What's your numbers ? How many curs you picked or got ? How many good ones ? How many where you thought 'that's it' ?
My numbers are from a long time ago, but I mostly picked the right/best one. I got everything from best in my block best of the street to best of an area, best in town, best in the country, even to best of everything. lol Prove me wrong. lol It just takes time, love and dedication ;);)
What I am trying to say is that the price of a puppy does not matter at all as long as you are able to pick the right pup(s) from the right breeder/litter.
I think slim's way is another good way. Getting the right grown dog for a good/fair price, one you have seen with your own eyes.
Well, if he would be a good conditioner then he should get most of the dogs for free. What about Rent-A-Dog ? :D

  2. I dont really get ya.......
look...i get the good eye for a pup thing.
and ive picked pups in that way my self.
but all im saying is you cant be to sure.
its great looking at pups and wondering.
but your never gonn for sure untill there older...

I aint got no high succsess rate lol..
    as i dont breed dogs...
if your dogs were the best of a area, country exc...then hit me a pm.

    All the best.

I was always sure that I picked the best available. How can you pick a pup at all without that 'special' feeling ?
Do you have to talk much to your grown dogs or is a short view or move all it takes to 'talk' to and with your dog ?
I believe special guys just get special dogs. And the average guy will just get average dogs. But average dogs can be all that you need.
And sometimes it is, of course, just like breed the best, cross fingers and hope for the rest. Good luck. :D:D

Look at rent-a-dog, but you first have to prove yourself worthy to get one. :-B

No truer words have been spoken.

A little off topic but to the point. My son was turning 16 and we put together a 95 4 runner for him. Bought two and made one. Turned out to be a really nice truck. I hang out a shop and my buddy did a lot of work for some guys who worked in the pharmaceutical industry. I mentioned I was looking for some stereo stuff and this one guy goes to the trunk and hands me a head unit. A Blaupunkt (sp?). My son's eyes lit up as he was into the car stereo scene. I asked how much and the guy says, "Just take it, I use shit like that to chock the wheels on my car". One internet search later and that unit was $699. Chump change to him, a shit load for a radio to me.

And the guy that ended up with the male I mentioned. They did shows for what would consider annual income.

Agreed, their 1K is a lot different than my 1K.

Picking working apbt pups doesn’t work that way imo. You can’t look at pups and tell who the best worker will be. One may be able to pick an active, healthy pup, but not which will be the best worker as an adult!

Yes, the most recognizable trait for the APBT, gameness, is a VERY difficult trait to get consistently!! If one could lock in gameness, you could add everything else down the line. Then like Slim says, Saturday nights would be boring. Knowing you have 2 game dogs and everything else is close to equal is like a coin toss. When attempting to be the best, you might run into something better. THAT’S when you PROVE you are the best by overcoming obstacles, not flipping a coin to see who wins tonight.

I understand what you’re saying. Buuuuut we aren’t horse breeders. Usually more money equals more expensive habits, like horses. When was horse racing and breeding EVER thought of as a working mans sport or breed???? If anything, most of us would be the hands that help at the ranch in one way or the other. Like attracts like, that’s why bulldog ppl don’t usually own race horses and vice versa...

  7. im a little lost Stickler.
ya rear them as best with love and care but when they older thats were you let the chips fall.

Yep i gotta a eye for a pup alright.
i can most certanly tell if a grown dog will fight just by looking at it.
    but this is the thing.
i cant tell you if that dog will fight for hours or miunets.i cant tell you if that dog can crush and kill your dog in ten miunets.
i cant tell you these things untill i seen them.
its the same with a pup..
i cant tell you witch pup will be the best when its older.
i can spot diffrent temprements exc.but its near on impossible to pick the best from the nest.
ive seen shy pups turn out rather hypo when older and hypo pups that are rather calm when older.
and the list can go on..
yes i pick a pup i like the feel of.
    yes i pick a pup i like.
and i pick it thinking it to be the next Zebo and we gonna take over the world.
and im in the moment..come on now pup!...youll do it when your older!go on me boy!...

But Colbys right when he says "we aint got a crystel ball".

    All the best.

Agreed it is a hard comparison. Horses are referred to as the 'Sport of Kings'. That is for a reason.

