I joined up to the community recently. I'm starting this thread b/c I want opinions of just what I should "do" with my dog. I'm inexperienced with dogs in general, and APBTs in particular.

I read anything I can about the animals and I embrace the concepts of "game-ness" and "working dog". I understand that they are serious animals and gotta be respected as such. I'm willing to put in the time and $ they require.

    My goals:

    1. Learn what he is. I was told AmStaff by the woman, but in looking at photos here, he looks more towards the APBT, though he's a little too large at 75lbs to be pure imo. I don't have papers or any of that. Any good guesses what his makeup might be?

    2. Learn how condition and train him - properly.
    a. Set up my property with appropriate equipment for him. I've been reading about some of the chaining methods, and I like what I've seen with the axle. I'm handy and def like the idea of a springpole. What are the "gotta haves" when it comes to equipment when you're starting out?
    b. Diet. I'm leaning towards the raw regimen. What's a ballpark estimate of what this might cost / week?

    3. Get knowledge. What' are the best books out there? Good info is worth paying for, so cost isn't my big concern with literature.

Please tell this noob how to get the most out of his dog! I'm really excited about the breed, and Tank is my first, but won't be my last.

There is a lot of information in the archives on this site. You should read up first and then ask any questions you have afterwards, Not trying to be mean or anything but those types of questions have been asked numerous times on this site.

Great post wardog! One of the most helpfull replies ive seen around here in a while.

To RJT1 - as somebody already said, read as many threads around here as you can. Dont forget to use the search function, it really is a great tool. Also as wardog told you, the pitbull bible by california jack is a very insightful and informative read. I still reference to it all the time.

    Welcome to the forum!

the only thing i disagree about is the book (which i personally recommend "the complete game dog" by ed faron, i read both and thats just my personal opinion, althought you cant go wrong with either) other than that, id say wardog was right on the money!

The complete game dog is good but over priced now.

    Hey fellas,

Thanks for some of the replies. Wardog, that was some great info. There's a meat market down the road and I'm going to do some checking this week and see if I can ease him into it. Approx ~ $22 for 50# food is reasonable - again, more concerned with what's best for the dog. I'm a vegetarian, ha ha - should be a fun trip!

    - had to ask about my animal specifically. I really don't have enough know-how to say what he is. Just from looking at photos, he seemed closer to pure APBT, but his weight was a little high. I've got no lineage info, but I def liked hearing he's less AS and more APBT. If he's just a bit overweight and out of shape, dropping 15 or so # would bring him right into PB size range.

    - Stratton's on the way. I'd heard good things. I'd done searches here and followed some links to a site with some Cali Jack excerpts. Good practical info; that's just what I'm looking for.

Quick ? Wardog had a picture of collars. I use a thin, round leather collar. I was thinking it would provide more pressure, which would help "correct" him when I walk him. I've noticed that what I've read about their pain tolerance is true. Anything wrong with thin vs. thick.

Nuff for one post. Thanks for the feedback and patience. I'm just so excited about this breed - really amazing creatures.

Don't correct him when he walks. Let him pull you. It's more excersise for him and you:)

idk ur specific dog but as a general rule know that apbts have high pain tolerance. That wouldn't do a thing at all. U can use a choke chain, alot of people dont like them but i havent had issues with them. Remember they are ONLY for walks tho, without tension they slip off.
