I'm curious as to what the process is and how to cure the skin if larva is laid on it even with salt? :D A butcher in my area doesn't make hides althought he has a shit load of it that he sends to a company to make boots or something out of them.

I always thought you just slap a shit load of salt of both sides and let it dry out but there must be another process.

If you are cureing it for the dogs thats about it.I salt the shit out of the raw side.Let it dry,it takes a week or two,cut it up wash off the salt and your ready to go.The pups love it as does the grown dogs.Cheap and easy.

I have always laid the hide out on a piece of wood, a piece that large would use plywood, and start on one corner and place 4 penny nails every2-3 inches, stretching the hide as you go. Once the whole hide is stretched out, use a sharp knife to scrape as much meat off the inside of the hide as possible. Then coat with salt, cant use too much. A couple weeks, dump the salt and check the hide to make sure it is cured.

Another way is to make a frame out of tree limbs, 1" in diameter. larger than the hide. then instead of using nails, you will use some type of string or small rope to lace the hide to the frame,it'll kinda look like a shoe laced up when finished, once again, every 2-3 inches make another lace. With a deer hide, you can use the sinew for the string. Then scape the skin for flesh, and either use the salt, or you can build a fire, throw some wet leaves, pinestraw, or anything else that when thrown onto the fire will smoke like crazy, and prop the frame at an angle to where the smoke will saturate the hide, but not burn it up. Let this go about a day or two, depending really how hot you allow the hide to get, and you will be able to tell when it is ready. The cool thing about that method is that you can make a water bottle out of the hide, and it is more plyable for clothing.
I know this is for dogs, just thought you might want to know. Gotta be prepaired. I believe that too many folks are inslaved to stores. Many things that folks could do a couple generations ago have been lost to commerce. You just go and buy it. What will you do when the mark of the beast comes? I wont take it, and I wont starve either.
