A lot of good points made.
My take is pay the price or move on.
And like AGK said these dogs should be worth at least as much as any other purebred animal and especially those silly cross bred mutts going for top dollar.
So say you pay 1k for a pup and it dont work out you feel short changed but it was a gamble from the start no matter how good the foundation.
On the flip side the breeder takes a gamble (especially if they are active) when they sell you a pup.
Cause if it goes on the accomplish something and earn back and even multiply the purchase price the breeder gambled wrong.
And I bet the buyer ain't sending none of the proceeds back to the breeder so.

look on Craigslist and see how much a back yard bred mastiffs of different varieties are and compare that to what a professionally bred bulldog costs. The bulldog seems like a steal to me for what most charge to the public let alone friend prices.

  3. the source of information
there is no reliable source due to the nature of the game
there very few who can be trusted to give an unbiased opinion
therefore a dogman in the game true and one that has build a line cant sell dog poop where another whoś last win was in the nineties and lost 60% is famous

    hype is a bitch

I agree with this post but since we are debating.....offering up the flip side......LOL

What I have found is the guy that pays $1K or more is quicker to breed that dog and quicker to give that dog a pass to get to the brood pen.

And that is not any of my business either, but it does serve up a sort of disconnect for me.

That may be the underlying issue I have with the high costs of buying puppies (plus I'm cheap, mentioned many times before, LOL)

Someone mentioned earlier about working dogs costing less as they were more of a tool and some do not make it. I had a Fila shipped from Alaska that ended up being $1500 total. I had one imported from Brazil and it ended up being about $2000. (Got caught in Miami and the temp jumped 15 degrees, too hot to ship and had to pay for boarding)

These were pets/personal/home protection type dogs. Back then I thought it was good money spent.

The bulldogs on the other had to attain a higher bar and when they did not make the cut it was money that did not pan out. Knowing that going in and just could never force myself to spend a million dollars on a puppy.

I agree with that, Slim. But in general that same person would have done the same with the $500 dog. Because that's in their head from the beginning usually. JMO anyways.

I was never looking for the 'cheap' pup. (Well, I got one, but he was not really cheap at all :D) That way I was ALWAYS able to get the first pick of the litter.
I think 1k is fair for a well bred dog.
Last time I bought pups I just said 'just pick the litter for me and pick the pups as well. I do not care how you bred them or what color they have. Just pick what you believe will be alright.
It's ok even if you send me green dogs. And let me know about the price'.
With shipping and everything I paid 5k in Euro. Would love to get the same deal one more time. Females please ;):D

Part of the problem is also we put all the scrutiny on the breeder. If breeders scrutinize the purchaser just as much shit would be better balanced.
If any and everybody didn't sell dogs to any and everybody the perception of their value would probably be higher

Another thing to consider... what is the quality of care the dogs are getting? "Most" people give what I consider low quality care, there are some who give high quality care. Feed, housing, meds, ect ect ect... Should dog seller "A" get as much as seller "B" when he gives shitty care compared to "B"?

I know people who sell a bunch of dogs and their yard looks like shit. But then there are some that sell very few but they put the money back into their yard. There are many variables that come into play. Quality of care is #1 for me.

I guess it can be all relative. A lot to one may be not so much to the next.

I think my 'a lot' is probably less than the average buyer.

The thing I make it a point to not complain or dwell on is knowing that my approach has cost me some good dogs.

Good topic. I doubt there is a right or wrong answer or approach to the subject. It is a 'to each his own'.

If we all did it the same way the Saturday night gatherings would all end in a draw and that would be boring as shit.

I definitely have a limit on what I will spend on a pup... and it's probably lower than a lot of people, I'm with you on that Slim. I just understand what it costs to raise dogs and sometimes what all is involved in getting breedings made so I don't knock a man for his price. I either pay it or I don't. Always a good topic, no matter how many times it's discussed lol.

And as I type it out, my approach seems weird.

I should be willing to pay more for puppies for the simple reason I truly dislike the breeding and the raising of puppies. It is my least favorite thing to do in the dogs. I can haul water and rake shit til the cows come home, but just can't make myself like the breeding/puppy process.

When you truly dislike something and the service is offered, most are willing to pay for said service. And on top of that the better the service, the more one should be willing to pay.

In the end I may be even cheaper than I thought. LOL

Sorry, my bad. This was for 2 pups. 1000 usd each. 3k for shipping and dinner. ;)
If I want something then I just pay the asked price. Well, I would not even take most gr ch's for free. B-):D
Would I ship two 500 usd pups for 3k ? lol Probably not.
And I got the same offer before for a 10 months old male and a female pup, JS bought them dogs later (for more $ ?).
Btw. does anyone know about this bitch ? http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/modules.php?name=Public&file=printPedigree&dog_id=671597
Would like to get info via pm. She was the only pup from the 3. breeding.
The same breeding also produced 2 hidden males, with some semen on ice maybe somewhere.
Next thread could be about the stud-fee. What are some willing to pay for the right stud ? What would you pay for a breeding bitch, I mean a REAL BREEDING BITCH ?
Let's say both mentioned males showed well and everything. And one of them showed very well in all aspects. No signs of inbreeding, no faults at all.
    - Same goes for all dogs of that breeding. All game litters and all of the females have produced either well or very well. -
And a male of the first breeding showed that he is one of the best, if not the best, you have ever seen.
But using the dog would still be a gamble, as he was not bred yet.
Question is if this is a good gamble or a bad gamble :D
So, 5k can still be a lot. But percentage wise I would still feel pretty save about this future investment. lol

My thing isn’t JUST the price. Some charge 1k plus based on what they have done with the dogs. If they are breeding the stock they use and have been successful with it, I can see 1k and up. It’s when ppl start talkin about 1k for a “well bred” pup down from the same. When you are breeding a working breed and they haven’t worked for 3-4 generations, you’re not preserving anything imo. Breeding for nice PEDs alone will only get more nice PEDs. I want nice dogs.

I don’t feel just because you have a purebred anything it should be worth more than a “mutt.” A Bandog program is technically mutts. When they are being bred right and for work, they are worth it tho. I would pay 1k for one of them from working lines. There are plenty of folks breeding pits, you know the ones, out there givin em a bad rap. Folks breeding pits like roaches.

After all that I WOULD pay up to 1k for a pup if the stars aligned. Right folks, right breeding, and all

I understand it’s hot out here and getting hotter. Keeping things honest doesn’t mean taking over the world tho. I wish I could say more, but I think y’all get me. I stay quiet but honest.

Lol I been lookin into sarms and the phone auto’d PEDs instead of peds.

I would pay more for a stud fee than I would pups. Nothing ridiculous tho. With a stud fee you’re getting a chance on a whole litter yourself instead of hoping one or 2 pups make it.

  19. There is also another way
    don't sell
I sold around 3 to 5 when I had dogs and thath in thirty years
but than again I didnt breed much maybe once every 2 to 3 years
I hated selling dogs, I always felt that my line were like babies , they needed attention , not every yard is suitable for babies who want bedding changed every other week, fed twice a day walked at least twice a week, a pet on the head or a belly scrub daily

  20. I paid 5K once for a nine month old bitch it did work out as she established a whole line
I paid 3,5K once for a male ,grown , he bit me and didnt work out

I never think about all the money I spend I would get depressed I think. than again a man needs a hobby and it was a wild ride
    made friends for life
