so i'm walking my 42 lb. mutt when all of a sudden some huge ass black dog - looked like a shorter more muscular great dane- comes running up and practically lifts my dog off the ground trying to sniff her. my dog looks ready to go on this thing and I'm getting ready to beat the ever living shit out of it when i hear, "DON'T WORRY HE'S FRIENDLY!". i turn and see some 20 something blond chick with a leash in her hands walking towards us. before i can say "get your dog!" my dog jumps on this one and starts shaking it by its mouth. forget the lady, i'm trying to use my stick to get my dogs mouth open and i can't because the bigger one i squealing and dragging he all over the place. this big A dog trips and tries to do the submissive roll. doesn't work. i told my dog "no" in a firm voice, which did pause her. and the lady is screaming "buddy" "Buddy" doing the most slow run ever towards us. this dog, the one on the ground, decides it's a good idea to growl. it's on yet again! except this time "buddy" fights back and looks like he's motor boating my dog. so i go over there with my stick and what do i hear? a loud crack. the dogs disengage and i rush to my dog to see if she's okay. she's got blood on her so i'm scared. but it's not hers and the other dogs is whimpering loudly and the woman is practically crying over her dog. my dog is chewing on something and i tell her to bring it. she spits out a damn tooth on the ground and sits there expecting something(?) i just think "holy crap" and grab my dog's leash and leave. made her leave the tooth too. what really pisses me off about this is people do this so often! you let your dog run loose and never think of the consequences. oh your dog is friendly? well, however unlikely, maybe mine is not. your dog is more than twice her size and tries to crowd all over her. if a human did that, he'd get knocked out. then you cry vicious! vicious! when your deer-sized dog is running towards us! sorry for the rant this just pisses me off. anybody else had this happen?

you should have muzzled your dog.

If everyone obeyed the leash law there would be no need for a muzzle.

If your dog is loose I think you're responsible for whatever happens. This happens to me all the time when I leash walk my dog but usually I'm quick enough to put myself in front of my dog and tell the approaching dog no. I won't always be that lucky though and my dog's nearly been injured because I'm restraining it and it can't defend itself. I often get the he's friendly too but my favorite is when the dog comes out multiple times and they still haven't caught their dog and offer no apology.

^^Yup....Happens all the time, people are idiots and think they are the exception to the law. There is this lady with two little rat dogs on the corner, lets them out everyday in the front no leash. Why? Because she don't wanna pick up shit in her fenced back yard lol. It's also the same house were the cock sucker thinks its ok to park in the fucking street cuz she can't pull around his big ass truck....Back to your post, the few times I was able to get my dog back and kick the other dog sniffing back and the owner grabbed it......Sucks the situation got that crazy for you. Hope your dog was good and you don't here from this dumbass wanting vet bills paid.

what if she got hurt? anything can happen so she should be able to defend herself. remember my dog is a 42 pound female and this dog is at least 80 lb.....

nah man she's fine. but the owner seems smarter now. she always keeps her dog on a leash and crosses the street if we come walking. and i know dat feel bout the rat dogs. at least then you can pick your dog up.

It's pretty common in my neighborhood for dogs to run up to mine. I now carry a break stick and walk my dogs on a harness which makes it easier for me to pick them up. I used to walk 2 at a time, but that was too difficult when they got excited. My dogs have got a hold of a couple dogs, and that has made me extra alert. I always walk by open garages with care, as it seems dogs can come running out. I have considered carrying a spray bottle with vinegar to spray oncoming dogs. It is my understanding that the unleashed dog owner is responsible regardless, just as if a dog gets run over, it would be the owner's responsibility in most cases.

A hard boot in the face of a stray/loose dog always works well for me. I try to scare them away with a loud, deep voice but if they keep coming they 're getting that 10.5 to the face without hesitation.

I usually care a small can of this,
"Pet Corrector" - Stop Barking FAST! (Video Available)
    By The Company of Animals"
I wasn't sure if a link to a product was allowed, so I just did a copy/paste. But it is just compressed air in a small can that lasts quite awhile. It makes a pretty loud noise when compressed and startles the crap out of most dogs.

I deal with this problem alot also... I guess the leash law is only for pitbulls. .. he's friendly .. oh really.. to u maybe but not to me and my dog... I normally walk with a stick to beat them off alone w my other stick just n case... But get this I'm having problems with a big ass and 75lbs blue pit.... my next door neighbors.... WILL NOT KEEP HIM CONFINED. I have tried numerous times to ask them nicely... I don't want to be at work and something bad happens... He even charges me and my family, they scream he's friendly but his tail is straight in the air.... I keep warning them. What can I do?

Get some pepper spray and hose that S.O.B down
When I walk my dog I keep a can of fox labs 5.3
On me if that is not enough then there is always
    A boom stick around....

I do these days as my dad taught me years ago. "Step out the way and let the dogs sort it out, your dog is on leash so the law is on your side"

okay here: it's idiots like that who call there dogs pit bulls and screw everyone else over. i plan to get a bulldog or two when i move out, i don't think it's fair for the idiots who shouldn't own dogs to ruin it. you don't even have shoot the dog. just aim anything heavy and they may rethink letting their dog do as he wishes. when the black hog on sticks comes back, i have a can of spray ready to light him up. that's my two cents.

I have NEVER had the problem, and you won't either... if you carry a small lightweight cattle prod(sometimes called a 'stinger')
one little zap sends them heading for the hills(without permanent damage). They can be purchased at any livestock/feed supply

Hate when they're the little dogs because the owner sees me pick up my dog and they laugh, they don't realize is for their safety not mine.
