Leash and muzzle in all public areas ,its as simple as that, otherwise expect the worse to happen, and a knock on the door.

Best females dog I ever owned came to me via the dog park. We bought litter mates and I had a male and he got a female. At 6-7 months old they were in the dog park and some other dogs were off lead. As he walked by a poodle/foo-foo type dog charged his dog to do the 'play fight thing' while she was on lead.

About $3500 dollars later and a thrashing by the cop and the vet for owning/harboring a vicious pit bull he called me to come get her.

And most would say they would not pay the money and fight that fight/win that battle. And part of me thought that way too. But the reality is the $3500 and someone not coming to your house is the smaller of the two prices to pay. He had dogs and birds. In an attempt to win the war he had to for go the battle and say, "Yes sir. I was wrong for having a pit bull in the first place". LOL

SLIM i always take ownership for my actions because with great POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY. I heard that in a Spiderman movie and it stuck in my mind. Even though like u said it burns inside.

Maybe just me mate, but I'm never putting a muzzle on a bulldog, unless for breeding, I just see it as surrender.. After the dangerous dogs act introduced in 1991 & all Pitbulls in UK supposed to get neutered and wear muzzles, I thought 'what's the point in having them'? It makes dog look psycho, draws attention and I hated idea of imprisoning such great dogs in a muzzle anyway, it's what government trying to do to us today with them masks.. Same reason I never go to zoo because I don't like looking at Lions wolves and bears caged for life like prisoners when they should be roaming free.. Agree bulldogs should be on leads in city, but again (depending on dog) it's sometimes difficult if you're working one in urban environments.. I always carried a breaking stick in case of accidents, but never put a muzzle on a bulldog and never will.. I'd rather not have them.. Just my opinion.

One breaking stick. Those emergency horns on chain around the neck one good blast and approaching dogs turn and tail between the legs run. And if all goes good your little whiskey flask for doing good.

My mate was walking a real good bitch in a park very near his house ,a woman came by with a Yorkshire terrier off lead , the bitch was screaming to get the Yorkie so he picked her up and shouted at the woman to get her dog , she ran up grabbed her dog and said im sorry your dog is terrified

Ownership of high performance, driven breeds without the expectation of getting bit, or breaking up accidental scraps is wishful thinking. 99% of the time, mishaps are human error..and dog living in the moment, just being a dog.

Thats a fair comment, but after one of my dogs killed a sheepdog,i learned the hard way,it even forced me to move house, and cost me a lot of money,my dog was on a leash by the way ,and there were two sheepdogs there that were not. That put a lot of needless attention on other dogmen in my area as well, and of course drew more needless attention to the breed.

Way I see it mate, if your dog was on lead, then law was on your side and nothing anyone could do about it, having said that, I know different areas have different pressures.. I once walked dog along old abandoned railway, mine was on lead, then I saw a woman under a bridge slip her spaniel off lead and set it on my dog, spaniel went straight for mine and got pounded, woman screaming "that's a fighting dog and I'm getting you charged".. I said I know your a copper, trying to fit me up'.. I get my dog off the spaniel and it's off.. I told her, my dog was on lead, restricted, under control, and the only reason your's was off lead is because you deliberately tried to create a dog attack charge, so fuck off!

My old pal (frank rip) had problems with farmers where he walked his dogs, they told him if your dog comes on our land again then we're entitled to shoot it, Frank said well I'll be back on your land with my dog tomorrow, so feel free to bring your gun, but shoot my dog and you'll never sleep safe in your bed again. always said if I need new dogs, then they need new houses.

I hear what you're saying mate, but if I was only walking my dogs, not bothering anyone and got attacked by an (off lead) Collie same way you did.. And if as a result of that incident, local dogmen complained that you were bringing them heat? I'd be asking myself what the fck they were doing around game dogs in first place?

The thing is i was on the wrong side of the law in the first place,as by the then the dda was being, enforced via house raids etc,on a daily basis, there was actually a specialist police unit in my area,i know people who had their pet am bulldogs, sbts impounded just on the suspicion of being apbts. The dog in question was not owned by any farmer,it was being exercised by its owner who happened to be a 10 yr old kid.probably still gives the poor fucker nightmares to this day.imagine at that age watching your beloved pet getting killed that way.I snapped a stick trying to break him off,all because at the time i was dumb enough to think i didnt need to muzzle, and people would think he was some psycho dog,if he had one on.One thing is for sure if id have muzzled him it definitely would not have happened. Also i am pretty sure i know who the law would have sided with.especially with my naughty record lol.

I heard about that unit.. We live in mirage of a democracy that's crumbling before our eyes.. All the best mate.

The same here. Once it has been established you own pitbulls, you are in the wrong. Facts do not really matter and are seldom considered.

When I had Fila Brasileiros I was walking a male on my property. My in-laws lived next door and had a friend over. We had asked him several times, first don't bring your dog when you visit, two if you do, keep it on a leash and if you do let him go, leave him in the front yard which is fenced in. Three normal requests. Should be no issues?

As soon as he saw me walking my dog on a lead he opened the gate and let his dog out. The dog made a bee line sprint right into the mouth of a 150lb Fila. The 30lb mutt got wrecked in short order.

It cost me $800 or so dollars at the vet. By accepting responsibility for his ignorance I pretty much kissed the boot that had just kicked me in the nuts.

On paper, and maybe in court, I am in the right. Black letter law as they say on TV.

In reality when Animal Control arrived and saw 15-20 dogs chained out, most showing marks for having to pay rent on their spots, carpet mills in the sheds and a cabinet full of medicine the ending would not have been pretty.

$800 and kissing a boot was not all that much in comparison but it sure hurt to take that one for the team.

From my personal experiences and from what I have seen with others it is best to eliminate any contact with your pit bull and the outside world.

Mostly because, personally, I don't think the pit bull owner an win....maybe a battle here and there, but society has set these dogs up to fail in the war.

I hate being that pessimistic about any issue but it is what it is.

I think the only chance of me keeping bulldogs would be if i lived on a farm somewhere pretty remote, away from nosy neighbours etc.I just cant see any other way of doing it in the uk.Where i live now there are dog walkers everywhere, things have changed so much,i dont even know half the breeds people keep, toy type breeds, french bulldogs etc.when i was a kid everybody who had dogs mainly had working breeds, terriers.lurchers, bulls etc.If you exercise your dogs you barely saw anyone, things have changed so much and not for the better.

Bottom line is.....just don't do it. It's setting your dog up to fail. Even if you are responsible, there are too many people that are not.
