To muzzle or not to muzzle?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Mitchell84, Jul 11, 2015.

  1. Hey guys I have 2 pits both rescue dogs, have never had any problems untill the other day when my male went for another dog ...... I was thinking about buying him a muzzle for when he is off the lead but I read that it can make dogs aggressive and I really don't want that as he is my boy
    any suggestions ?
    Thanx Mitchell

Better safe than sorry, sounds good...
Buy a heavyduty muzzle that attaches to a collar and has lead rings on the side of the muzzle which you attach your lead to...
When your dog goes after the other dog, not only is his mouth muzzled but when your dog hits the end of the lead the head stops and the back of your dog circles out leaving them exposed to the other dog and it usually self corrects the lunging problem to some degree...
This muzzle technique is also used with walking harness that have lead rings on the side and ive seen elderly with big dogs that heel with its owners, but im sure the owners being so humble and old that the helps the dogs attitude also...
When this happens stay relaxed as your dog will feel it, take control of the situation with a short leash and say sorry tho other dog walker and keep it moving, with out going too far out of the way just steer clear of other animals will also help, good luck and forsight to not be the problem...

Sounds like he's is aready getting aggressive if he went for another dog? I have never experienced a muzzle making a dog aggressive, it is usually what happens while being muzzled that triggers aggression. Running off-lead can be a risky business, I have always been fortunate to be able to condition my dogs in rural areas, so have never had the problem. Personally, I wouldn't run off-lead muzzled or not, unless I was in an absolutely safe area.
As EliasPistola said, "Better safe than sorry", is the best advice.

I guess my question is Why is the dog loose to begin with? These dogs should never be free to roam or get themselves into trouble due to being off lead where the possibility of coming in contact with another dog is inevitable.

Well said AKG.. These dogs seem to be rather jealous of one another atleast mine are. No way I could let them run free together.. Eventually the muzzles has to come off...NOW WHAT.. Sometimes u can't teach an old dog new tricks.

AGK speaks the truth, it's unresponsible people like this that ruins things for the rest of us, APBTs are done of the most loving and loyal dogs there is towards humans (mine "likes" female dogs, but i would never allow him to get close to any dog) in the end these dogs are a weapon with a very sensitive trigger towards other dogs.

I have never heard about muzzles making them aggresive in any way, this is just a myth "fur mommies" made up because they migth think its cruel to put a muzzle on a dog.
If you just make sure to reward your dog with treats during the first times interacting with the muzzle and make it a positve experience for the dog its not gonna care if it wears a muzzle or not.

Can you post an example of this kind of muzzle? I think it's important that a dog can pant and breath freely while muzzled. I have seen muzzles that seem to inhibit panting and breathing.

My vote is to not have dog off lead unless in a safe secure fenced area and you are there observing.

  11. Some solid advice above...

Just throwing this out there, as a community we need to work on our reading comprehension, and assuming positive intention. Dude might've done nothing wrong...

He could've had the dog on a leash when it went for the other dog, or not, we don't know. All we know is Mitchell is asking about a tool, and whether or not to use it when the dog is off the leash. We can point fingers and add lib all sorts of scenarios but it's counterproductive.

Like they said don't overreact they're not ticking time bombs. Its just science, they will attack quadruped mammals, they'll fight threatening ones to the death, and view smaller ones as prey. It's usually a good idea to separate/avoid most 4 legged animals.

I wouldn't muzzle my dog unless it'd bite me or a kid, that's just a dog Id put to sleep.

In my experience most people ask before they approach a pit bull, now when they ask you say he is Dog aggressive we don't know about new people. If they don't respect your word/space it's their problem. I do know you'll want a bulldog that can bite when a street dog comes at yall thinking its supper time. Good luck with your dogs

wheels on meals, really view small ones as prey???
in the twenty years Ive studied countless bulldogs iI have seen that in a very small fraction...
Please tell me how many years and bulldogs have you evaluted to come up with this conclussion???
And will attack any thing with four legs, you must have been raised around curs son...

  15. Ive been around them since I was a 8 and I'm 22, and I've dealt with enough to know what prey drive is and what it looks like. I know some good curs as well, but I'm talking about bulldogs.

Are you actually mad about the fact some pits will kill lizards, rats, cats ,coon, and other dogs that come around? What do you call an animal about to be killed by another animal? I call that bitch prey! Idk about your dogs and personally dont give a shit, but some of mine do all that.

Your homophobia is surprising, considering how worried both of yall are about where my dads cum ends up. Probably just jealous he doesn't fuck real men like you two studs. Tough break, at least you got each other.

I need one of those for my chihuahua when I am passing out candy for halloween LMAO.

Back to the topic. The problem is the leash law. Its faulty and not effective because even if your dog is on a leash and another dog was not you can still be held liable regardless of who obeyed the leash law or not. If the leash law actually protected the owners who abide by that law then there wouldnt be any need for any dog to be muzzled.

Its like saying we should penalize the dog who is abiding by the leash law further by making him wear a muzzle just for those who choose NOT to follow the leash law in the first place. LMAO
