I was wondering the same thing. Even though this original post is from 2015, I’m in the same place this guy was. I want an APBT, and I’ve owned them in the past. My last dog died 2 years ago and I’m looking to get another one. The problem I’m having is that the only dogs I’m seeing online are either XL American Bullies (no thanks) or 40 lbs. game dogs. I understand that these dogs are animal aggressive, and aren’t dog park animals, but to what level of animal aggression am I dealing with in a game dog? Is it manageable or are they completely off their shit?

Well there are dogs that are totally bonkers when they just smell another dog, and there are dogs that been to the hunt and tolorate other dogs because they are not in the moment.

Hard to say really, but owning a game dog, you should always prepare for the worst.

From chihauha to kangal, they can all bring out the worst in a gamedog, and even though you have yours on a leash or whatever, it is your fault in the end, because you have the Pitbull and they have the "social" dog.

Such a broad question, man. Every dog is different and there are so many variables. I have an adult male who just reached two that is absolutely unpredictable and walking him is a chore. He’s 55lbs lean and if you closed your eyes you would swear it was a 150lb dog at the end of your leash. He’s powerful and doesn’t stop. He’s wide open 100% of the time. Walking him during the day is quite embarrassing to say the least especially when he’s locked in on something. He will attack moving leaves on the ground, that’s how high strung he is. Really anything that moves. There’s a neighbors home who has fake dog statues on their front lawn and it’s a show every time I walk past. Clawing nails into the ground and doing that beautiful all too familiar bulldog scream. So you can imagine the sight to see when there’s another dog present. I have another male whose 2 that is easier to walk as long as there’s no other dogs around. He won’t bother me too much. But he’s also the type that will not hesitate to snatch a puppy up. He’s mean spirited lol. I have 2 pups that are 4 months and 5 months old and both are hot as fish grease. They will act a complete fool at any animal they see. Now back to those adults I mentioned. I was able for a while to have them be around eachother with strict supervision. The occasional scrap would obviously occur but nothing too wild...until they turned right around a year old. I had a accident happen, I broke it up with the help of a friend and all was ok. After about 3 weeks they both were healed up. After that day I never allowed them around eachother again. I’ve had two yard accidents with both of them in the last year. The last accident was this past summer. I had one working the spring pole and my other male(first one I mentioned) broke through his kennel run and attacked my other dog. It was just me alone I had no one to help me break up a 55lb dog and a 48lb dog. It took me no less than 20 mins to split them up and that was thanks to a friend that was coming over at just the right time. We broke them up and had to tend to the carnage, it was bad. Really bad. Had my friend not showed up one or both dogs would be either gone or have a few body parts less. I say all that to say this: a bulldog will be a bulldog. Better safe than sorry and you will never win a battle in court when you own this breed. Whether you are in the right or not.

Rgr that. Thanks for the information. I understand that whole court thing and it drives me nuts. People who walk their dogs off the leash and that dog comes running up to my dog. I’ve been able to control my dogs in the past, but like I said, they weren’t game bred. My first pit, Felon, was leaving a dog park when some dog ran up to him. I snatched him up off the ground and I remember that dog came up with him. Needless to say, that was the last time we went to the dog park. Had to give him away when I joined the Navy. Damn shame.

Thank you for the reply. I love them damn dogs, and your account reminds me of similar walking issues. Crossing the street when other dogs come, and praying that some dog doesn’t pop up around a blind corner. Hopefully I can find a good dog that fits what I’m looking for. Currently living in Japan, but I’m retiring in Mexico in a few years. Pray I find a good one. Thanks again.

If you’re just going to own one I really don’t think there’s much to worry about and you already have prior experience. I love this breed and couldn’t see myself owning a different one. The same thing that annoys me about them is the same thing I love lol. Nothing like a driven dog that’s always at full throttle. Good luck in your search. There’s good dogs everywhere and Mexico is certainly no exception.

It would be a spectacular thread lmao. I honestly love walking one of mine during the day due to scenery and when it’s a little warmer out. Unfortunately it has become such a chore and publicly humiliating when you see the reactions of other people. Night walks are easier for me. Less in the public eye.

