family = dog + breeder?

    Is a family of dogs determined by a prepotent foundation dog, or the individual breeder's methodology? Does one supersede the other(s)...or just semantics?

    Examples?

    I will go with breeder's methodology. Go with Red Boy. Red Boy was a prepotent producer. In the first few breedings it was all about Red Boy and him as a producer.

    Then over time that offspring went to different places. The breeders then bred for their desired traits in the Red Boy dogs they had. Strains develop, yet it is still a Red Boy dog.

    Examples: Holland bred Red Boy dogs are a lot differen than Mims Red Boy dogs. Even amongst the Mims Red Boy studs there are different traits. Mims JIggs threw a much rougher, durable Red Boy dog. Spiffy in turn threw far more intense, methodical finishers. Mims Punch threw dogs that were all nighters.

    All were Red Boy. But each breeder can steer the bus in their own direction.

    OK so a RB family of dogs can be sustained over time by multiple breeders with objectives different than those of the original breeder…thus the modern RBJTB lines, for example…correct?

    But does not the original RB gene pool become diluted over generations to the point when offspring characteristics are no longer similar to the foundation dog?

    Yes. In my opinion. The RBJBT are crosses so the objectives of the RBJBT are different because it is a mix of several families.

    The original RB gene pool has been kept 'pure' in several strains. Mims kept three or four pure RB dogs and crossed them to other Bolio-Snooty-Red Boy dogs to make Mims dogs. Sometimes these crosses were predominantly Red Boy, 75% or better. With the 1/4 or so out sometimes that showed thru in the breedings so that particular strain is no longer straight RB.

    Of Mims straight RB dogs gameness is pretty much a given, as was the objective of breeding to the original RB dogs.

    There are a lot of strains that are still pure. A lot of these pure dogs are more valued as producers and a large chunk go/went untested. Papers look good but the RB does not necessarily mean RB, if that makes sense.
