In July 2018, the FDA announced that it had begun investigating reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods, many labeled as "grain-free," which contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients (listed within the first 10 ingredients in the ingredient list, before vitamins and minerals). Many of these case reports included breeds of dogs not previously known to have a genetic predisposition to the disease. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), a collaboration of government and veterinary diagnostic laboratories, continue to investigate this potential association. Based on the data collected and analyzed thus far, the agency believes that the potential association between diet and DCM in dogs is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors.

We understand the concern that pet owners have about these reports: the illnesses can be severe, even fatal, and many cases report eating “grain-free” labeled pet food. The FDA is using a range of science-based investigative tools as it strives to learn more about this emergence of DCM and its potential link to certain diets or ingredients.

Following an update in February 2019 that covered investigative activities through November 30, 2018, this is the FDA’s third public report on the status of this investigation.

My first keep I fed Wafcol 14% Protien kibble, fed it dry, no meat, veg or supplements, Wafcol 14% and that was it.. Looked like Ryvita crisp biscuits and smelled like them too, worked the hell out the dog and after 2 weeks the poor bastard couldn't even lift his leg to take a piss.. Totally drained, used up, physically and emotionally exhausted, zero nutrition to replace the energy he expended in his first week.. I think of Wafcol 14% today and hang my head in shame! Pure shit, total rip off, a dozen stale loaves of cheap bread mixed with cardboard to feed an athlete.. Sorry boy!

No mate, the Wafcol 14% I used was worse than the Greyhound, and that was bad enough! I used Wilson's, Beta Racer, Febo, Eukanuba etc and thought they was all shit, wasn't until I read Bob Stevens Velvet and Steel book where he mentioned Chicken Livers that I caught onto actually feeding a dog meat, genius I'm not! From there I fed cooked Ox hearts, tripe and Asda Minced beef and my dogs just turned supersonic, way I see it is like this mate, nearly all kibble dog food is wheat based and fortified with various nutrients, vitamins and minerals.. Well way I see it, so is doughnuts, custard creams, corn flakes and Jacobs crackers, but try sparring 10 x 3 minute rounds on that stuff and you're in for a bad night.

I've fed all kinds over the years. Honestly I decent grain free food may have a few advantages such as runny eyes, skin or coat that normally associated with allergies. However, old time Dogmen just as Mr Kirby (rip) believed that Purina Dog chow, Old Roy ect was as good as any as a maintenance food.. Jmo, Dex

It's just like with humans. Foods affect individuals differently, both human and K9. I can eat McDonalds every day and I will stay lean at 155lbs. You may gain 40 lbs.. Dogs aren't that different in that aspect.

After all the hoopla I have been feeding valu pak for a few bags. Dogs love it and look good. I used sportmix and liked the results but decided to switch it up. Roughly the same price, better ingredients and the dogs eat less but look better.

Victor, pro plan, etc are keep feed in these parts. I dont know anyone with a bigger yard feeding either to the whole yard. Maybe pups, geriatrics, and dogs on keep but not 10+ at a time.

I generally don't listen to anyones food recommendations... especially would from anyone who doesnt know which end of the dog to feed that's for sure.

I agree with AGK as I have seen dogs do well on some shitty food.

I started off feeding Field Trial, it was like $6/50lbs. (not so much a sign of my age but that me and the dogs hooked up a really long time ago, LOL).

Every other chunk still had feathers. We fed two five gallon buckets a day. Never knew any different back then. Dogs won, dogs lost, dogs hunted, dogs lived long lives, dog died early, dogs had pups later in life, nothing ever attributed to the cheap shit they were being fed.

In January a deer dog/walker mix guy up the road had three or four of his better running hounds slow down hunting unexpectedly, lay around lethargic for a day and then die. His thoughts/my thoughts were they either ran into something hunting or someone laid something out that poisoned them along the way. He had two taken to NC State and the autopsy results showed kidney failure in those two and the blood work from the other two as well.

The vets put it on him feeding 24/20 dog food year around. We buy from the same feed store. We both add meats and what nots. The only difference is he feeds in a couple three troughs and they eat together and they have a couple community water buckets. Of course, mine are not tht social.

Over a years time the two sets of dog are really similar. During hunting season the dogs eat a lot of fresh meats and bone and after hunting season it is mostly dry food. Him more than me as I do a little better with the meats/fresh.

He runs his dogs just about year around.

But his 24/20 dog food is killing his dogs. Mine have spent a lifetime on the same bag.
