Brandy had her second Schutzhund training lesson on Monday and one girl in the club took some really nice pictures of her that I wanted to share! :D
She just turned 5 months old on the 25th.

Also, I think it's awesome that you've gotten her into a controlled sport field. People get all bent out of shape about ABPTs in Shutzhund. But me personally, I see the sport for what is really is. Complete control and obedience. No, I don't think APBTs should be trained to attack people. And yes, I think that's what most European-based Shutzhund is about. BUT, I can also say that I have never heard of a Shutzhund-trained APBT attacking someone without warrant, or PERIOD for that matter. I think the kind of people who put in the kind of time and money it takes to have a dog correctly trained is not the kind of person who lets their dog run at large to possibly hurt someone.... k, end of my rant, lol!

Thank you! :) Very well said! I don't think Brandy will ever view the protection aspect as attacking someone, more of a tug game. The person she will be "biting" when the time comes is the trainer she adores. I got chewed out on a working dog forum for just posting pictures of her when I first got her because she is a "useless" breed. Brandy is gonna prove them all wrong! ;)

To me, i don't really see any difference between attacking a sleeve and attacking a hide during tug-of-war. It just depends on how you train them. Yes, I understand the difference between a true personal protection dog and a dog that goes after the sleeve. And someone who has invested the time and money to train their dog to react to a sleeve versus a real live protection scenario (which does NOT involve a sleeve, it involves a muzzle and NO protection gear, or at the very least a bite suit without muzzle) is NOT someone that folks need to be worried about. As a person who is also involved with protection mastiff breeds, I can safely say that the VAST majority of folks who may decide to involve their APBT in (at the least Americanized) Shutzhund have no intention of their dog actually attacking someone, and are responsible enough owners that they would prevent a situation from ever even arising.

There is a HUGE difference between innate human aggression and trained control on a bite sleeve...

Exactly. I view this has a fun way to bond with and train my dog. A very expensive and time consuming way, but we are both enjoying it so its worth it. I watched the older members of the club practicing before the trainer evaluated Brandy, and those dogs are so well trained and it was obvious they were enjoying what they were doing. I definitely have no intentions of turning Brandy into a "attack dog". This is just going to be one of the many sports she will be competing in (and hopefully kicking butt!). I have high hopes for what this little girl will achieve. :)

Well kudos to you! I couldn't take my dogs out into the field and test them for shutzhund, because A) they haven't been trained for such and B) i haven't spent the time with them to get them to follow those specific commands. (pretty much the same thing). Yes, I personally think that my South African boerboel would pass a personal protection test with flying colors. Would she pass a Shutzhund test? Probably not. She is a breed made for innate human aggression. She will protect me if she thinks a true and honest threat is near. She's proven that for me before. But would she go after a bite sleeve? No. She wouldn't unless I trained her to do so. It's a game and an exercise in obedience, nothing more. Will she play with a flirt and springpole? Yes, she will, and if I spent the time with it, she would play with a sleeve. But that's all it would be. A bonding exercise in play and obedience. And same goes for my APBTs. I could easily train them to go for a sleeve instead of, or in place of, a cowhide. I choose not to because spring and flirt pole is enough for me, for what I intend for them to do, conditioning-wise. But I'm not fool enough to say that one (the sleeve AKA hide) can substitute for the other (an actual person upon defense of family or property).

Good luck to you and your endeavors! I commend you for spending the time (and money) to train your dog effectively and result in a well-behaved and controlled pet and companion!

Thank you very much! :) It's always nice to hear from some who understands the sport.

    Thank you!

She is doing good! Right now we are just working on building our working bond, her focus, and getting the basic obedience commands down.
