Catahoula Pit Mix

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Speedpeddler, May 6, 2014.

  1. My son has a new rescue that they told him was a Cathoula/Pit mix and I'm wondering just what we can expect from this dog. He drops her off two or three times a week when he has to work long days so she spends a good amount of time with our EB's at our house.

She's almost a year old and weighs 50 lbs. Looks a lot like a Conditioned Pit in that's she is long legged, long flexible body, lean as can be and all muscle. Incredibly athletic and wants to run all day. Submissive and playful with other dogs and avoids trouble but quick to respond to overly aggressive dogs if she can't avoid it but doesn't push it. Jumps my six foot fence with ease and absolutely loves people and most other dogs. Chocolate color with four white feet and white blaze on her chest.

So, anyone have any experience with this cross and want to comment on your dog or what to expect from one? Only had one Pit in my life and this dog is very similar in a lot of ways but also different. Has a great nose and will follow her nose where ever it takes her. Not much of a prey drive and ignores squirrels but is a lizard killer.

lot of hog hunters use this cross!!

  3. Really? I'd be interested to hear more about that. I can see where this dog would be a good tracker with her exceptional nose but don't see her as a catch type. She's got the physical attributes but doesn't seem to have the desire. Could change as she gets a little older I suppose.

Catahoula pit cross is what created the Merle pitbull. Guy close to me the one who did it and banked serious money peddling pups til the ADBA quit registering dogs down from his dog venom which I think was 3/4 apbt 1/4 catahoula. He hung papers on her as full blooded and had a good run at it for about ten years but ADBA put an end to it after most of the dogs having health problems

    Can you post a picture?
My roommate adopted a catahoula (and who knows what else) mix pup a while back. He is sable merle, deep chest and legs for days.... He's almost 9 months old now. He's a stubborn little shit. Kinda just does what he wants, its difficult to keep him motivated unless I have food. He listens but about half of the time he ignores the first command and I have to threaten him lol. He's kind of a dipshit too... has no concept of where his feet are. He trips over his long dangly legs and walks all over my dog. He likes to work though. I've been having him drag chain around the back yard and run the carpet mill. He has soooo much energy! Thank god he has an off switch though lol.

  6. That pretty much describes her personality with the exception that this dog is super agile and athletic. Energy to burn all day long.

Sorry no pics but I can't get them off my Iphone and onto the forum.

He's athletic but agile hardly describes him  I'm hoping he gets a little more "graceful" as he matures... right now he's like a wrecking ball taking out everything in his path. He's a goof.

    Catahoula mutt at 6 months
I posted pics of him. He has a more serious look to him now I think. Gained 10lbs since these.
I don't think he has any pit bull in him so he probably looks quite different than yours.

Catahoulas are a pretty rough dog that we have used as bay dogs and they will catch but better for baying. I had one female and she was one tough bitch. I came home one day and realized that I had a yard accident with one of my pits off Tants Gr Ch yellow and the pit killed the catahoula. Man I was pissed. I always liked them and they can be a handful.

A mix breed dog can act like either of it's parents, a mix between the two or anything in between. Also what lines it's parents come from, whether it is scatter bred or purpose bred (working cross) will also contribute. The dog seems to have at least a moderately high energy level, so just keep her active and keep a break stick handy just in case. Do you plan to do anything specific with this dog?

As an aside, a long-time friend of Carl Semencic's worked for many years to establish a new breed stemming from a Catahoula/American Bulldog cross. The fellow was a Connecticut police chief, as I recall. I don't think he ever got got the cross to breed true, but he loved the one-offs results.

We have a CKC English Bulldog ( a shot of Boxer in the 6th generation) Looks like an EB, acts like an EB in every sense of the word. She got out a couple-three months ago and guess what? She found a Cathahoula/pointer/shepherd crossed up dog. She had 9 big healthy puppies. At 7 weeks they look just like a litter of pitbull/American bulldog pups. I think I am going to call them a rare breed of American Bullitt Shephards. I think I can get rich.

Actually we have found homes for most of them, and with four wormings, two sets of shots, a boat load of puppy food and the time invested I am close to financial ruin. LOL. S
