hey fellas. I am a chicken guy lookin to get a dog but the dog would just be a family pet for me and my Youngin. I've never owned a bulldog before but think I'd like to give one a try. Question is how will a game bred dog with children?even temperament?and in a home atmosphere ? It would also have a chain setup in the yard also.I also am aware the bulldogs ain't naturally aggressive towards people, however I would like a dog to protect my property from man or animal. Just lookin for some opionion.

I think you would be more than happy with any staff/bulldog type dog. Not the best gaurd dog in my opinion though (shouldnt be human aggressive) but will give its life for you or your youngin if it had to and put a hurtin on any animal that comes on your yard. The red devil dogs are what they are red dogs most kennels around with red dogs claim there OFRN. Not sure where you are located but lots of states have shelters packed with the type of dogs you are interested in. I would go check out a shelter lots to pick from and little investment for a damn good dog.

A game bred bulldog is the best dog you can have period. If that's the only dog you have that dog will become very attached to you and your family. I would just do a little research about the differences in the the families. For example the alligator line can be a bit nippy and heavy chinaman can be like that also. Just remember that a game bred bulldog is a very emotional animal so treat it as such.

Go to a shelter, best advice ever. You will save a life plus it will be so attached to your family for giving that chance, that you will be more than pleased!

Im all for rescuing but honestly, the rescues usually come with to many vet bills for me. I know pure breds can to but the two of mine that are pure bred? Not a single issue yet, the little generic dog? Skin issues.

Do you want a guardian breed? You posted you want a dog to protect your property and family. If that is the case, go for a Akita, german sheppard, chow chow or a Dobie.

I want to add, Pit Bulls, IF bred correctly are not human aggressive at all. They are loyal, and will protect but they are not a guardian breed. They might also eat your chickens if you are not careful.

American Bulldog. Best of both worlds. Aaaaaalmost as athletic as a pit-bulldog and will protect and guard with the best of em. Do research on whatever you get. Especially if you want it around your kids.

Most game bred dogs have good temperament towards children and family members....most have sound temperaments.....and some can be great in a home atmosphere as long as enough activity is done with the dog.....majority of bulldogs arent aggressive with people that is the reason they dont usually make good guard dogs......the down side they are really really animal aggressive meaning anything on four legs at around there height level can be seen or be considered as prey.

If you want a guard dog there are way better breeds suited for that task.

The best guard dog I have ever seen in my life by far was a alapaha blue blood bulldog second to none in my opinion as a guard dog. Great with family and could tell a scum bag from a mile away. Very smart as well and can hold there own. A no bullshit type of dog.

You might look into a boar beisser as well. They are a large dog, mine is about 90lb but gentle with my son and has good protective instincts. Smart , fast learner too...

  15. If you're looking for a guard dog can strongly recommend the Fila Brassilero, those guys don't play around. You don't have to teach them how to guard their home, they will do that by themselves ;)

Just lock em up if you have visitors around, because they see almost anything as a threat to their ' family ' If not socialised properly, and even then they will always stay wary of strangers.

Apart from that they're extremely friendly and affectionate towards you and your kids, they don't tend to escape either and will do anything to keep you and your property save.

Not the smartest dogs around but definitely one of the best guard dogs in my opinion.

Health wise they'e also pretty sturdy and durable, didn't have much health problems with the breed.

Just read about the breed and talk to some breeds, definitely helps.

( my opinion: don't buy one form show line, they tend to be softer in their temperament. )

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND A FILA!!! They are the extreme of guards from what I understand. “Just lock em up if you have visitors around, because they see almost anything as a threat to their ' family ' If not socialised properly, and even then they will always stay wary of strangers.” Doesn’t sounds like a good guard dog, maybe junkyard. A dog who might not even bond with the whole family could be a liability. What if a friend of a friend gets out of line at the bbq? Ol Joe-boy locked up in the house, what he gone do? What about the cable guy, meter man? You’ll get a note on the door for scheduling if you have an aggressive dog. Trust me...

IMO get yourself a dog that can be trained AND has the natural instincts/smarts to turn it on and off... AMERICAN BULLDOG

I’m not saying they aren’t or can’t be good dogs, but who do YOU know that has one? How many different kennels can you visit?Exotics are nice, but you have to do your research thoroughly. VERY thoroughly. I’m speaking from experience with ABs. An AB is more dog than a lot of ppl can handle. A FILA looks like more than MOST ppl can handle

  17. I agree, they're definitely not a dog for everyone, but their bond with the family is amazingly strong, just make sure that you bring your friends over when they're still young because their ' circle ' closes after 1 year or so, everything in their inner circle is good and they will everything they can to protect it, everything outside of their circle however...

Where i live it's the prefect dog, but I live desolate and the people that live here are mostly no good.

Filas are amazing guard dogs, but definitely not for everyone.

And I agree with your an American bulldog sounds more than suitable for the job :)

I don’t want it to seem I’m going against you, friend. I just have experience with ABs and would recommend them to anyone looking for a well rounded “pit bull”. A lot of the time the “look” and “attitude” is what ppl are looking for in pit bulls. ABs give you that in spades. Ppl crossed the street on SIGHT of my AB. My medium pitbulldog, not so much. My 65#er gets the same respect

  19. I don't know if this was directed at me,

But I fully agree with you, I mean I like Filas alot but a Fila is not a pitbull, and a Fila doesn't have the attitude of a pitbull let alone the gameness.

But the reason that I would rather have a Fila than a pitbull as a guard dog because the only thing pitbulls get from being a guard dog is a bad reputation. the minute a pitbull bites someone it's all over the news.. and that's what I don't want.
