<TABLE width=450 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Cat Bites Dog, Owner Wants Leash Law for Kitties</TD></TR><TR><TD>[IMG]After her pit bull was attacked by a neighborhood cat, a Sacramento dog owner is calling for an end to free-roaming felines.

Dawn Capp likes cats and dogs and has one of each. Her pets get along with each other. As far as other animals in the neighborhood, that's sometimes a different story.

Problems arose when her pit bull Tauri was in her backyard. An unknown cat came over the fence and bit Tauri on the face. Capp showed News10 the photos to prove it. "Right up there is a big red blotch," she said, pointing to a photo. "The blood was draining,"

The dog's wounds required $100 worth of veterinary care and antibiotics. Tauri is doing well now, and enjoyed a brisk game of Frisbee during News10's visit. However, her owner said it is not right that a wandering cat can be allowed to cause such mischief without any repercussions. "A cat comes into my backyard. When I let my dog go out to go to the bathroom, [it] attacks my dog and gets away scot free," said Capp. "I have no way knowing who the owner is. I get stuck with the vet bill."

"If this had been my dog that had attacked a cat, it would be all over the news," she added. "My dog would be in an animal control shelter now. I'd probably have a vicious dog citation after me."

In the city of Sacramento, a dog found roaming without owner, leash or license can be impounded by animal control. There are no similar regulations for cats. Animal Control's Hector Cazares thinks any attempt to restrict cats would be nearly impossible to enforce. "I just have a sense that the public would be totally opposed to trying to keep cats on leashes," he said.

Cazares says if a cat is being a destructive nuisance, such as digging up the yard to use as a litter box, peeved property owners can trap the animal and bring it to animal control.

Although cats are allowed to roam freely in most American cities and towns, some municipalities have approved "cat confinement," "cat leash," and, in some circumstances, even "trap and kill" ordinances.

Kudos to this person for contacting her local authorites when her dog was attacked by free roaming cat. She pushed the issue & they even did a news story video on it! (I just LOVE revenge.........)

Also want to add for anyone in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, the leash law DOES apply to cats!

Oh man, I have had cats all my life and have learned to never under estimate the cunning of a cornered feline. Did you all see the animal planet clip about the AC guy that was trying to take a stray cat in and looped its neck with a leash, the cat then proceeded to wrap itself around this guys leg, leash and all as it dug its nails into his inner thigh and reached up and took a chunk out of you know where......can you imagine the ER gossip regarding that injury?????

How many of us would have actually called the news team......I know I wouldn't have but good thing she did. It serves as a valid point. I can respect what she did.

The ONLY reason the owner contacted the local news media is to basically poke fun at the fact they news programs all over the US are reporting daily ongoings that are NOT news. Stories of dogs attacking cats are making front pages. Stories of loose dogs attacking other loose dogs are making front pages. I believe that this was reported in seriousness, but to also poke fun of the media in general.

Along the lines of cats...The barn I board my horses at has a wild momma cat that traps the owners chihuahas(sp) and any unsuspecting smaller dogs and big dogs if she has kittens(she has been caught and spayed now). She waits under the house for the dogs to go between the house and laundry room. She then jumps out and attacks them. She has gotten my Rat Terrier 3 times. :( When we got our pup, after all his shots of course, we took him to meet my horses and the goats, pigs, calf, rabbits, and chickens. We were all sitting on the porch. Momma cat came out from under the house and made a move at the pup who was laying in the grass, playing with the daddy cat(also neutered now) who likes dogs. Momma jumped up to run at Jesse and Jack came off the porch moving faster than i have ever seen this lazy little guy run and pounced on momma. Needless to say she doesn't attack my two dogs!! She used to live in my feed room, but since my dogs are in and out of there everyday, she has moved!

Free-roaming cats drive me nuts. I hate the double standard. "Your dog must be on a leash, but oh, cats are another story." Back when I lived in a trailer -- hey, we were poor -- there was a neighborhood cat that got under it and tore holes in our skirting. And then this sweet grey and white cat took its death when it came into the yard with two of our dogs. And then this long-haired calico got treed by my mom's Dogo and was later harassed by a mob of crows (that was actually pretty funny). And yet another stinkin orange cat used to get in our trash can and scatter the trash all over our driveway, with the owner totally unconcerned about the whole thing. And on yet another occasion, we found this Siamese cat paddling around in our pool, unable to get out.

FTR, I own two cats, so I am not unsympathetic to cat owners. My cats are inside with my dog. I may be an iron-fisted tyrant, but at least nobody can accuse me of being irresponsible. They wont end up like these idiots on the news whose cats are getting killed by dogs (and then they want to ban the breed that did the killing).

This dog of her's, is used for her bad back. She already has a name for herslf writing books on the breed & shows them. That's why she can get away with this. I'll see how far she'll take it. Good luck to her.
