It May Be Illegal To Chain Dogs Soon

A new effort is underway to pass legislation that would make it illegal to chain dogs. The effort stems from a deadly dog attack in Suffolk that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy.

Dogs chained all day pose a serious threat. That is the message from animal rights activists here in the Commonwealth and they want to make it illegal for dogs to be tethered for more than three hours.

The cousin of a little boy mauled by two family pets is teaming up with people for the ethical treatment of animals. Their goal? To get a statewide law passed making it illegal for pet owners to chain their dogs up. Two-and-a-half-year-old Jonathan Martin was killed by two family dogs that had spent most of their lives chained up. Jonathan's parents, Heather Frango and James Martin, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse and were sentenced to three years in prison. Supporters of the effort say chaining a dog for extended periods of time makes a dog mean and aggressive.

In Norfolk and Virginia Beach it is against the law for pet owners to chain their dog for more than three hours.

This kind of crap is getting out of hand! A chain is an inanimate object and does nothing to a dogs mentality. The human owner, on the other hand, neglecting his dogs and not socializing them properly DOES cause a problem. Doesn't matter where the dog is kept, if it's not raised properly,it will become a problem.

REALISM people, not EMOTIONAL reactions. Gosh Darn Peta-philes.

WTF! PETA needs to keep their effing noses out of everything. Chains do nothing more than SAFELY contain an animal. I for one have never heard or seen a chain being abusive to an animal. Why cant anyone understand its the owners fault, not the chains.

wasn't it proven that dogs are happier on a chain than staring through a fence of a kennel all day? anyway the hell with them cause i don't see how they are going to inforce this bullshit law anyway

The kicker this time is the little boy's (that was killed) cousin is a PETA member.

The whole area is crawling with them. PETA's headquarter's is right across the river in Norfolk. This was the second incident that has happened in the past 2 months around here. I figured it would'nt be long before they stuck they're nose in it. Actually, PETA has been pretty low key around here since they got busted for illegally dumping the bodies of dead animals in privately owned dumpsters. Damn Granola's, I hope this chain B.S. doesn't get passed through. If it does, the "breed profiling" will start, its been done before.

Well if you live by the HQ deal with them. Picket them, in combat we have to adapt and over come sometimes using like tactics. When they cry wolf send in wolves. When they cry pain send in torcher.

If they pass this, it will lead to the deaths of a LOT of dogs (those there will be no other way to safely secure). Of course thats just what peta wants anyway.

And that is the day I move to my land in the mountains and just co exsist with the dogs and the animals that we eat. I don't have to own them I am just part of the pack.

Yea, my ideal place would be in the mountains with a cave that had a stream running in it. I really like Mt.Mans place also, natural water bowls!!LOL Now that's the way to go, always fresh water for em.

I recon it wont be long before folks in Russia will have more rights than here!! I really feel for my children, and their children, should the Lord tarry!!

My dogs are happier on chains. I have kennel runs that come into the back porch, I have pens. They are happier, and healthier on chains!! and safer.

It is definately a plug to let the dogs get into trouble, killed and banned. Everyone involved with peta has their heads stuck up someones rearend that is full of smegma!

yup and soon they will microchip people. Track you like lab rats. No privacy. That micro chip may be your number. The mark. I think it is. Every one will have a chip it will be like a friggen bar code. With out it you will not be able to bank or do comerse or travel. I will be in the hills hoarding my ammo and living off the land till my day comes to go hang out with the Saints. Till then I will be part of the woods watching every one throught the scope. There is your thought for the day. lol

I'm glad to have found this site. I've been on myspace pit bull groups but they're full of tree huggers that would completely agree with this crazy ass law. All my dogs are chained and are completely fine. The chain or any form of containment has no mental effects on the dog, it's all the way he is handled/care for.

lets get this straight-You can't use a chain to contain your dog, but it is all good and well to use barbed wire to contain your horses and cattle! this is the most f--ked up law making i have ever heard of. oh not to mention you can use electic fences to contain your live stock also. this is so absurd. i dont think any crazy ass laws like that are on the books here in IL but it probably wont be long b-4 they try. god i hate peta.

In Dekalb County Georgia (Metro Atlanta) it is illegal to chain your dogs. I have a friend who breeds Pressas and he has a huge fenced in area on his land and he has a few of his dogs in there chained. he got fined for each dog.
