As for Ben's legacy, he did travel the world and played with the best. He was always looking for the next show where he could make money. He has shown and see more bulldogs than anyone on this planet. As for his circle, it was endless. Once you can get over the bullshit/games, it was on. He never let his age or old body stop him. No matter if you liked the man or not, he made shit happen and got people to come out from their yards to play. Seeing Ben get older was hard, his health was terrible but he could not stay away from the box (traveling or local).

 

Never met the Captain but his good friend and partner in some dogs Danny '' Tattoo '' Powell known from dogs such as Giroux 'Ch.Rocky (RIP) often visited me over the years.
He was schooled by Andre Giroux.
Many of the Captain's views on the dogs were similar to Danny's.
"In the end it's all about money," was one of those opinions.
Or a dog urinating in its own sleeping place was not worth keeping.
Fine it's not a bed-wetting dog, but one of the gamest around here was one, and so our discussions went back and forth, if you know, dog men chat more like old women.
Miss that old biker because he was real and not a fake.

I thought I would weigh in on this. I hunted twice into C. Ben both times he came in one pound heavy on purpose not to professional of him. Took his forfeit both times and doubled the prize on his wishes, both times he did not get past the 20 min mark that was the quality of his Bulldogs he brought. I found him arrogant,loud,and full of Bulls--t. Told R. Becker how could you be around someone like this he just bowed his head. The only one in that room that might be alive that I can think of would be Bev from Canada. On D. Powell I
liked him went into a double bred Giroux Rocky dog he bred and sent down to the states told his handler to pickup at 48 min to save her he was a big man I am not told me to mind my own business I said I would buy the first pups out of her she proved to be dead game as most of Andre's dogs did at that time. The only people still alive from that moment in time is the ref me and my cousin we are all old men, still in the game.

Ah of course, thanks for the clarification.Had it been forgotten, it was all a long time ago, but it was exciting when we had to pull over.

 

Pinky and the brain, chatted a lot on the net in the beginning of the internet, we always argued with people like Calafornia Jack who could drink our blood, at least that's what it looked like, LOL. You also had ZOI from Canada, heard that Pinky had a heart attack and ZOI also had health problems, no idea if they are still alive, if so I hope they are richer than god and live a happy life.

 

Red Becker his blood had some impact here as they were succesfully.
Had a beautiful female half Beckers half my own blood, unfortunaly I'd no luck with her.

Also a real interessting dogman and overall nice guy was ''Mickey Mouse'' member of the Antonie Bellon Club, visited me often, we were born on the same day and had both the same age.
We celebrated our birthday in true rock & roll fashion and had a blast. He also had bad health, walked with a cane, we lost all contact over the years and wondering if he is still around, I really hope so.

 

Any recall of how the dr death show went? Great hearing these old stories

 

ANDRE GIROUX..GREAT DOGMAN!!!
Andre Giroux was a French Canadian who showed Americans that we did not have the monopoly on game bred American Bull Terriers. He is kown as, and definitly was, a top handler, conditioner, and match maker. I feel that his greatest talent was the ability to know which dogs to use for breeding and how to most effectively cross them. He was similar to one of his peers, Maurice Carver, in the respect of producing some of the best American Gamedogs of his time, although Andre lived in Montreal, Canada his entire life. Andre found good dogs where he could, was extremely selective on individuals, but he never became overly focused on one bloodline.

Andre culed or lost testing what most dogmen would have used for a foundation. He owned some of the best, then defeated the rest. While I was still a novice, Andre versed me on how in order to be successful in the dog game that I must learn to keep my heart in my wallet. He versed me on other ideologies regarding the dog game during our many conversations about the breeding, schooling, and training of American Gamedogs, and as to the importance of tending to a dog’s mental well being.

Those bits of advice still carry the same impact as I continue to learn as I go along. The reason that most of his lineage has not continued as most had expected is that many people were mating a pair solely because the name Giroux appeared on the pedigree. Giroux was clever enough not to limit his focus on an ego tunnel, but instead on a realistic objective promoting world wide success amid one of the most enigmatic of sports. Such is a practice that Andre almost never allowed himself to slip into, but one of his instincts did directly backfire on a large scale. The exception was when Andre stopped a brother to Brousseau’s Ch.Ben named Gunner Jr., which was sired by Ch.GunnerROM, and out of Giroux’ Bonnie in a roll while not fully matured but matched him anyway because of his punishing mouth.