Bulldogs, not so much. More akin to hood rats and trailer park trash. LOL

I agree it is all relative depending on income, placed value, wants and needs, etc. etc. I know a guy who refinanced his house, paid $12,500 dollars for a stock car race engine, win $500 and be on top of the world, blow the engine and take a 2nd mortgage to repeat the same. All the while stepping on a sheet of 3/4" plywood for well over a year as the floor in his utility room and bathroom had rotted thru.

    Relative can also mean prioritizing.

At TG's I watched a guy come from behind the wall with two pups so I am sure he paid a chunk. Before leaving he topped off the oil and water in an older Ford truck.

When we left out for a picnic with Charlie I had my dog money in one hand and the house payment in the other. I will give you three guesses what a dumb ass like me did. The first two will not count. Priorities. LOL

I think it all factors in what one is willing to do with his/her money. And what one chooses to do is his/her business. And how they spend their money does not make it anymore right or anymore wrong for the next guy.

I like the Red Boy Snooty Bolio dogs. I could breed my own dogs or buy them from the source for $300. They were $300 when others were, 5 and then $750 and then when others topped a thousand, they were still $300. That may have spoiled me or made me put an implied value on good dogs or what you have to pay for good dogs.

    Great subject.

That’s what I thought! AGK sat back like, “you know, I AM lettin these pups go kinda low... I could use an extra couple dollars. Charlie gettin old, Pumpkin could use a new kennel....”

Na, I'm not one to tax like that. Maybe for prospect but never a pup.

Well yeah sure, technically once you pay for for something it's yours and you have the right to immediately sell it at an inflated price, but that doesn't make it right, if you get me. I would be pretty mad if someone did that to me. I dunno, I just believe in treating others how I would like to be treated. Also dignity and respect for others go a long way.

If I really wanted a pup I would pay whatever I could afford. If I couldn't afford it then oh well. But everyone's financial situation is unique to them. And of course a pup is a gamble compared to a proven adult purchase, but that is a difference you will pay for (if the owner is even willing to sell) and for a lot of folks that makes the pup more appealing. Most of the adult dogs I wanted to buy either the owner wouldn't sell or I couldn't afford lol.

    A short story of an experience I had;

I drove for a whole day to look at a litter years back... the breeder was willing to sell me a pup (his pick o the litter) for the unbelievably low price of $250. This was a while back though, but still cheap considering how well bred she was. He knew what I wanted her for as we discussed it and was happy to sell to me as long as I used her as intended and he actually said "A working man's dog for a working man's price" and I quietly thought to myself "I can afford to pay a lot more" like quadruple. I even asked him a few times if he was sure. He was. I like to think it's because he liked me lol.
Anyway long story short, she worked out and was possibly my all time favourite pup I ever bought. She was such a perfect dog for me I can't even describe it. She was hell on legs for anything that moved, bristling with energy, drive, confidence but also love and affection for me and my family. I tested her and she passed. She breathed fire and spat venom but she also sat in my lap when I was on the couch and slept on my bed whilst I slept in it. As long as she got at least one 20-30 minute walk a day and some ball work or flirt pole she was not destructive in the house, just pure love and affection. She even defended me without any training when I needed her to. I loved her so much that after her GT I only ever used her to hunt game, she showed me what she was made of and I didn't want to put her at risk again. God damn I loved that dog, she is the reason I love the breed more than any other and I've owned a few (and sill do). I still can't believe I bought her for $250 lol.
Recently I sold a pup to the same guy for the same price even though I believe he was worth much more (sire is 2xW damn 1xW, 1 xLG) because I believe it was the right thing to do. He did try to buy the bitch back from me twice, but I could't part with her for love or money lol. I tried to gift him the pup for free to show my appreciation for him but he wouldn't accept it like that. Great guy.

I get lightbills for about 300 dec-feb. He spoiled af lol. That’s the type of relationship one should want to get tho. Either get dogs/pups for the low because of your respect earned, or shoot the deal for someone earning your respect. Mutual respect is a must for me.

I want to be clear, I AM NOT talking about Slim's "source"... but because that phrase has been said a couple times associated to the price of a pup I wanted to make a side note. The source is not always the best "source" .. and I'm sure we can all agree to that.

Some "sources" get old and are no longer using their dogs for hog hunting and someone who got dogs from that said source keeps them in the woods catching the big boar hogs.... now who's pups are more "valuable"?

Just worth mentioning. Again, not referencing Slim's guy.

A pup is a pup but like at any other breed and their prices . Now me I haven't sold anything since 87 . I still have the same blood and frozen studs . You can bet if I was going to sale a pup I would want $3000 . Then I would hope you didn't want to pay the and keep that pup .

