"Pitts" don't come in merle. And it's "Pit" like in a dirt "pit".

And Carlinaboy, just because the parents aren't merle, doesn't mean that puppies cannot come out with that coloration. Genetics goes MUCH further than just the sire and dam. And it's a fact that the merle coloration came from outcrossing to other breeds. There was no such thing till all the money-making opportunities came out from selling "rare" colored "pits". Sorry.

HOWEVER, the crossing of LA Catahoula Leopard Dogs to APBTs and American Bulldogs is a long standing tradition for many hog hunters in the southeast region. The cross has proven to be very effective in creating a tought do it all catch dog. (But then some people started calling the dogs "pit bulls" and them selling them as such since registries like the CKC give you the opportunity to register them as such)

I am just wondering. How often do dogs from your breeder actually come out merle?

Thats what i was trying to say. But do i think my Merle is a pure APBT... NO. I dont think that at all but it makes me pissed when ADBA can register Blue 100-150 pound Blues but they cant register a damn merle even though my merle is registered under ADBA. I can guarentee my little female wont be over 40 pounds. I guess you can call her a mutt or whatever you want to call her. And yes i will be getting her fixed but not until i give the breeder a little call here in a little bit to tell him to stop selling shit.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

Yes and no ..It is those that question things that discover the truth and things like this debate need to have the truth in order to quell the bs that comes with it.. Just like how the media puts out rumors about the APBT... I guess thats just me..I question everything...

i read part of the page your talkin about.(i think it was a link on here), but i didn't see anything saying G L Barney was blue. and haven't heard of any of barney decendants being blue.. fifty gave the link to cold steel pits, they run barney and ofrn blood, my dog has that blood. the breeder i got her from has never had anything but red.

  9. In talking to breeders and doing additional research, it is apparent that this color pattern is not "new’ to the breed. What is new to the breed is using the correct term merle to describe this color pattern. In 2001 at the urging of our fanciers, a list of ‘ACCEPTED TERMS TO DESCRIBE COLORS’ was adopted in an effort to enhance common understanding among fanciers of the breed. Up to this time these dogs with the merle color pattern were described as spotted, mottled, incorrectly as brindle , and in some incidences not addressed in the color description of the dog at all. In formulating the ‘ACCEPTED TERMS TO DESCRIBE COLORS’ within our breed, the ADBA sought out breeders and did a literature search of accepted canine references to come up with the terms that would be accepted to most accurately describe colors and color patterns. It was felt at that time, that the most accurate description of this color pattern is the term ‘merle’. In certain bloodlines we have verified merle dogs back four and five generations in the pedigree.

Yeah, and if you keep on reading they also say that the trait is a genetic defect and any dogs that exhibit this trait should not be bred. They should be removed from the gene pool. Merles were extremely rare at one point. They were extremely rare because it is a genetic defect. Now you see them fairly often. This is because dogs that always exhibit the trait have been bred into the APBT.
People, think about it. It is a defect. The trait was almost never seen or passed on. It was so rare that the old dogmen didn't have a proper name for the trait. Not anymore though. If you have a merle, chances are that the dog has been crossed with another breed. The trait is genetic flaw. Therefore, it is extremely rare. It's like people being born with lobster claws for hands. It is a genetic defect and it almost never happens. If your dog is a merle, do not breed it. Love it the same. But, know that it is either a mutt (more than likely) or it has a genetic defect and will probably have health issues.

Well like I said the dog belongs to a friend but I do know the breeders of her and from what I understand she is the only 1 that they have ever bred or at least the only 1 they will admit to. Don't believe that they ever tried that breeding again.

OK...let's get back to real apbt's of old that were blue. Does GRAY BRINDLE count? I found an old school Colby dog from 1934 in L. Colby's latest book. The dog's name was Colby's Paddy bred by J.P.Colby. L. Colby discribes his color as grey brindle. Now back in the 30's I'm pretty sure the word "blue" wasn't widely used with dog men. Correct me if I'm wrong. What do you guys think?
