initial therapeutic agents pending culture results. Hot-packing the affected gland encourages drainage and seems to relieve discomfort. Fluid therapy is indicated in animals with septic mastitis that are dehydrated or in shock. An abscessed mammary gland should be lanced, drained, flushed, and treated as an open wound."

Squeezing the affected teats to remove the infection is recommended, hot compress and epsom warm water is best imo.

@ Soze what you're describing is a false pregnancy not mastitis infection.

  10. Thanks YellowJohnJocko!.much appreciated!...I thought they were the same thing lol....what a fucking idiot I am!.....more research into these two subjects for me!.because I quite clearly researched them wrong!.................YellowJohnJocko do you know why one of the gyps only started getting these false pregnancy after she had pups, but her daughter has never had pups but still gets them??.....and is a false pregnancy inherited?by the way another daughter has never had one?...I am baffled:-?............

Soze it's hormonal, I can't figure out my hormone issues let alone a dog! Haha

Seriously through I''d venture to say it's inherited. I've had some do it young and some after 4 or 5 years of age. I figure it's from lack of breeding my dogs in particular as I don't do many breedings.

Anyhow don't be hard on yourself, we all continue to learn and become better as we go! :D

  13. Thank you sir......and I have always thought it was hormonal.when I see this in my gyp,I give here long walks.you might think why?.my explanation is that being bord, can make a dogs hormones even crazier then they already are(lol I thinks these dogs have got the craziest hormones anyways.).the more long walks I give her when she's in this condition.the better she gets.her tits go smaller, and she stops walking round the house wineing all day and night.oh yeah, and she stops gathering all the kids dolls up.lol............I think dogs and us humans go crazy when were bord!.......I thought it was inherited to.but.lol I got it confused with mastitis!.lol.....I think your right to sir about it being lack of breeding.(I never breed)perhaps they need breeding every heat or every other heat?....fuck that!.the can carry on the way they are lol.............