I missed this post but caught it when I read through this thread again. I appreciate the kind words and they are pretty accurate as far as the type of person I am. Not much in life brings me true pleasure these days. Honestly only 2 things, My family succeeding ( that just don't only mean blood either) and what I got going on here with my dogs.

I eagerly wait for the texts, emails, letters, phone calls from those I have entrusted with my dogs. I get a grin ear to ear when CYK sends me another 1st place certificate or when xxx sends me a detailed hunt report or West, Wardog, Bedo J or this person and the next who have or had dogs from me tell me how no amout of money would ever get that dog from them and how pleased they are with that dog. That gives me more satisfaction in life than 99.9 percent of the things I deal with daily in my life, not including my kids.

They don't all work out though and that's just a reality of the dog world. I want to hear about that though too. Believe me, I'm just as disappointed when that shit happens as the person who is telling me is since it directly reflects on me in my own head.

Percentage wise, I can count the people that were disappointed with what they got from me on 1 hand. That's gifts and pups sold. That covers whatever it is they use the dog for, many times, multiple different purposes.

My point is, your right. You have to love this shit or it will never be worth it to you.. A lot of sacrifices have been made in my life for this breed of dog and many hard times, failures, struggles, people unbelievably fucking me over, even troubles with the law and the having to look over my shoulder 24/7/365 as I know very well the games the law, AC and the courts play when they want nothing more than you buried under the jail and every one of your dogs given a syringe full of phenobarbitol simply because of the breed of dog you choose to keep and yet I still get up everyday, like many others involved in this breed and get to shoveling shit. I aint special, I'm just dedicated to a goal. I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it, it simply would not be worth it at all, for no amount of money..

Picking pups is easy if you picked the right spot first. I do not need for myself what everyone else can get. I am always looking for that 'special' stuff that's hard to get.
I let the mainstream stuff for the rest. But this takes time and dedication, or you just have to be at the right spot at the right time. Things like that happen all day, we just have to open our eyes and mind. Like everyone else I had no clue about peds in my early days. All I did was watching them dogs in normal life and their owners.
For me it's pretty easy to see what I call faults. Real clear to see faults are a no go for me. And for me personally a fault is also something that does just not fit real good in my eyes.
Too high, too low, too long, too short. Do i like the temperament of the dog ? Does it fit to my plans ? But mostly all you have to do is looking at the owner. Do you like the guy or not ?
It's often just a feeling maybe, but if one gets the feeling that the dog has to be saved from the owner, then this dog may be a good one ? Or good enough for you and your goals ?
Well, I just do not like to cull, so I never had much time for curs. lol It's simple like that. And that's why I always go a little bit deeper, actually as deep as possible, lol, with everything.
Getting a closer look at that whole family of dogs gives you enough signs to see, good or bad. Setting priorities straight and getting the percentages right worked for me.

Gameness is a VERY difficult trait to get consistently ? Really ?
I would say it's easy to lose that trait. You can't just get it or make it. It is there or it is not. Is gameness a trait ?
Preserving gameness and the breed in general could be the key in the long run.
Mouth and ability are nice to have, but those are no must have. I like the well balanced dog with some extra gameness, stamina and second wind.
And some 'finesse' (brain) will never hurt.
There is also a difference in gameness, not talking about different levels ... but that's another topic.
But real deep gameness is not the same as just a game dog.

And to make it clear, I know what a game dog looks like. And those things :D That's when you PROVE you are maybe not the best.
I am not the flipping a coin type of guy, but just give me 2:1 odds and I am on. lol

Pretty hard to give a short answer. Well, it's not just black or white, as always, but first check your reality, please.

Sorry if I sound rude here or there, it's not meant like that, it's just my bad english style ;):D

Colby is not right when he says "we". That's him. That's maybe the reason why he produced thousands of dogs, because ...
Well, we can call the whole thing 'crystal ball', no problem. And maybe I got one. lol

Your list is ok and you should go from there, but it still sounds as when you are not so happy about your dogs.
What's the problem ? We do not get always what we want, but sometimes we get just what we need at the right time. Patience, buddy, patience ;)
Don't put too much expectations into a single pup, just believe that you picked the right one.
And if it does not work out later, well, try again. :D
A honest dog will show you his true colors at all times.
Good luck, or better said 'good eye'. :-B