It is possible of two game bulldogs of opposite sex getting along some what but most dogs no. These dogs are not the type of dog you can just leave running around in the back yard. One day a old lady might walk by your house with her poodle and without any warning the bulldog clears a 6' fence and kills her poodle like nothing even happened. They do make great family pets but must always be under a watchful eye. They can jump any fence, dig under any fence and will attack and kill other dogs like its nothing to them. The owner of my weight pull club has a Redboy x Busenbark bitch that's a awesome little dog, but if she see's another dog her tail wags and she whines like she want's to play once the other dog get's into range she will attack like she is the Angel of death, pull her off and give her shit her tail just wags like she did no wrong. But on the same note she lives with a male American bulldog that she gets along fine with, he knows not to mess with her and there is a bitch whippet at weight pull she like's and plays with as well but anything else will get killed. Unless you have the time and the proper environment for a game pitbulldog be responsible and look into other breeds no one wants to make the news and it gives a great animal a bad wrap.

  10. Embarrassing man I know lol.

Thanks for the reply. I watched video on YouTube last night with Richard Stratton, and it made me feel more comfortable with the idea of owning a game dog. First of all, I’m looking for a smaller pit this time, and I love what I’ve been seeing in these game dogs. He also said something along the lines of, ”just because it’s game bred don’t mean it’s game.” I just love this breed and I know how they get down. My last one grabbed the neighbor’s dog through the fence, but a the same time he could play with a white poodle down the street with supervision. Like you said, gotta keep your eye on them.

If you're looking for a smaller "pit," you might check this guy's stuff out: https://www.gamestaffstaffords.ca/gamestaff-dogs/

I know it's not an APBT, but he's producing sporting SBTs. It might be more your speed if you're looking for something a little easier to handle.

I wish that I could get these damn dogs out my system. Time, money, freedom lost to
Bro the best thing you can do is go see the people that have the dogs you are interested in. See what it's like to be around them firsthand. I will tell you straight up these dogs are a pain in the ass. You're life will revolve around them. They ain't worth it I'm addicted truthfully tried to give them up. Lost time, money and freedom I can't get back. Wish I never got into these dogs. Bud get you a different breed and live your life.

As depressing as this sounds it’s is all facts. I’m new to these dogs and I agree whole heartedly. It’s not a breed that you can live a normal life with. You can’t just go to sleep and forget about them and wake up the next morning normal. I’ve had so many sleepless nights due to me overly worrying about them getting loose(has happened plenty of fuckin times). I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night to separate them. All your friends/family will completely look at you different for having these dogs. If you think it gets tiring reading online about how “it’s all in how you raise them. Pibbles are Nany dogs it’s the evil people that starve them and make them fight etc etc” try hearing that in person almost all the time. You aren’t going to be able to walk your dog in peace without getting the ugliest looks/comments right down to the fact that you have a “huge collar on that poor dog”(a regular 2” nylon collar from bulldog supply lol). I’ve had animal control over my house more times than I can count. It’s bad, man. Everything looks bad even when it isn’t. If you don’t have the money to spend on having a setup like garners or alberts I would almost not even bother with this breed UNLESS you just want to get one. I get nervous just leaving the house to go do regular shit like hangout with people or goto the bar or whatever. I’m always thinking in the back of my mind that something is going wrong at home.

    But as
But as Ben said I’m full blown into addiction with this breed. I’ve tried to give them up but I can’t. I just get more, actually.

Game staff kennels is local to me and there is nothing special about his dogs, nothing wrong with them though either. Just because the Kennels name is Game doesn't mean the dogs are. I have seen much better staffs imported from Cambridge Staffords out of Texas. Cambridge has the best staffs I have ever laid eyes on hands down. If Game staffs dog's where so great people around here would buy them local instead of importing staffs from Cambridge Stafford's from Texas.

I didn't figure he was actually working his dogs. Just the first staffy kennel that came to mind that breeds to the correct confirmation and not just short and wide with a big head.

Those are some fine looking little dogs.

I have been around a couple of Game Staffs dogs. Nothing special, Nothing wrong with them either. There not spectacular at anything, there not bad at anything. My brother's buddy has a male and its no different than your average longer legged staff. I guess what I am trying to say is he want's big money for dogs that aren't any more of a dog than one could get at the pound. Cambridge dogs on the other hand are the best of the best, Very smart, Perfect build, Unbelievable work drive. There is a 26lb Cambridge Staff bitch in my weight pull club and she is a ball of fire like owning a Tazmanian devil but she is not fight crazy.

I’m just trying to get one. I’m not trying to start a yard or breeding. I’m just looking for a real APBT, because I’ve owned an ADBA registered pit before and he was amazing. I’ll have the time to be with my dog too because I’m about to retire.
