What supplements do you guys give your males to boost their sperm, and what do you give your females to get them ready or make them more receptive for the sperm?

Just a good lifestyle here. Good diet, regular exercise, regular parasite control etc. There are products out there that they say help. I can't attest to any though. Tom garner makes one he sells and I'm sure others know of or have used other products they deem work. Good luck. I feel a healthy lifestyle and diet just like a person will keep a dog in good reproductive health. Jm2c

It is one of those things that would be really hard to prove either way. If you use the product and get 10 pups who is to say if you hadn't used it you would not have gotten ten anyway? If that makes sense.

I'm with AGK, good diet, exercise and parasite control.

In Jack's book he also talks about anti-biotics going into cycles and for the males as well. That makes as much sense to me as anything because the start of infections, are seldom noticed are normally very minor, but they are infections the same.

Same as 'inducing' heat cycles. I had an irregular bitch once and a guy told me to buy Bee Pollen and it would do the trick. I gave it to the female and she bled within the week. It worked, but in the last 15 years it has not worked since. But for 6 months to a year, Bee Pollen was the gospel.

I'm with AGK, I would say healthy dogs is the best route. I think the supplements are more apt to give us the warm fuzzies than the dogs.

A once yearly "clean-out" with Doxycycline is my regime along with AGK's advice. Had 3 that produced up til age 13.

Check their teeth as they age also, dental infections are common in old bulldogs. Fresh water always!

I think this is one of the most overlooked things when talking about health in general.

Many systemic infections can trace back to or show a direct link to poor dental hygiene.

Think about it, an infection in the mouth will spread to other areas rather quickly due to the animal swallowing the bacteria constantly allowing it a chance to colonize other areas of the animal.

    Good point Yellow!

Yes, oral health often indicative of other systems’ health. (Same applies to people. ) Aside from health, genetics I suppose will dictate the rest in terms of fertility, offspring etc..

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribulus_terrestris

Re the OP, seems the magic ingredient in the product is Bulgarian tribulus terrestris, which I don’t believe is scientifically proven fwiw. Otherwise, not much more than a high protein, grain free kibble. To each his own.

I have nice pair I’m thinking about breeding eventually. I will probably increase the real meat and add raw goats milk to the feed when that time comes. Then to the pups. If a dog is fed corn based trash feed most of the time, for example, then fed “sperm-up” for a month or two, I suspect there would be a noticeable burst in vigor and drive which could possibly impact a breeding to some degree...

Agree here. I think it is also so why many bitches come in heat during hunting season. They are fed crap for food and when upgraded to keep feed the cycle starts.

I would imagine if fed crap and put on a high quality sperm up supplement then there may be some advantages.

I have used Tribulus before on the males and did not see any miracles. The dog that always thru two, three or four pups, in turn thru two, three, four pups.

Like a lot of things they work best for the dogs if it leaves us with the warm fuzzies. LOL

I got an older male last year with the intention of breeding him. He had never been bred before I got him. I have him on quality feed (Victor) and have been giving him supplements (tribulus, flax seed, zinc, vit c,salmon oil, etc) and I have bred him 6 times and no pups at all from any of the breedings. I have yet to get a microscope and check his sperm but that is my next move. Sometimes it's a little more involved than just good feed and healthy lifestyle. But a great diet and healthy living is surely going to give the dog the best possibility to produce.

On another note, I have a friend who feeds a lesser "quality" feed than I do and he is always having pups. Seems to never miss a breeding. Not sure what to make of that lol.

Treez I'd run him on a 10 day cycle of Doxy. Have you cleaned his pipes manually?
I would do that and collect the ejaculate in a clear vessel, either a large tube or even a baggy and just look it over.

Is it clear? It is creamy? Does it contain blood or other foreign body fluids?

What you want is a whitish creamy sample and you do not need much. I inseminated a hard to breed male @ 8 years old who would not breed, with 1/2 a ml of semen and got pups 2 different times with that small amount doing AI's before he learned breeding was ok with him.

Also is his prostate enlarged? If so very low dose saw palmetto has worked for me.

Additionally what I found with the tribilius is a little goes a long way. I only give it a few times a week. Also a good joint supplement will not hurt. Studies have shown this helps with sperm production in aging studs as it reduces inflammation.

    Good luck to you!

This is a dog man phenomena.

My buddy can leave the females on a chain and they will raise 8 or so in a barrel. Never mash a one.

If I owned Frisco and Jeep I'd be lucky to get ten pups between them. LOL

Thanks a lot, YJJ! Somebody sent me sulfatrimethoprim to clean him out and I ran that on him. I have not tried Doxy. I've also ran Amoxi on him before some breedings also just to try to clean him out some.

My friend who I referenced in the post a few up has much more experience with collecting and A.I.s and stuff and while he was here once he tried getting a sample from him and for some reason he wasn't able to get him to ejaculate. But when breeding him before I have seen cloudy semen drip from her vag so I know he is ejaculating for sure. I have tried myself to get a collection but he was more interested in tearing up the baggie than what I was trying to accomplish. He's also very hard to breed, he'd rather fight her then breed so I"m not surprised he's difficult to get a sample on when by myself.

I'm not sure if his prostate is enlarged or not. Is that something I would see or feel? If it's visible then it's not enlarged. But I will give him a good feel tomorrow and see what he feels like there.

I will get him a joint supplement next time I'm at the store. I had him on Nupro for a while also but ran out and haven't ordered more yet. I appreciate the response and the advice. Very much so.

Great thread. Not trying to get off topic, I have a question. #1 Isn't the health of the Bitch really determines the quanity of pups if sperm is there ? #2 is a healthy 8 year old bitch that has only had 2 litters over the last 5 years considered to old to breed in you guys oppion???

Could it be the heath of the bitch that through the 9 pups because sperm was there? Just curious. I have come to believe that this is true. Jmo..
