Suppose it's up to the individual whether they pay 500, 1000 or 2000 dollars for a pup.. I know pup prices already been discussed on this board, but I wonder just what them Limey pups, or their parents, or grand parents have done in a sporting context to justify a $1300 price tag?

Gotta be pretty speciel at that price LOL.

Always a thread on the price of pups on every board. I'm cheap so I have never paid a ton for a bulldog.

I use to gripe about the prices but in time (as I aged) I let it go. It is not my dog being sold, and I am not the buyer so it falls into the 'to each his own' category.

If I were to pay some of the prices I am seeing it would have to be from the source who actually did the dogs and bred the dogs. I could not give that for the guy that bought the dogs from the source and in turn bred the dogs based on another's accomplishments. Huge disconnect for me right there.

Even then there is no correlation between good dogs and pricing, unless of course your dog can count and will only scratch when he sees his number.

The first rule of markets is that the worth of a good or service is whatever somebody will pay.

Can’t understand the guys who complain about price. To much or can’t afford it move along. The main problem I’m seeing is people wanting to pay 80s and 90s prices. Show me something from the 80s or 90s you can still get at that price a few days from 2020.

Yea but these are/were/should be working dogs. If you’re buying dogs for work, you should understand they may not make it. I hate to use this analogy, but a working dog is a tool first, then a pet. When buying tools one buys what will get the job done most effectively. When you go to Lowe’s or Home Depot, you don’t the most expensive tool do you? No. You buy the tool that will get it done without breaking. When you buy expensive tools, usually you are paying for a name. Same with the dogs imo. When ppl started charging show winner bred pup prices for pups with a pretty ped, they fucked up the market. That and drugs. Dealers have more to play with and have driven up prices in a somewhat underground market.

There is always someone who will justify spending big on a “well bred dog.” What if it doesn’t make your program? Are you willing to cull that expensive investment? I feel like excuses are made when ppl pay to much and get a cur in the end. “Well, I’mma breed him anyways. The blood is there.” Nah....

    ps,
There are still good dogs, well bred and working, being sold for 80s and 90s prices. The government doesn’t control the price of dogs, we do, the consumer

I'll never complain about what a man wants for his dogs. I'll either pay it or I won't, easy peasy. I know my own time is valuable, I also know absolutely nothing the dogs need or use day to day from feed to vaccines are anywhere near what they used to cost years ago. It costs money and a lot of ones time to breed dogs plain and simple. 700 - 1200 is working mans price in this day and age.

People want a purebred animal for next to nothing. Lol go in your local newspapers classified section and see what a mutt like a labradoodle will cost you yet folks will complain about prices on a bred true purebred animal. Expecting it to be the next Gr Ch from a pup. Don't work that way and the only guarantee you'll get from the majority of people you can buy a dog from is the guarantee of the dogs health. The rest of the what ifs are not the breeders concern.

Most will set their price and thats that. When someone complains about it when interested in a pup, they simply just get told to kick rocks.. Lol.

I agree AGK, for the most part. If one is just buying “purebred” animals, I can agree. When buying purebred working dogs that will see work and might not make it, I can’t see paying that. 700-1200 for dogs bred from true, good, working stock is an acceptable range. I’ve paid 700+- not including shipping without blinking. At 1k+- just for a pup, they need to come down from a successful working background imo. Still too rich for MY blood.

Inflation is real. Everything costs more than it used to. Most things are also watered down compared to yesteryear, when things were cheaper AND of better quality! In the past ppl seemed to have a better grasp on working prices. Popularity has driven up price and lowered quality. If I bred THE TRUTH and charged a band for pups ppl would look at me funny being unknown. On the other hand you have folks breeding for a bunch of repeats on a name charging an arm and a leg.

It’s the same with cars. Just because you spend more doesn’t mean you got the best car. I’ll agree with “I’ll buy it or I won’t.” Just because we don’t speak on something doesn’t mean we don’t have an opinion. We’ve all seen overpriced pups whether we agree with the price or practice

There’s merit in everything post above. Hate it or indifferent it is what it is. Anyone dealing with any working breed should understand not all will work out . It’s simply the reality of buying pups . I agree with AGK the cost to raise a litter and a mans time have to be factored into the equation. When other working breeds can get a fair price for their dogs Seems unreasonable to me that this breed should somehow be expected to be sold on the cheap. Just be diligent in where you get your dogs.

I hit the wrong button. I was wanting to say a man’s time does factor in. What should factor more into working dogs, is the dog’s work instead of the mans time. I guess they kinda go hand in hand tho....

well since I derailed the thread, I’ll get’r back goin

I don't complain about pricing but I do 'voice' my opinion by not paying out the ying yang.

There is a commercial yard not far from here and although I do not sport his dogs I admire his program. He has stretched envelope on price and tons have followed. And the price continues to increase and will increase as long as someone comes running up the drive way with not one, but two handfuls of money.

I agree with the above posts, it does cost money, and at times costs are a lot, and if I were in today's market I would have to pay today's prices.

I also agree the dogs are no different than anything else bought or sold, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay. The price is only validated and the time of the purchase.

It has been a debate since the the dogs were first being sold and will contue as long as they are being sold.

I simply choose to pass (back when I was in the dogs)

Lol I'm just playing devil's advocate.

I breed my own so it will never really matter to me what others charge for a pup. I haven't bought a pup in many years. Redrum was the last pup I bought and that was like 2005. Paid 500 bucks for him. Was the best 500 I ever spent. I've also spent almost 4 grand on a dog so I can see both sides of the coin.
In the end, if one wants what someone else has then they got no choice but to pay it or move on.

I do agree that price doesn't equate to better just like anything else in life however most people I've dealt with that put time into working, raising breeding there own dogs aren't just giving it away to just anyone for nothing or next to nothing. One of the best dogs I've ever owned was given to me as a gift. The closer you are to someone the better they'll treat you IME. Many people, even those that sell dogs, will give dogs to people for free if they feel they will keep the dogs best interest in mind especially if they know them or of them. I get offers all the time for free pups Lol. More times than not off phenomenal stock. If I really want something bad enough though, I'm going to pay what the man wants for it. Thankfully, I don't want for much. :))

I find myself doing it all the time on FB.

Lol personally, I wouldn't spend more than a grand on a pup. If I was into buying pups that is. I'd rather buy an adult. I never really wanted a pup of that best dog to look through a collar, I'd want one off that dogs sire.

It's all good that we derail a thread here and there. It usually gets back on track and since this is always a good discussion I just left the posts alone. Maybe later when I'm more awake I'll see if I can move these posts into its own topic. Pretty sure I can.

Either pay the price or don't. Simple as that. Better yet, call your local shelters and find out how much "adoption" prices are currently for mutts they pick up off the street. And then try complaining about prices of bulldogs. A lot goes into the cost of pups. I've also realized "most" people take better care of a dog they paid 1k for than that same dog sold for 500. A lot of variables. Either pay or it don't.
