one of my dogs is chewing on the pads of one of her back feet. I've checked her cause at first i thought it was fleas but i have treated her for fleas so she doesn;t have any. I noticed her limping on the back foot a few days ago so I checked it again an I can't see anything wrong other than it being all raw an bleeding from her chewing on it. Any advice on what would cause her to chew on it?

My boy was licking and chewing his feet and my vet recommended KetoChlor to use on his feet when bathing him. They said he had an infection on his feet. Dont know if its the same thing that your dog has, but it worked for us.

Had feet chewing problem with one of my dogs when it was younger. She was chewing specifically the pads on feet. Turned out to be shortage of B12 vitamin. A course of B12 injections helped to deal with it. But I assume there are several reasons for such behavior, so I suggest you to consult your vet first, before doing anything to treat this condition.

Allergies maybe, I would definately take it to the Vet before it gets any worse. Some dogs will basically eat parts of themselves. Good luck.

one of my dogs used to chew her feet all the time. wound up being food allergies. changed her from a chicken-based food to a grain-free fish-based food and no more problems.

have another dog that has both food and seasonal allergies. he chews his feet till they bleed if i dont give him a zyrtec everyday.

but yeah, see what ur vet has to say. maybe it's something easy to fix...

  8. I had a cat as a kid who had this same problem, it can be caused by a number of things from infection, vitamin deficiency, seasonal allergies, or food allergies. With this cat it was a seasonal allergy thing, she would tear herself apart and be a bloody mess. We managed it with steroid shots several times a year.

What are you feeding? Are you seeing any pattern with this occurring (in warm months, in spring, etc)?

I think the vet is a smart idea, he can always do a panel to find out what exactly is causing it.

What food do you feed?? sometimes you can cure the problem with changing the dog's diet. A friend of mine had this problem; he got a better kibble and added a raw chicken leg quarter to his dog's diet and it did the trick for him.

  10. wanted to bump this thread up because I am going through this with one of mine right now. We had a problem with hair loss and a change of food cured that, just wanted o know what happened in this dogs case, because we still have the chewing of foot pads

Also, some people keep their dogs in crates for long periods of time, if that's the case, many dogs that stay in crates tend to chew on themselves when they get frustrated and bore. I've seen more dogs chew themselves from sitting in crates over any other issues. JMO

Chewing on one pad can also be a sign that there in something lodged in the pad like a cactus thorn or something very small that is irritating the pad. This will cause the dog to try and chew the foreign object out of the pad. Take a look at the pad and if something is stuck in there soak in the epson salt until soft and remove it with some tweezers.

it still could be diet depending on what ur feeding. also, could be BOTH food and environmental allergies. I have this problem with one of mine. He gets a special diet (completely grain and soy free and is a fish-based food), plus a Zyrtec every day. Sometimes i add a couple Benedryl caps on days when we go out in the fields or woods and I have to wipe his feet with moistwipes when we come back home.
