Vindicator - is the story really true?

I wasn’t around in the mid seventies and knew nothing of vindicator until about 12 years ago. My previous career required me to travel throughout areas of what I call the mid-south. Basically a long oval from northern Texas up to southern Missouri, across southern IL, IN, OH, then through western parts of WV, VA, NC, and back across the northern parts of GA, AL, MS with the states of KY and TN being my base camp so to speak. To make a long story short I became good friends with a guy from southern MO who had strong family ties in Arkansas and Virginia.

When my great grandfather died 3 months shy of his 100th birthday in 2008 I got go through his journals. Turned out that my good friends grandfather and great uncle were from an area of southern IN called the Beech Hills. Even today, many people in these hills live the way people did 200 yrs ago. No electric, power, or indoor plumbing.

One of the stories I was able to chase down through my great granddads journals and speaking with my friends who now reside in northern Arkansas was that vindicator actually ended up in the western mountains of Virginia, and lived to be around 12 years old and sired a bunch of dogs.

Is there anyone that has heard anything like this?

I got rushed earlier because a customer showed up early. Should have said that my great grandpa grew up just a couple miles from the beech hills. His family was very well off financially and owned a lot of good farm ground that butted up to the beech hills. He grew up raising fighting cocks and the sport still goes on today in those hills. Dog fights were also popular in that area but I don’t believe it still goes on.
So it turned out that my friends great uncle and my great grandfather were close friends probably from the early 1930’s until sometime in the 60’s when the family moved to MO. They remained friends and bulldogs were traded, bought, and sold between the families located in MO, IN and VA.
From the journal entries I know the last names of these dog men were Coy, McCoy, Mccormicks, Wilson, DeLisle, Peters, Halter, Berry, and Robinson. If anyone knows or is related to anyone with these names that were bulldog owners I’d love to hear from you. This history has consumed me over the past few years but I’ve hit a dead end. All the men who would have been around in those days have passed on, along with my close friend and his father and uncles. Since I don’t have any connections to the folks in VA I’m just throwing this out there hoping someone will read it and remember a story that might line up.
God Bless, and have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Im really not surprised by this at all I mean some people will say to this day that Zebo did not kill Art and Zebo did not produce well even when there is an insurmountable amount of evidence and countless dog men disputing these claims otherwise.

Maybe they wanted to cover something or jealousy was involved like it was in zebos case I dont know, but I thought it was pretty much on record that the brother to the great grand champion zebo, vindicator, died due to heartworms at a young age just like zebos sister rosie, under lonzo pratts sh-tty trashy care.

    thats interesting though.

What do you know about Lonzo and how he kept his dogs? You're a Zebo groupie that's criticizing the very man who bred the dog of your dreams.. What have you ever done gives you the right to disrespect him? You're only a fan boy and every time you post you reek of it.. Lonzo Pratt was a true dogman and respected by his peers, do you really believe anyone cares what you think? Learn some fucking respect!

From what I remember reading, Mr Hughes told his wife to take a hammer out with her to feed Zebo. You know why that is right??? I think EVERYONE, but YOU, understood Zebo was a dangerous dog and a liability to keep....

One thing that kinda stumps me about the whole story is that (and I could be mistaken) was that vindicator won his second fight when he was about 2 years and two months of age. I don’t remember exactly how long it went but if memory serves me it was a long match. I asked my vet if he thought it was likely that a dog suffering from heart worm would be able to be conditioned for a fight let alone win in a long contest only to die a few months later from heart worm. He just looked at me like I had three eyes and replied “not likely”. He went on to say that dogs with heart worm will cough and become winded very easily. Does anyone know the exact timeline or have experience with a dog that has actually contracted heart worm and the physical toll it takes on a dog before it’s fatal?
