I know a dogs ability to bite hard is more than likely to do with jaw dimensions but you've all heard the saying "A dog bites hard because it wants to."

I think this a bit of an old wives tale, surely a hard biting smaller dog won't be able to bite as hard as a larger soft mouthed dog, what do you reckon the results would be if tested?

I would say that they are some thirty pounders that will bite harder than a fifty pounder

depends on the dog i guess.

    Physically surely it's not possible?

it is possible and happens often. I would say "in general" maybe when your talking about a dog that is nearly 2x the others size, their bite would be harder but that is far from set in stone.

I guess maximum force potential and maximum force applied are two different things entirely.

A hard bite is not a function of weight within the breed. And while for the most part I also wouldn't consider weight and hard bite to be mutually exclusive it does follow for the most part that as the dog gets heavier most dogs will have a harder bite than lighter dogs. The variable of anatomy and its extension to physics always determines how hard a dog bites within its weight class and allows for dogs to bite harder than some in higher weights.

I don't believe size has anything to do with bite rather family of dogs as well as individuals is the way I see it. Ear suckers may seem to not be doing damage but probably given the opponent an enormous head ache. In other words where's the damage being done ?Across nose doesn't need hard bite.... sensitive spot I believe..head ear=frustrater IMO.

For dogs against other animals I believe some dogs are genetically predisposed to a hard bite regardless of weight... all other variables considered. But coming from a
"working dog" background I have taken many arm and leg bites. A German bred 110 pound Rottie bites with crushing power that no Pit can duplicate.
Pits bite and "hang on" that's TENACITY, not bone crushing torque. For a man biter, tooth size, neck strength, jaw agglutination , weight, Fight drive, ect ect
all comes into play. Pits bite hard, and then shake and play. A good Rottie or GSd will crush the bite and take a man to the ground. and then bite harder.
as stated, there are a lot of variables to a canines bite force. One of the HARDEST leg bites I ever felt was from a 65 lb Import Dutch shepherd. It was
the size of the fight within the dog coupled with muscular hind quarters and extra long teeth. .2cents

depend on the bone size .

It is said/proven in general, dogs with the wider heads and jaws are usually the ones that turn out to have the hardest bites. Besides that, there are obviously situational influencers which make a dog bite harder or not. My guess, a mix of attitude, situation and mostly genes.

And the weight behind the animal.

Ppl bite harder than dogs on average... A leg bite? That's one of the most sensitive spots to get bit. Leg= stifle= ouch... How many rotties or GSD KILL anything from a hold?? I'll wait..........

What about the pit kills in MINUTES? Did they only get lucky? What about Shady Lady? QOH? I saw Boogie Boy kill one in 4 minutes I think it was... Bite has to do with confidence IMO. Not totally, but it helps tremendously. I've come to expect smaller dogs to bite harder. Again IMO
