i doubt one 40 or 50 lbs dog is gonna take down a 200 lber but i could be wrong.could be some kind of rambo of hog dogs. those dogs working as a team could accomplish it no prob. as for bigger breedings it would only make sense this is a desire for hog dogs.

It is true that the watchdog's started off in the right place, but I believe that the fella sold to someone else, who went to breeding in a different direction. I seen some of them huge dogs and am surprised to see them advertised as "watchdog", because all of the ones I have seen are not anywhere close to the "_ugglston's Pitbull Farm" .The ones I have seen were typically 60-65#ers, but not 100+.

As to the smaller dogs hunting, it would be wrong to say a small dog cannot do well. The dogs we have dont necessarily "take the hog down", the more "wear the hog out", and when the hog is at exhausti

on, then we live catch. Though a 40lb dog can eventually wear one down, a 65lb dog will wear him down quicker.

As to the Carver dogs, I have a female here that weighs maybe 36lb, and thinks she is the cock of the walk.

As to the lines good for hog hunting, usually the rough barnstormers work very nice. The lines that folks would say,"there is no way that dog could take it as he gives it," would be something worth trying.

We tried a couple of them Boogieman dogs and they are working pretty nice.

Hey thanks alot, that really helped out. I found that Davis' Boomerang's grandson (Deloach's Rocker) appears in Jaeger's pedigree four times (six generations out) and that his great grandson (Miller's Jughead) appears eight times.
The other dogs in his pedigree that I recognized are Trump's Clint Black and Miller's So Lo.
It looks like a lot of Boudreaux' and some Carver's, Wilder's, Hunter's, a little Crenshaw's.

"Troll" or no troll, good things can still come from threads like these as more than just one person has previously asked the same question and many more would like to.

I don't honestly know, or care for, lines of APBTs bred specifically for hog hunting. I'm not a fan of breeding these dogs for just one thing, especially when that one thing isn't necessarily what it was designed to do (yes, I know dogfighting is illegal, but I would rather see these dogs excel in several venues due to that fact instead of just turning it into another breed by fitting it into the box with other breeds).

The largest APBT we've used to hunt with was 65 lbs. Most of ours are in the 40 lb range with a few in the 50's, and yes they can do the job just fine. The dogs are NOT supposed to kill the hog. Their job is to catch and hold until the humans can get to it and do the actual killing. If I wanted to use bigger dogs, then I'll go with American Bulldogs as they range from 60-90 lbs and already are bred for the job. Why must we create larger "APBTs" to do a job that another breed has already been bred to do and has the size desired?

Fury hasn't seen any rabbits here, but she and I went after 3 does yesterday. Obviously, they won. I have no idea what would happen if she would have been able to get a hold of one though (minus getting popped in her melon). She goes ape shit when she sees a squirrel, tries to climb the tree. Glad to see the wascilly wabbit got what it had comming.

I don't have the story... someone said a 40/50 lb dog couldn't take down a 200 lb hog so I found the picture and posted it from the gallery ;)

more than likely had several baydogs, and probably another catchdog. i've seen 35-45 lb dogs latch onto a 300lber and get drug through the woods by the hog, and that pig there looks much larger.
i always liked a good game-line dog, i aint much into hoghunting no more, can't really buy dog food with bacon.

it seems that apbt is used alot in hog hunting in australia, also in the states.

it seems apbt already hunted hogs long ago, actually apbt have diferent style (dogvsdog) and hog hunt is diferent, i guess that adaptation comes into play but they have to (re)learn before going hunting and great D A is not the best thing when working with other dogs.
personally i will try to do some hog hunting

  18. alot of hog hunters take those 40-50 pd dogs and cross them with dogos they are bigger can run longer and have quite a bit of grit. but straight up pitbulls i personally would not get a Watchdog bred dog. you generally take more than 1 catch / bay dog so if you get some good game dogs and rugged curs ( not they pitbulls lacking game, the houndy curs) you should have a good hunt.
