Hi all, have a question with regards to finding good painkillers for dogs that aren't the "herbal" holistic walmart variety. would appreciate any help, Im not opposed to looking in the farm section if anyone has names of specific drugs that are safe to use on dogs.

Metacam and/or Carprofen both work very well and are given orally. Bad thing is you need a script to get them. Over the counter, Yucca extract works ok, you can get the from 1800petmeds and dog aspirin will work ok too for minor aches and pains.

Ibuprofen is NOT recommended for dogs. it's a very strong analgesic and wreaks havoc on a dog's stomach and liver. buffered aspirin is the way to go, but each dog metabolizes it differently and it's not recommended for long term use. go by the dog's weight and don't mix/combine it with any other analgesic. 1800 petmeds requires a script from a vet, so unless you have one, you won't get medication from this company.

  8. I had a bulldog got lost in the hunt camp over night ,when we fianally found him there was an old roll of barbed wire he got twisted up in and it was pretty bad since it was cutting to the bone in places.Long story short he HAD to go to a vet, they gave him morphine in the iv bag for the whole week he was there! I remember how loopy he looked when I would go to visit, stumbling around.I do not know the dose but my dog was 45lbs and he was otherwise healthy. They assured me that as long as he didnt have any organ damage (heartworms, bad liver ect) that it is the oldest pain killer for people and animals. This was at the vets office, I dont think it would be safe for somebody to try at home though.

Metacam is the best pain killer for dog.

    What's a stronger anti-inflammatory Metacam or Dexamethasone?

Don't give the dog ibuprofen. What type of pain is the dog needing relieved from? Don't give an anti inflammatory unless he has inflammation obviously.

Paracetamol can be given to the dog but with much care and a watchful eye. Aspirin can be given too. If you can't afford or don't want to go to the vet you can always still phone them for advice.

Dex can be used as an anti-inflammatory but has no pain reliever. Metacam is a pain reliever as well as anti-inflammatory.

If no other options buffered aspirin 10mg/kg.

Also when switching NSAIDs you need to do a wash out period. Do not switch from Metacam to Rimadyl. Without a 48-72 hour wash out period. Same as going from an NSAID to a steroid such as dex.

    Don't know metacam.

Ibuprofen is not what I would call a strong analgesic. Not sure how safe it is for dogs at all but I do know it takes its toll on the renal system so I wouldn't give it to a dog who's really busted up.

Most of the stronger analgesics are pretty well regulated under the Controlled Substance Act. I use Tramadol (from a human's prescription, and I usually give 1/2 of a 50mg tab=25mg) for my 40lbs dog if he gets really busted up. You do need an MD's script for it but a lot of doc's write for it for migraines, arthritis, or other chronic pains that need strong relief because its supposedly not as habit-forming as other opiate narcotics like vicodin and morphine.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid. I don't see it as being very useful for a dog who's been injured.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not an MD or DVM so take everything I just said with a pinch of salt.

Dex treats shock as well as allergic reactions and has anti inflammatory properties.

Ibuprofen is not safe for dogs.

Tramadol is an analgesic (pain) but has no anti inflammatory properties.

I've always kept a bottle of tribuffered from walgreens. It was recommended by the vet.

My training is in emergency medicine and I'm not really familiar with corticosteroid use in treating shock. I've only seen it referenced in older write-ups about post-match care and thought it was outdated. Is it supposed to act like a vasopressor?

  19. Tramadol or aka Ultram is what is common today.

Yes Tramadol for the narcotic side. However it has no anti inflammatory properties. It is used in conjunction with Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Previcox (NSAIDs) and so forth.
