i have a male that's been licking his front leg.I notice he had lick it to the point it became a open wound. I get him antibiotics for 14 days. I want to know what can I do to bring the swelling down? I've tried ice packs every 30 min.

Do you have a pic? The inflammation should subdue when the infection goes away. I wouldn't put anything on it personally just leave it alone and if it's truly infected then give antibiotics that will rid the infection present and cause the swelling to go away.

any idea why he is licking his leg ? parasite, injury or other ?

I have a dog with acral lick, I look at is a a bad habit brought on by boredom in smart dogs , similar to a human that compulsively bites their own nails (a thinking disorder)

Sound's like there could be a poss:grass seed or some forigen object in the leg,,did ya change the dog's bedding lately,?????use a peroxide mix and see do's it draw anything out...could be a tiny object causeing re-infect..if ya can't fix it go to vet ..he feel around for object then make small cut and squeeze out...best of luck.........

My vet and vet tech have gone to the super bowl. That's the only vet I trust. I hope you understand what I'm saying.

Only thing i would say,is give it agood flush-out ,giv some anti-inflam's..try head collar to stop him licking constant,my mate had accident with his young male had same prob lately, same thing would not heal cause he kept licking it,, will ask him how he got on..get back..2

Yep..if ya can flush out, and use collar to keep him away from it..the problem we had was weeks healing, but got hold off at last,if you can do the above then make aloevera/honey wrap to prevent re-infect,we then gave sardines/oily fish to help healing process every second day with normal feed, the wound then got smaller then used medicated powder to keep dry,,it worked ok but ya have to keep at it,,the reason i'm saying is that most of these things are easy to get hold off,,hope he gets better for ya..........
