Pit bull left outside in cold found dead

Owners say teenage sitter neglected duties while they were away for 9 days

    By TAVIA D. GREEN
    The Leaf-Chronicle

When Kelvin and Cherelle Taylor returned to their Brady Drive home on Sunday, they found garbage strewn across their yard, notices from Animal Control on their door and "T-Mac," their 1-year-old Colby pit bull, dead inside his doghouse.

Three other dogs had been taken by Clarksville-Montgomery County Animal Control.

The couple had put a teenage sitter in charge, leaving him a key and instructions to feed and care for the three pit bulls and one Chihuahua while they left for the holidays.

Cherelle Taylor said the sitter was told to feed the dogs, bring them in at night and let them out in the morning. They offered the teen to stay at the home to take care of their pets.

"It never happened," Kelvin Taylor said. "I don't know what happened."

Monday morning, they began cleaning their yard. Their other dogs — who they said might not have eaten in the nine days they were gone and lost 20-30 pounds — were inside resting and eating.

David Selby, director at Clarksville-Montgomery County Animal Control and Adoption Center, said the case is under investigation.

"We received a complaint, and we went out there on the 31st about abandonment of these animals. We left notes," Selby said. "My on-call officer was called after hours by Clarksville Police on January 2 about these animals. There was one found dead in the dog house. There was one malnourished and one in the house. We picked those up. The owners came back yesterday, and they called the police when they saw our notes. Evidently they went on vacation from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3. A juvenile friend of their son agreed to look over property and take care of their animals, and it looked like that failed to happen because of the weather. We are still investigating to see what's going on."

    Winter pet care

As temperatures plunge into single digits this week, pet owners need to be aware of their animals' welfare, especially at night, Selby said.

For outdoor dogs, owners should make sure insulated dog houses have extra bedding, a flap or door to block the wind and a means for the dog to build warmth inside.

Straw is the best insulator for doghouses, Selby said. Extra blankets are OK, but once they are wet and freeze, they can't keep pets warm. Dog houses should be positioned to block strong winds.

During cold weather, dogs need more food and water.

"They are kind of like people. They eat more when they get cold to replenish their energy supply," Selby said.

Also, water needs to be checked frequently to ensure it's not frozen. Bring pets inside when temperatures reach freezing.

"Any time you leave an animal out for hours on end, their bodies will deteriorate, and they can't handle the cold weather," Selby said. "We ask people if you're going to own an animal and it's outside use a little common sense."

  2. why the hell would you leave a teenager in charge of your animals? most teens i know are too self absorbed and can barely wipe their own ass let alone take care of a dog on their own.

  10. i totally agree.

MOST teens I know couldnt take care of a goldfish!

when i was a teen i had a job and took care of my pets vetting and food. I have met very few that work to take care of pets or help their families. They want cell phones, ipods, laptops, clothes.

I was never like that. I sure hope my kids will not be like that.
