Warrants issued in dog fighting investigation

Arrest warrants have been issued for four men in a dog fighting investigation.

Calhoun County Assistant Prosecutor Karen Pawloski said Thursday the warrants were issued alleging dog fighting and animal abuse and neglect.

Names of the defendants were not released.

The warrants were issued as part of an ongoing investigation and following police raids at four locations in Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties on Sept. 10.

Sheriff's deputies said the investigation had been underway four months before the search warrants were executed at homes in Battle Creek, Emmett and Bedford Townships and the City of Portage in Kalamazoo County.

Ten dogs were seized and are being held at the Calhoun County Animal Shelter in Battle Creek. Officers said they also seized equipment, including treadmills and bite poles — which investigators said are used to train dogs for fighting — computers and paper records during the raids.

Two men whose homes were raided, Craig Farrington, 47, of Bedford Township and Latshaw Lynn Porch, 55, of Portage, told the Enquirer in October they did not fight dogs and did not assist others.

"I am a mental wreck over this," Farrington said in October. Five dogs were seized during the raid of his home on Wellington Avenue.

Three pitbull puppies owned by Porch were seized from a property on Division Drive. Two other dogs were taken from that site because of alleged neglect, investigators said.

More: Owners whose homes were searched say they don't fight dogs

"I have never fought a dog in my life," Porch said in October.

Both men said they do attend dog shows for pit bulls and train them for endurance, strength and agility.
