rescues DO temperment test dogs ( reputable ones anyway)
YOU need to let the dog adjust, you cant just waltz the dog in and act like its been there forever.
and yes, a few years ago people here DID refer people to rescue/shelters, and that was a different crowd than the posters you see nowadays, most of them no longer post here for one reason or another
are there dogs in rescue with, or potentially with ~issues~? yes
are there people out there breeding and selling dogs with, or potentially with ~issues~? yes.
if you are going to take a non "puppy" into your home, beit from a rescue or a breeder, you need to know how to put the dog thru the transition

Agreed. There can be dogs with issues from either rescues OR breeders.

In this particular case, this dog sounds like it needs a leader and the dog needs to be taught boundaries. JMO.

Just for the record, I have no problems with anyone expressing if a dog needs to be put down. I just feel that in THIS case, it seems to me that this dog is testing.

you and your GF need to establish alpha roles of the pack, if he gets out of line make a noise (clap your hands) and say no, if that doesnt work clap, hold his snout and then say no.

it might sound dumb but act as a wolf in the alpha role would.

While people dump their dogs because of moving, alot of people also dump their dogs because:

    new baby on the way
    allergies
don't have the time to train the dog
    can't train the dog
    girlfriend doesn't like the dog
    boyfriend doesn't like the dog
Dog is no longer a cute little puppy
Irresponsible breeders that sell their dogs to anyone that gives the cash (dogs end up in shelters because owners have no damn clue)
    Costs too much money

I have the utmost respect for responsible breeders, but don't blame rescues for cleaning up the irresponsible breeders mess to begin with.

unless its a game pitbull it belongs in the house. pitbull want and NEED people interaction on a consistant basis.

you didnt do anything wrong by letting the dog sleep with you, what you did wrong is not set the role of dominance. establish to the dog that he must be INVITED to join you, if he disobeys this by doing whatever whenever then you need to repremand him.

This topic is just to much! The one thing that most of you do not get is this. We all have our own ways to deal with this problematic dog, but unless we ( somebody) goes to this persons house to teach them, then you have to relie on this person who doesn't know how to handle the particular situation. There are certain training methods that have to done by experienced professionals, especially an aggressive dog. Being inexperienced may very well get you bit or someone else. This doesn't seem like the something that the owners should be trying out right now with a unknown history of the dog. For safety reasons, they should return the dog and start with a pup. No time lost, not much headache, and everyone walks away intact and unscaved. JMO

    I agree with FrankDuplin.

Those tests are not accurate as far as "temperment testing" goes. They are pure bs to be quite blunt based on my own experience of hearing about people who had to put there dog down or give it away because it attacked them or someone else. I ask where they got it from, they respond "from a rescue, or shelter"

Hell, do a search using the keywords "rescue" or "shelter" in the memorial section. Although, you will find better results on a forum where the majority are petbull owners. Since this is a game-dog fancier type forum, most pitbull mutt mommies arent on this board, only some.

And you will see all the pages of threads of the manbiters that come from rescues/shelters. I see it all the time, people complaining that there dog bit someone and I others ask the history on the dog and they said it adapted it from a rescue a year ago. All that nonsense. Its funny, 98% of threads I see regarding manbiters on the forums are from shelters/rescues.
Dont believe get brain washed by those fur mommies about the rescues being strictly temperment tested.

i remember someone posting about there dog that they got from this "reputable rescue"

OUT OF THE PITS - A Non-Profit Animal Rescue Organization
They had company over and the dog bit there brother(who doesnt live with the dog)

some "strict temperament testing" at best.

Return the unknown dog that SNAPPED AT YOUR GF and get a pup from a legit breeder.
You have little attachment with the dog, so why bother with all the nonsense from an unknown shelter dog to try to "correct" the problem.

Personally, I just dont trust a shelter or rescue dog.

What about a puppy from a rescue or a shelter?

For all you know that puppy from a shelter/rescue could come from 2 unsound parents. That will most likely carry that trait to the offspring. You dont know the pups true temperment till it is 2-3 years old IMO. Thus, you are taking a BIG chance.
There are chances with all pups. But the chances are higher with rescues/shelters pups/dogs.

How do you know the puppys sire was not an extreme unsound dog? And the dam aswell?? etc. Do you know the pups parents that you are getting from the shelter/rescue?

Just my opinion. If you want to take the risk that the puppy turns out unsound. Be my guess. Although of course its a risk with all puppies even from reputable breeders, but the chances are very low from reputable breeders when comparing dogs that come from shelters...

they are in the shelter for a reason... most of em, if not all of them are from back yard breeders...... Considering most reputable breeders will take the dog back if there was an issue.

Ok. Here it is! from your post it seems to me you don't have experience. Glad you asked however the question should have been asked before you go out and got yourself a dog with questionable background.

My advice to you would be do research on a particular breed you want, and ask yourself. Do you have the time, space, and patience to acquire that particular breed?

Example!!!!! when you are looking to buy a new a car, do you go out and buy it (pay in full). then you take it to the mechanic to go over it. You get on it, to find out it doesnt reposnd as good as you thought it did, Then he tells you that the engine is blown and you need a new drive train, that it's a four banger as opposed to V8!!!! NO!!!! do your reseach and you have to have some kind of an idea of

    Good luck on your quest!!!

I'm not understanding this. Where you get your dog from (bloodlines) does not determine whether the dog should be in the house or not.

i've owned quite a few breeds (timber wolf/GSD, argentino, tosa to name some) an i dont think the APBT is that hard to tame, my current pit sleeps in the bed with me sometimes but she understands perfectly well that i must invite her otherwise its punishment, she understand that unless i invite her to the couch its punishment, she understands that if she "play" bites its punishment, my bitch is 100% submissive to me and my GF because thats the way i like it and thats the way she was raised.

my game breed dogs however do not stay in the house, they have their own area and like it there, i live in florida so the weather is not bad however should it get below 65 they can come into the den an stay there.

im not using a bloodline to determine if they should stay inside or outside, i judge based on their behavior.
