Bull dogs on the farm

My pup tracked a wounded deer through some of the thickest shit u can imagine in the rain with no blood trail. I have a long slew that runs north to south on the farm next to me. I told my daughter to drop off the dogs then ride the ranger back to the barn. 10 minutes later

    Thank you,

so far my bulldogs have ran rabbits, fought off all the coyotes that run my horses ragged, flushed quail, run with my horses, tracked wounded deer, and pushed them out of the slew for me to shoot. We are working on water retrieval’s now. Duck season is right around the corner.

My dogs have went to work with me, shopped at rural king, went camping, and have been socialized about as much as they could be. I’ve seen a couple of my oldest dogs siblings that have been raised on a chain and there is no way they would tolerate another dog anywhere around it if you tried taking it to rural king. I know some are just going to be aggressive towards other animals no matter what but I do believe socializing them the way we have can make a difference

We have Quail up north in Pa as well. I about shit myself when I'm walking in the dark in the woods and I flush one out. They'll wait until your damn near on top of them before taking flight.

That’s funny you should say that. Every time I go into the woods before daylight a cuvey of quail or a turkey cutting loose scares the breath right out of me. I’ll even tell myself going in that it’ll probably happen and still it scares me!

We have had several hunting dogs around here die unexpectedly the last few weeks.

The guy up the road from me has some pretty good deer dogs, walker types. He said one of his better males was a little behind the pack two days before Thanksgiving and then the next morning he was slow out of the box. He assumed he had been running hard and left him home and hunted the rest. When he got home he was dead. Then two females slow out of the box and then dead within a couple of hours.

He has one at the NC State Veterinarian school for an autopsy to see if he can figure it out. Poison of some sort comes to mind but there was no sickness, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Simply fine, then lethargic, then dead. I am not sure how long it takes for results.

    Weird.

We raised quail when I was younger. We had two incubators and two brooder boxes. Every three weeks we had about another 50-75 added to the bunch.

They were easy to raise and sold fairly well. it was a nice little hustle.

But, nothing attracts rats like quail shit. I mean some monsters. Mongo field rats that just get pissed off by rat shot from a .22c caliber rifle. Just made them mad. Had to go hollow points.

We had a small out building about 30-40 feet from the quails pens. On the hot summer nights we would get a 12 pack of Bud in the bottle. A .22 caliber rifle and a spot light. I flip the light on and my buddy would tag three or four before they scattered for cover. Turn the light off, trade the light for the gun and it was my turn to pop three or four.

They were sick little shits as you could shoot one of their buddies and they would eat him too.

We could kill 20-30 a night, at least til the beer ran out.

If you have lived in the rural south and had to invent your own entertainment you will understand. LOL

Slim I learned to shoot was a old grain silo that had some rotten corn in it and we use to take a 22 and tear some dam rats up! It was actually a lot of fun lol

The daughter and I are going to try our luck tommorow. Hopefully one of us can fill the freezers. I don't expect too but we sure are going to put in the work and try.
