Ive been considering this cross for getting coons out of old buildings and holes. Do you think the beagle would take the prey drive out of the patterdale? My thought was if you could keep the grit from the patterdale and nose from the beagle. Whats your opinion?

Personally, I'd just use the patterdale. Why cross? It's not needed IMO.

I think it could work out good. If you got the traits you want from both sides they would be great little hunting dogs. My friend has a Catahoula Leopard dog X American bulldog and turned out with strong traits from both sides, like two dogs in one. But that's the only cross working dog I have been around so maybe it doesn't always work out like that. I am sure others have much more experience on crossing types of hunting dogs than me.

My old vet is an avid rabbit hunter. He had an accidental breeding between his wife's Jack Russell and one of his females.

They were destructive little shits in the pen, destroying houses like bulldogs and dug holes half way to China.

Those dogs were natural born killers. They would run and jump like Beagles. But if they got on something they would shred it.

When he bred them back to his Beagles he got sub par dogs that did not make the grade.

The first cross I would think is a higher percentage of success. The second and third I think it gets harder.

  5. Beagle cross terriers have been a cross used for centuries....
'When one has a fighting biting cur,bid him a beagle to join...my nymps for Hare will do.'
    the old charlton hunt.1730.
Plummer loved this poem..and i belive it influenced to use this cross.

This cross has its up points..
do you want the dog to just bay at the coon?.if so.this cross should work well for you.
or do you want your dog to grab or even kill the coon?.if so.then a pure Patterdale is for you.

Remeber the old charlton hunt wanted a dog to bay at its fox.
    so did many Badger diggers.
    so did Plummer.
the Beagle blood should make it stand back of its qurry.
thats why Badger diggers used this cross.because if a dog tryed to choke a Badger in a hole like that one in the vid above.the dog would have its teeth knocked out and its head and jaw crushed to peices.

    Intersting topic.
    all the best.

This is true to a point but plenty of hound terrier crosses will get stuck in when they know your close at hand. But for barn storming there’s no need for a cross since the extra nose is wasted indoors.also they get bigger so can’t get where the terrier can.

This is the only reason for the cross imo.

Im looking for something more for barnstorming. I think I decided against it. I want something to catch game not just bay at it.

  14. Nice topic.....

Beagle blood genraly (or is meant to) gives the dog voice.or more voice.
so the dog bays like fuck at its enimy.
im not saying Patterdales dont bay.
but even the ones what do bay, still get stuck in.
i think the reason for this is that they were developed in the North of England to kill big hill foxes...fox hunting in the North of England was considerd as pest controle rather then sport.
were as in the South of England fox hunting was more of a sport on horse back.
so when the hounds ran a fox to ground in the South the terrier was reqierd to make the fox bolt so the feild could chase it on horse back.all tweed gin and tally ho lol.
so its been said you wanna catch game.and ill take it you dont want to chase a fox on horse back lol.
well the patterdale or the lakeland is for you.
and that vid of the one on the coon is real impressive.
I think your gonna need a harder sort for them coons...they can clime up trees man.a baying dog might make the coon bolt, but i bet the coon will head for a tree then.
yeah you want a hard patterdale to make sure you get that coon.
and of watching that vid ......its the patterdale all the way i think.

    What dose anyone eles think?
a baying sort for the Racoons?...or a harder sort?

    All the best.

As you know soze we don’t work them on coon in there homeland but from what I’ve read coon are clever so I wouldn’t want a Baying terrier to give them a chance to do damage or escape hard terrier all the way but that doesn’t mean a stupid terrier.

There was an exotic pet shop that shut down fast last year not far from me. Dead snakes and spiders have been found in our nature reserve so raccoons wouldn’t surprise me right now as much as last year lol. I wonder how the law stands on hunting invasive foreign animals? Food for thought lol.
