Game Bred APBT As a Pet

Diesel as you know dealing with working German Shepherds you understand the different levels and intensity of prey drive with an APBT generally speaking they are not human aggressive but are highly aggressive with other animals that is usually controlled through environment and precautionary measures. Owning an APBT is like owning a loaded gun because these animals are so intense and prey driven that it's not uncommon for them to chase down and kill anything moving on four legs. So in essence owning an APBT is like owning a loaded gun that needs to be properly maintained and kept locked up to prevent any tragic accidents. Are there human aggressive APBT'S? yes but it's not a trait that dog men typically select for and breed for but like any breeding if the trait pops up unless the dog is culled the possibility for passing that trait along is high when bred and some dog men have their reasons for breeding and keeping a human aggressive APBT although it's not within the normal realms . Most responsible APBT owners will not keep or breed a human aggressive APBT but they do pop up in a family of dogs from time to time.

Coming from a GSD background then, you know how many differences there are within the breed. Its very similar with APBTs ...only with Pit Bulls you get the fight over what to call them haha. In GSDs, no matter how they're bred theyre always GSDs. With these dogs you've got people saying the only APBT is a gamebred one everything else is a Staff.

Breeding is going to play a big part in the kind of dog you want. And just like in GSDs you can get a working dog and a pet quality dog in the same litter but that pet quality dog is still going to be more work than a pup from a breeder who is producing all pet quality.

You have been given solid advice Diesel, especially from sadieblues, who is obviously a very knowledgeable person in regards to this breed. I think you are coming into this from a better position having owned working line GSD, so you know what a highly energetic, extremely driven dog bred to work is like compared to the typical "Pet Bull" buyer. As long as you are willing to put the effort in, work the dog and are prepared to learn as well as be a responsible owner a game bred APBT can be a great house dog. BUT they are not for everyone.

...we all have different opinion's,,,,,,i don't think any game bred animal should be a house pet,,they never were,,may-be that's old fashioned to some....but if ya want a dog to just lie around the house,,i would go for something else....but to each their own...g-luck...

To me a dog that lies around the house ain't no dog! But I agree with you if that's all he wants APBT ain't for him.

First off you can do what ever you want to do. Although the APBT has one of the best dispositions when it comes to family members or any people in general it all comes down to each INDIVIDUAL dog. You can have 2 brothers from the same litter that have totally opposite dispositions. The importance is to KNOW what you are getting in too and have the knowledge of the know how. Its usually when one is unprepared is when the shit hits the fan and that fan can blow that shit pretty far lol.

Well said Cajun, maybe the first time i agree with you...If you want a gamebred pitbull you should understand dogfights and how to prevent them and properly break them up.You dont have to like dogfights but understand the nature of the beast and understand accidents happen usually due to irresponsible owners.STUDY UP and make sure you know what your getting into.I reccomend adopting an older dog who has worker out its teenage anks as they are more predictable.

Alot of good points on here. I can't say what you should do or shouldn't do but I personally wouldn't have a APBT just laying around being a pet. If you work your dog but also want a "companion" sometimes, I can't look down on that. But just being a pet, I wouldn't.

I want to clear up a comment I made so that the wrong thing isn't inferred. When I mentioned loaded gun, I meant it not about these dogs, as they are as affable and loving as a whole as any breed on earth. The loaded gun refers to such a moron himself, or herself, who knows nothing about proper safety precautions, and refuses to learn them and adhere to them with good, common sense.

...if looking for a pet,, english/staff ,,,make very good pet.....and some very nice looking dogs amongest them...and can make a decent all round pet......

  18. Thanks for the info. Alot of great honest points.

I was thinking the APBT would be less human aggressive than say a german shepherd or doberman.

I can deal with the animal and dog aggressiveness.

  20. Yeah - I hear ya.

The wife and kids want a dog and if we get one in my mind I want one that will at least be a deterent to bad guys (earn its keep a little per say). I would never train the dog to be aggressive, but at least some dogs look a little menacing and will keep the bad guys away.

Obviously all dogs are a deterent with their barking, but a guy at work had his house burglarized a couple years ago while he was at work and his wife took kids to store during broad daylight, he had a golden retriever and apparently they did not care. I imagine if that dog was a german shepherd, pit bull or doberman they would have thought twice.

Maybe I am over analyzing..... and should just get a poodle.....