Ch.Gunner Jr. won 4 and then was used for stud by many Canadian enthusiasts only to find that he was throwing mostly hard mouthed curs. Gunner Jr. was the dog Andre rolled against his recently purchased aging, retired stud from Patrick, GrCh.Hank. After 20 minutes with Jr., Hank was for sale again and was fortunately purchased by Captain America to be used with much success, just as the Californians were enjoying with the Hank blood through Ch.Little BootsROM and GrCh.Double Trouble. Captain America reached the pinnacle of his breeding program when a son of Hanks named Sir Douglas was put over his Alexis bitch, resulting with Captain America’s GrCh.King Arther that won his final outing as game as the game ones come by winning a war over PSK of NY’s Assassin at 41.5lbs.

Danny “Tattoo” Powell was a protege of Giroux and he seemed to be the only man beside of Alan Waldman, Louis Vinagro, James Crenshaw and Camp who knew how to successfully continue to propagate the Giroux lineage by keeping a mixture of the old Trahan’s Ch.Rascal and Carver’s Black Widow blood through Ch.Gunner over the Tudor stock through either Maloney’s Davis or GrCh.Hank. Danny Powell purchased one of the best sons of Giroux’ Trip, named Ch.Rocky that was a dog winning 2 mathces in one night, back to back, though the 2nd was not counted as a legitimate win. The other Ace Tattoo aquiredfrom Giroux’ wife, Lise, was Ch. Our Gal Sunday, one of the hardest bitches of modern times as she won all of her matches while never passing the 21 minute mark.

Andre phoned me a few times over the years to fill me in on the progress of his dogs and to ask about mine. Once was when Andre unfolded a story about how the old Bear dog which he purchased from Joe Orday came up missing. Andre told me that he found out who had stolen his old stud, and took a drive to see if what he had heard was true. After looking in the man’s backyard he walked to the front door and politely knocked. As the man opened the door asking “Yeah, what do you want?” Andre answered with 3 spent .38 caliber cartridges. He then calmly walked into the backyard again to get his dog, and went back home. Serious charges were pending an investigation, but Andre justly walked away from that mess with out doing any time.

Although Andre lived in the city, in an apartment building with virtually no yard to speak of, he never had a dog stoeln from him gain. In fact when people moved into his apartment building, he would farm out a pup to them as he had with his other tenants so they could raise it for him. Imagine if that man owned acreage. We may still be reading and talking of his dogs today.

Myself had one female ( 1-1) out of Giroux'Gr Ch Booger ROM out of B&W's Carrie, Ch.Spice & Ch.Jolly Joker, Oz it were all solid bulldogs.

PLUS WHEN HE WAS SOLD THE AMOUNT, AND THE FACT THE PAPERS WERE AT ANDRES PLACE UNTIL HE WAS PAID OFF...

ASIDE FROM THAT GUNNER JR IN ANDRE'S EYES WAS A CUR, LOL I'M NOT SAYING HE WAS A CUR BUT I'LL EXPLAIN IN A SECOND.
HIS LITERATE BROTHER WAS A DEADGAME DOG, THEY USED TO SAY HE WON ALL-3 SHOWS WITH HIS FACE..... BEING CHEWED ON... UNTIL THE OTHER DOG WAS TO TIRED TO GO ON AND CH BEN WOULD THEN GET TO WORK. HE WAS OWNED BY ANDRE B. WHO THEN HAD A CH named buster WHO BEAT CH MARCEL .

Next, gunner Jr was a dog if you put him to roll he would go an hr no problem of the chain
But put him again the next time for 10 mins and bring a 2nd dog to see how he does he wouldn't go into it. Bring back the first dog, he would go all night lol but he just would not hit a second dog and Andre just went bonkers, couldn't handle it. Blamed it on the Bullyson blood lol any how, it's nice to hear people still thinking about him and his dogs.
I still have some of his blood and have few straws down but I've been so discouraged with how I saw this story go that I just kept a few for myself to play with once in a while.
The yrs have been hard on us older pharts so it's not easy to get around anymore so I enjoy what little I see and reminisce add best I can of the good old times.
