Ok guys went an seen my local butcher today and asked him if he has a scrap box for my dogs I could buy and he said he sells them 40p for 1lb. Basically it's chicken carcass and whateverer cuts he has had for the day so I bought a dozen and he also sells rmb for 30p a lil bag so bought a dozen. Where do I go from here in terms of what else I need to do/get before I start feeding. Got about a weeks worth of kibble left. Thanks in advance

try and follow a 80/10/10 ratio a lot of times those scraps are mostly raw meaty bones. The ratio is 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ (5% liver, 5% other secreting organ). Too much bone and they will have dry, crumbly stool, too much organ and they will have the runs. It's all about balance and each dog is different. Here is a chart for reference.

if you're confused, i would wait on switching until you do some more research and feel confident in the process, feeding an unbalanced raw diet can do more harm than good. As i've mentioned before, if you have a facebook account there is a very helpful raw feeding group, they have beginner files to help get you started.

If you really love your hounds...going raw is the best thing for them. The more red meat the better the diet, but chicken/poultry based diets with red meat every so often works also. Make sure that the meats have a nice percentage of fat. Stay away from the ultra lean meats. Add a nice ratio of bone, weekly fish supplement...I usually give whole wild caught fish after freezing them for a week, but I guess can fish is a good source of omega 3. Also give a slightly boiled egg twice a week, and a portion of liver weekly...preferably beef liver jmo. A little research on oil and vitamin supplemention goes a long way, if you feel as though your model diet may be lacking something. Just be careful not to over do it, everything is done in moderation...too much of anything can be bad for you in the supplement department. If fed correctly supplements won't be necessary. Just pay close attention to skin, coat & eye health and worm on a monthly basis. The dogs will be way more healthier than feeding any commercial diet, and have the look to prove it, with more energy than usual. Give it a try and add a little exercise, and don't over think what you're trying to do. You'll see the improvements

  8. I started feeding raw around 2000 ( I think) I never went back
the easiest way to start raw is by adding some boiled water over the raw meat ( do that for like a week )
now a lot of barf people will get mad , I do not know if u work your dogs in weight-pull competition but my experience after looking at the dogs and reading several white papers on the subject is that they do need carbs
I threw out the raw vegetables and started working with a grain based supplement I have used this recipe and still using it for the one dog I have
this dog is a boerboel , he is a bit smaller but I have no bone or hip issues

basically my diet is 15% grains , 30 chicken ( with bones), 20 beef , 20 tripe and the rest is based upon what I have might be duck , sheep goat or whatever
I tend to throw in the occasional , sheep fat , eggs , old bread etc

I feed twice a day , worm every 6 months , add oil or other supplements
    the dogs looked good

@paddy I never used the same feeding methods as Bulldoghistorian, but neverless his dogs as I saw them, many years ago, were always in tip top shape, and that's a fact, so he've my vote.

@Bulldoghistorian If you dont mind me picking your brain why did you go with a cereal based carb source as opposed to something like potatoes or pasta?

  15. for two reasons
    1) all meat that I have is frozen and I is still pretty cold by the time I feed it using cereal based which has to be well in cooking water gives the dogs a hot meal every day , and especially in winter ( not scientifically proven ) I see it as a plus
    2) the cereal based food i am using due to variety with slow and fast carbo is a plus and there are vitamins added to the food ( which i don't have to add )

and third and most significant the dogs did great on it , which was proven in various blood test I did
let me add that during a preparation for a weight pull it was also easy to increase fat and fat loading trough chicken etc ( I don't use any flax seed or other oils )
u can add fat salmon or natural fat sources to ensure one goes pass the 5 minute energy reserve ( sugar to fat transition) barrier and also the adjustment from lack of oxygen to blood transition around the 15 minute mark depending on the heart lung function of the particular dog

one thing I like to add , feed the same during a work out as in rest adjust carbo and fat according to the stage the dog is in
dont change the diet cause the competition season is coming up
I recall in the nineties we would switch to high carbo foods and lot of dogs back than ended up with serious kidney problems and skin problems
when I switched I never encountered a kidney problem again and seriously reduced to almost non existent of urine waste ( the old brown urine issue)

still I would advise to flush , flush , flush

I am rambling here , I think , don't mind me just an old fool

Thank you for an in depth reply @Bulldoghistorian ..please ramble on haha... i feed very similar to yourself and also use a carb source at around 10% of total diet mix... i use a cereal based source really just because i can pick it up off the shelf here... Also interesting to see you add water to feed as i find most raw feeders dont

Thinking of putting my pup on raw, now I've read from different sources that a pup of 4 months old needs to eat about 7% of it's body weight. Does that sound about right to you lot?

  18. just watch the dog and feed accordingly

But is it wise to experiment on the dog when what you put in to them at this age is vital for development?

just try avoiding raw pork, if you are gonna give them that at least cook it a little.
