how to choose the right pups from the litter

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by bullyville, May 4, 2013.

  1. When you breed two pitbulls with average ability or gameness and get a litter of seven pups, how many will turn out to be average or even above average as far as gameness goes? Is there a percentage method for this type of breeding or is it just a roll of the dice?

  2. No way anything like that could ever be accurate

  3. By accurate do you mean it is impossible for two average dogs to produce an above average game dog? Is there a certain amount of time you should keep the litter before you start to cull the unwanted ones out of your breeding program?

  4. Yes wait till they are grown then cull what you don't want in your breeding program.....

  5. There are no short cuts to producing good bulldogs............

Best way to pick em is einy miny miney moe let em grow up and roll, roll, roll... Then cull appropriatly.... lol

It's a gamble with a pup every time. Better your chances by getting to know the breeder whos dogs your interested in and let him point you in the direction of the pup whom he feels will suit your needs as to what your looking for in a dog. The breeder will know which one could possiblly fulfill your needs with the dog best since the good ones spend alot of time with their litters and will know them best. That is of course subjective to whom your dealing with....

  9. Thanks... I kind of figured that, that was the only for sure way to see which pups have the most gameness and drive....

    lmao agk.
Every pup is a roll of the dice, no matter what the ablity or gameness of the parents are.

  12. Maybe I should have but I mean I just don't wanna breed bs you know...

  13. First thing is don't worry about selling or "placing" pups keep all you breed if you can't wait till you can then raise them try them in the sport of your chose and cull the ones that don't fit your needs and keep/breed the ones that do......... If one day you want to let some go (sell pups/prospects) don't worry if your doing it right people will search you out..........

  14. You right Dred... I feel that 100%

just remember that pups should NEVER be asked to show gameness, so that shouldn't even be in the equation.

Breed your own stock, work em, be honest and cull. Buying pups is over rated.

But needed to get started or form a good relationship with a breeder. Honest folks do still place pups/dogs if your intentions are on the level.

Let me know if anyone else does this. I dont care about any color in particular but if i look at a dogs ped and out of buckskin, green and orange all of the good males were green i would lean towards selecting a green male. Just my prefrance. It dosent mean that my choice will be any better than any of the other pups. Does anyone else tend to select pups that look like certain ancestors in the ped?

We've had these same threads so many times. There is no such thing as CHOOSING the right pup. Only the fortune of the one you took ending up to be what you want. Pick one that is healthy, mentally and apparently normal emotionally and go home. There is nothing this side of mutation, deformity or mental instability that one can see in a pup, nor can you judge its future by anything at all. All the voodoo as to reading a pup is total bullshit.

Good advice from everyone. A pup is a pup. Let him stay a pup as long as possible, but keep an eye on them as they may turn on young. If you're not careful you may lose a few. Then there are those. that don't turn on until 3 or 4 years old.
